Leaving Qingyun District Hospital, Li Xinwen and Xue Jun split into two teams. Li Xinwen made his way through the streets, following the path that was ingrained in his mind based on the map from before. He moved swiftly, his footsteps light, inaudible to people and unless they are trained cultivator who can sense his presence, no one would be able to notice him.
The city, once bustling with life now felt like a ghost town with dangers lurking around every corner. Occasionally, he saw a group of people working together to kill zombies and others looting the surrounding shops. They moved quickly and with efficiency. They grabbed water bottles, canned foods and medicine. They avoided anything frivolous that would be useless for their survival. Li Xinwen nodded to himself, approving of their decision. 'Smart. Survival takes priority in this kind of situation.' Li Xinwen did not linger for long and continued forward. But few blocks down, he saw another group. Compared to the one he saw before, this group is taking a different approach. Rather than grabbing the necessities, they were busy looting luxury stores. They tore apart shelves stocked with expensive clothes, electronics and jewelry. He observed them for a while before he shook his head. 'Those fools…' Li Xinwen watched them with pity. 'They will come to regret their decision. Not to mention…' Li Xinwen's eyes went to a small horde of zombies that walked towards the luxury store, attracted by the loud sound that the looter made when they break the shelves and glass casing. The several hours of experiencing the apocalypse is enough for humans to adapt to their new survival lifestyle. For those who are unable to do so, they can only blame themselves for their own ruin.Soon, Li Xinwen reached the outskirt of the abandoned factory complex. Just as Xue Jun mentioned before, there were already a lot of military personnel that works on making barricades around the abandoned factory complex. There were also few scattered survivors working alongside them, probably those who were saved by them or found them by luck. From where he stood, Li Xinwen could clearly see their movement and before long, he already figured out where they stored their supplies. 'So, the 3rd Army really is planning to make this place their base,' Li Xinwen thought as he grabbed his chin in a moment of contemplation. The factory complex was a strategic location and it made sense for them to secure the area. With the looming threats of zombies, an isolated place in the outskirt such as this would provide ample defense and space for their operation.'But since they dared to steal from us, it's not wrong for me to return the favor,' Li Xinwen thought as he approached the newly made base. He didn't even bother to hide himself as he moved in a relaxed manner. It did not take long before the soldier from the 3rd Army took notice of him and raised their guns at him."Halt! Before you come any closer, answer these few questions! If you don't cooperate, we will dispose of you!" one of the soldier cried out to Li Xinwen. "First, were you bitten or scratched by the zombies?"Li Xinwen raised both arms and replied: "No. I was able to avoid the zombies when I saw that there was a military truck. I followed its trail and was able to get here.""Tell us your name, age, occupation and whether you have any disease or not," the soldier demanded without lowering their guns.Li Xinwen thought for a while and decided to fake his identities. "Zhang Wei, 26 years old, I work as a chef," Li Xinwen answered calmly. "No diseases.""Alright, stay where you are and my comrade will approach you to do an inspection," the soldier then motioned to his comrade who cautiously stepped forward, still holding his rifle up. Li Xinwen remained perfectly still, his face relaxed, betraying no emotion. The soldier moved closer and checked him from top to bottom. Then, the soldier rudely lifted Li Xinwen's shirt up before frowning at what he sees. This frown did not escape Li Xinwen's sharp eyes and he wondered if his plan to infiltrate quietly would fail. But after a while, the soldier finally lets him go. "Wait here, I will have to go report to my superior," he said before he walked away. He stopped close to his comrade for a while to inform the other of his finding before he went into the base.'Did they realize something was off?' Li Xinwen wondered as he inspected himself. But no matter what he did, he couldn't figure out if there was anything wrong. His mind raced as he contemplate to abandon his plan on sneaking into the base and just destroy it. 'But if I do that, innocent people will also be caught in the crossfire,' he reasoned himself. While he was in deep thought, the soldier from before returned. But he wasn't alone. Accompanying him is a man who appears to be a high-ranking officer based on the insignia pinned on his chest. The officer's sharp gaze locked into Li Xinwen, scanning him from head to toe. "Mr Zhang," the officer called out. "What is your business here? Forgive my rudeness but your appearance doesn't look like a chef trying to survive the apocalypse," he said in a serious tone laced with hidden warning. "You are simply… too clean."It was only now did Li Xinwen finally figured out what was the reason for the other soldier's frown earlier. "If not a chef, what else can I be?" Li Xinwen asked back. Drawing on his acting skills, he maintained an innocent expression, put on a helpless smile and subtly masked the sharpness of his gaze. The officer's lips pressed into a thin line, eyes narrowing dangerously. "A chef who managed to not only follow the military convoy, but also do it undetected? In addition to that, without a single scratch or a speck of dirt? In this chaotic time?" he questioned. "Either you are exceptionally lucky or… exceptionally skilled…"To this, Li Xinwen lets out a soft chuckle while he maintains his composed demeanour. "My grandfather once said that I am a child blessed by the heaven itself. I am very lucky that zombies seems to avoid me," Li Xinwen said before adding, "And I also know how to avoid trouble when I see it so…""Are you telling me you avoided places where there could be danger based on instinct?""That's right!"The officer was clearly not convinced. He motioned for the soldier beside him to step forward. "Search him again," he ordered. "Thoroughly this time."The