Chapter 89 - A Memory Of Friends Part 1

While wondering about those whom he had left behind, Gordan had absent mindedly pulled out another one of the cinders and placed it in the ground for it to flavor the air around him since it had a bit of a calming effect and also because it was slowly helping with his built up fatigue which was pretty annoying to deal with. He had been quite surprised to learn that the cinders apparently had no limit since no matter how many he used they never showed any signs of being depleted, which made Gordan wonder if that had anything to do with the small sideways eight which was in the corner next to them on his screen. While sitting there in the quiet Gordan couldn't help but look forward to the next five years of his life after he delt with the pirate situation. He hadn't had a proper break in his life so it would be quite the experience for him to deal with, but before he could get to his break he would have to make sure that the whole situation was properly taken care of. To help with the process he took some wet sand and began to mold it into the shape of a small fly which would not be easily noticed, then he added a speck of his soul into it, just enough to get it moving. Using ones own soul was a dangerous bit of work, since if it was completely used up the person would become a monster known as a husk which lived by eating human souls and was a mindless creature having lost all sence of reason or emotion, all it could feel was hunger. While the piece of soul which was used was gone for good, there were ways of adding to ones overall soul amount, and since he knew of these methods Gordan did not have to worry about using his soul as much as people normally would.

With the fly fully operational, Gordan drew a small circle and placed the fly onto it, sending it off to check on the work of the souls who were currently on their revenge mission. He thought about the first time he had met the small child who was now on a violent rampage with the intent of murdering all who were involved in the ships demise. How fast people grew up, even if it had been practically a lifetime ago.

Having just returned from a rather annoying mission in the mountains which bridged the gap between the frozen plains and the rest of the country's, he had to pass through a kingdom which was holding a grand festival which caused the roads to become almost impassable. So to save time Gordan decided to let his men rest in an inn until the festival was over. After sleeping for three days straight Gordan was convinced by the rest of his group to spend the day out on the town to explore and enjoy the festival which they had been enjoying for the last three days, being rather hungry and still a bit tired from the whole campaign in the mountains where they had been tirelessly searching for a rare plant which was said to have great magic boosting abilities, the king required it to boost his own abilities. The problem was that the mountains were full of extremely dangerous monsters and in defence of his men, gordan had taken the safest route which took much longer and required much more stealth.

While he was walking though the streets Gordan came upon a strange ally way which twisted around into a small garden which was blocked by a strange magic seal which he had never seen before. At the center of the garden Gordan saw a small child who was drawing symbols in the dirt while looking extremely frustrated. The child didn't notice him so he ventured closer and saw that the child was working on a magic equation for an expansion of ones manna pool. The equation had one flaw in it which was causing the child a considerable amount of frustration and Gordan leaned over and changed one of the symbols with a small stick which was laying in the ground next to the focused child who still hadn't noticed him yet, and it wasn't until the child came upon the change in formula that she finally looked up to see Gordan looking at the formula closely to understand what roots the childs theory had stemmed from.

"Who are you? How did you make it past the cloaking spell? I made sure that it was triple enforced."

Gordan turned his attention over to the child and looked at her with a completley blank expression which was devoid of emotion.

"Did you use a combination of the Natural magic theory, and the magic comparability law to come up with this? I feel like there is also a third component but I personally haven't studied that one before."

He pointed to a section of the scribbles which linked the two ideas together. The child's eyes opened wide and her mouth dropped open in shock toward his strange manner of speaking, he had a rather thick accent which marked him as a person who had not been in the country very long, but his words were carefully spoken so that she could understand them without a problem.

"It's a relatively unknown theory which was made by a person who was considered a heretic and most of his papers were burnt along with him, so I'm not surprised that you haven't heard of it. I only know it by chance in the first place."

She was still shocked but when it came to informational discussion she never had anyone to talk to, but the person in front of her was the one initiating the conversation so she could actually speak without restraint. After that the two of them spoke for hours about different ideas which were interesting to the both of them. When the sun began to sink below the roof tops Gordan stopped speaking and stood up from the place where he had been sitting next to the child.

"I have to return to the rest of my group, they might freak out if I am gone to long, especially Sig, he has major problems with me disappearing overnight without an explanation. It was an interesting time talking with you miss, I hope that we can see each other again."

He turned around and was about to leave when the child grabbed his sleeve and put something into the palm of his hand.

"I will be here in the afternoon tomorrow, please come then, I have something I want to talk to you about. No one would believe me but I can bring my notes then so you can see what I am talking about. This stone will let you enter my barrier without any trouble so make sure you don't lose it."

Gordan nodded his head and waved goodbye to the child before going back to the inn where he found the rest of his group just about to go out looking for him. It took him awhile to calm them down, and after a meal he went back to sleep. The next day he arrived at the area with the small stone still in his hand he tossed it through the barrier in front of him and a small hole ripped which let him pass through, and even though he could do the same himself he decided to inspect the mechanism which the barrier ran on. Once he was finished he picked up the stone and entered the small garden where he found the child huddled over a stack of papers and maps. He sat down next to her and gently tapped her shoulder to wake her from her sleep. When her eyes came into focus she smiled and instantly began to show him the maps which seemed to be a layout of a small kingdom which was located on the boarder of the one that they were in. Gordan saw from the reports that there were signs of an abnormality in the natural state of the whole area and the two of them discussed the problem, as well as other ideas for another couple of hours when the child suddenly looked up at the sky and frowned.

"Great, I forgot I have to go to that blasted ceremony. I wanted to keep talking to you about this though. It's fun to talk to you about this type of thing, because unlike other people you actually listen to my ideas before judging them, while everyone else just brushes me off becouse of my age. But one day when I'm older I will show them and then they will all realise how wrong they were."

Gordan silently listened until she had finished her rant before saying his piece.

"Well that's just how some people are, they don't bother listening until it is too late. Now you had better get to that ceremony before someone starts to look for you."

The child nodded and quickly rushed off in the opposite direction of where Gordan had come from. So after straightening out her notes and maps Gordan stood and began walking back to the festival noise once more.
