Chapter 39 - XIX. Double Crosses

Celestine and Strife wore the harness and attached the rappel line. Celestine activated her flashlight and so did Strife.

"Guess were improvising." Celestine said.

Strife chuckled under his breath. He looked down and began his descent. Celestine smiled and repelled down also. It was a quick descend but not to the lab itself. They landed on the lab but not quite inside it. There was a big open space between the floor and the hole they made. On their left runs a giant tube, it was vibrating and gave cold air. They deduced that it was the ventilation shaft.

As they inspected further there were humongous steel beams supporting the lab prevent the mountain from caving in. Dhurnuth and Siltoin approached the pair.

"We'll make a hole here. Which I assume will lead us to where the codex is" Dhurnuth said.

"And where our friends are." Strife added.

"Right"

Strife took out a small laser pointing looking thing. He pressed it against the floor and turned it on. The lesser pointer emitted high frequency waves that started to cut the floor. He began slowly and surely to cut open a circle big enough for them to enter. As it was finished they simply jumped down in the same order. They found themselves in the middle of the lab. Strife activated his holowatch to track me.

"Straight ahead." He told everyone.

They continued on the path. Straight ahead they went. There times that they reach a locked door but it was no problem as they simply blew it up.

As they moved on there was one oath that was completely destroyed. Rubble everywhere and the path was completely blocked off. Celestine looked at the bedris and noticed the corpse of the dogs that chased us crushed. Siltoin looked at it as well and was caught in both horror and awe. They kept moving until the saw an elevator. All of them boarded it and reached the uppermost level.

There they tracked our signal to be closed. But the signal isn't the only one that's closed, so is the path to us. Without hesitation they planted explosives on the door. Dhurnuth handed Siltoin the detonator. Siltoin pressed it and burst the door open.

Julia and I heard a loud thud above. The sudden blast sent out waves of dust to fly out. We watch slowly to see what might come out. I held out my gun. Slowly a silhouette of the space dog got out. I fired a shot. It missed then it screamed at me.

"Friendly. Dhamit!" Strife rushed out near me.

"Hey" I tried to calm the situation down.

Celestine followed after Strife. Then two other people followed, the ones we saw on the footage. Their abductors. I pretended to be shocked.

"Hello, Mr. Rover."  Siltoin greeted me.

"Hi. Do I know you?" I replied with an innocent tone.

"Who I am does not matter. What I plan however does." Siltoin slowly paced near me. "I am a businessman seeking the codex."

"What for?"

"Unlimited monetary possibilities. See I plan to build a zoo filled with extinct creature from near and far. I'll use-"

"I know what you're thinking. And I have at least three movies to prove you wrong." I interrupted his speech. Because I know what he's planning to do. He's planning to make an alien Jurassic Park, which truly sucks.

"Regardless of your opinion I want you to hand me over the codex."

"Why would I do that?"

"Because we agreed on it on our call."

"Didn't remember" I tried to frustrate him.

"That's it!" Dhurnuth shouted at me. He activated his blaster bracelet thing. He aimed it at me. "Where's the codex"

"I don't have it" I replied as I raised my hand. Julia looked at me scared so did Strife and Celestine.

"Where"

I pointed out at the glass container where the codex is. It looked like it was before we got it, gold dust and hovering codex. Dhurnuth approached the codex. He laughed. Siltoin saw this opportunity and laughed as well.

"Very good. Dhurnuth please take it and bring it over." Siltoin ordered him.

Dhurnuth looked at Siltoin. He aimed his gun at him. Siltoin turned pale instantly.

"What are you doing? I thought we work together."

"You hired me to help you find the codex. Now you found it, I'll simply secure this one"

"If you're planning to sell it to the highest bidder then I'll just pay you right now!" Siltoin tired to bargain to the man that betrayed him.

"Oh that's not how I'll gain from the codex… See I saw those creatures that were crushed. And I thought to myself if the codex made it, maybe I can make my own army of mutants and sell them… I have a steady supply of army and credits"

Dhurnuth laughed. He was kinda proud of his evil plan and I have to say it kinda works. But then again I have seen three movies that tells me it's a bad idea.

"Well it's just one of you and five of us... how do you think that odds stacked against you" Julia asked Dhurnuth genuinely.

"Well I can kill my employer first, then you, next is the lady, the men over there, and lastly that hairy beast." Dhurnuth replied as he pointed to each one of us. He fixed his gun on Siltoin. "I squeeze this… I'll make sure five bodies drop." Dhurnuth exclaimed proudly.

"Well that's good if we stuck around. But seeing how it is… We'll be going while you" I replied as I pressed a detonator in my hand.

Dhurnuth quickly looked around, he was trying to figure out what trap I might place. I smiled briefly and glanced at the codex. It turned out to be just Julia's holowatch projecting the codex concealing a magnetic hook I placed earlier. The hook grabbed Dhurnuth. The pull was intense that we heard the thud as his back hit the wall. He let go of his gun. I walked near his gun and kicked it out of his reach.

"Stick around" I finished my one-liner and grinned.

"You think this'll keep me for long?" Dhurnuth shouted in frustration.

"Well we'll just get the codex and be on our merry way…"

Dhurnuth filled with rage shook himself. He aggressively rattled. As he kept throwing tantrums suddenly the ground started to shake.

"Earthquakes?" Julia asked.

The tremors rumbled steadily. Then it stopped. Dust from the ceiling fell out. We observed the lab. Then out of nowhere with an ominous voice echoed throughout the building.

"Main lab, compromised. Initiating self destruct protocol."

We looked at each other. As if waiting for a countdown. But there wasn't one. Boom. We all heard it from somewhere. Then the ground shook and debris started to fall down. We all looked at each other, nodded and ran out.

We had no choice but to leave Dhurnuth behind. I mean it was logical, would you rescue your would be killer? Exactly. As we ran we heard his scream at us. We ignored it because we were running for dear life.

As we ran a considerable time and distance away from Dhurnuth we started to relax a little. But not too relax that we forgot that the whole mountain will collapse on us. As we ran our faces were filled with relief and joy. But Siltoin's face was painted by betrayal. His eyes were opened to the true nature of this job. Celestine came close to him. She wanted to console the man but as she opened her mouth, what she said was not heard by anyone. As a loud bang paralyzed all of us in the moment.