soldier nodded his head and approached Li Xinwen once more. He was cautious, his movements were deliberately slowed and edged with suspicion. He pats Li Xinwen thoroughly, not missing a single detail that could be anything of threat, be it a concealed items or weapons. As the soldier searched him, Li Xinwen could only maintain a calm expression though, when the soldier lingered a moment too long on his waist, he had to force down the urge to cut off those hands. Finally, the thorough inspection ends and the soldier reported back to the officer. "There is nothing of suspicion, sir.""Nothing?""Nothing, sir," the soldier confirmed once again. The officer moved his hand, letting it rest on his holstered gun strapped to his waist. And of course, Li Xinwen saw this move. "Mr Zhang," he said in a cold voice. "Your story just doesn't sit right. I have been in the army for a long time and I've been assigned to the front lines a few times… My instinct says that you are suspicious," the officer's hand gripped the gun and pulled it out of its holster, aiming it towards Li Xinwen. "Your appearance here… the timing is just convenient. Too convenient."Li Xinwen's expression did not falter even with a gun aimed towards his head. Not only that, he also noted the subtle signal the officer gave to his men. Even if he did not use his spiritual sense, he knew that several soldiers had already shifts their grips on their weapons. With how the situations has unfolded, Li Xinwen also decided to drop his innocent act. "Convenient, huh? Well, it doesn't matter," Li Xinwen stated in an icy tone. "Since it has come to this, please don't blame me for handling things my way since it looks like… there are going to be more casualties now…"The officer seemed to have sensed danger and attempted to pull the trigger in order to end the threat in front of him. But in a blink of an eye, Li Xinwen was already gone. Then what followed next was the sudden weightlessness of his arm. His gaze moved from where Li Xinwen once stood, to his arm only to see it was gone, cleanly severed just below the elbow. Not long after, he heard a dull thud as if something fell on the ground. He looked at the source of the sound only to see a severed limbs lay motionless just a short distance away, the gun still clenched in the lifeless fingers. The delayed pain receptors finally caught up with the reality and his eyes widened as searing pain spread from the stump where the rest of his arm should've been. The officer's scream of pain pierced through the air, his other hand reflexively applied pressure to slow down the bleeding. His men was stunned by the sudden situation but they quickly snapped back to attention. They raised their weapons and scanned for Li Xinwen's figure but no matter how much they try, they simply could not catch even a hint of Li Xinwen's shadows. One of the soldier heard a soft whisper of a wind beside him before he felt something warm and sticky splashed onto his side. Whipping his head, he was just in time to see his 'comrade', or what is left of the former man. The body had been cleaved diagonally, the cut went from the shoulder down to the waist in one, clean cut. Then, his vision blurred and spun chaotically. He saw the world turned upside down, making him confused. It wasn't until he saw a decapitated body still standing did he realize the horrifying truth — his head had been severed from his body. That was the last thing he saw before everything went black.Li Xinwen reappeared between the two corpses with a sword in his hand. The blade of the sword gave out a cold gleam under the sun, clean and untouched by the blood. The officer who witnessed the death of his two men, felt as if cold water had been poured over his body. In his fear, he turned and ran away from Li Xinwen while screaming towards the base for reinforcement.More soldiers came out of the base, all fully armed. It seems that they were alerted by the officer's scream because they all have the expression that says they are ready for battle. "No matter what you do, kill him!" the officer lay down his order as he ran straight into the base.Li Xinwen witnessed the cowardly act and couldn't help the helpless sigh leaving his lips. "You poor little lamb," Li Xinwen said as he glanced at the soldiers in front of him. The soldier stood in a defensive formation, all guns aimed at a single person. "I will give you a chance. Those who lay down their weapon now won't have to go see Yan Wang so early. But if you continue to fight—"BANG!Before Li Xinwen could even finish talking, a resounding gun shot was heard from afar and he quickly side-stepped to avoid the incoming bullet. His eyes narrowed, sharp eyes glaring at the sniper that is currently positioned on the watch tower at a distance. The sniper, taken aback that his surprise attack failed, took another shot at Li Xinwen. The bullet travelled at a very fast speed, unseen by the naked eyes but for Li Xinwen, it was still at a manageable speed. With a light flick of his wrist, he deflected the bullet aimed at him. The ricochet embedded the bullet to the ground nearby. Seeing that the second shot failed, the sniper wanted to attempt another shot. But before he could fully pull the trigger he saw Li Xinwen's figure disappear from his scope. His eyes widened, panic surged in his chest as he moved his crosshair trying to find his target in a frantic manner.A cold steel pressing against the side of his neck made the sniper froze in his action. His breath hitched and he began sweating, Without a word, he lowered his sniper rifle down in a defeated manner. He instinctively knew that it was Li Xinwen who is currently standing behind him though he doesn't know how his opponent managed to do so.Li Xinwen stared at the sniper in front of him. He could sense that the man in front of him has given up but the reason why he did not immediately kill him is because of that unknown energy that is leaking from the sniper. What surprised him was that it was far richer than the two that was in Xue Jun's team. 'If I can recruit him…' Li Xinwen felt that this man in front of him could be useful in the future."I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you did not hear what I said," Li Xinwen said, his voice cold and unwavering. "I'll give you a chance. Put down your weapon and submit, or lay your life down here."
