Section: STORIES FOR THE SEEKER

96. The blind man and the snake

A blind man was wandering in the Himalayas. He was searching for a staff to guide himself. He stumbled upon a snake which was stiff and frozen due to the cold. He picked it up, thinking that it was a staff, and happily started using it.

An enlightened master who was passing by saw this shocking sight. He shouted, 'What you are holding is a snake, not a staff! Drop it!'

The blind man started shouting, 'No! This is such a nice staff! Are you trying to steal it from me? You are asking me to drop it so that you can pick it up!' The master said. 'Fool! I don't need a staff. I am not blind. And what you are carrying is a snake! The sun will rise soon, the snake will come back to life and it will kill you.'

Even after this, the blind man was not ready to drop the staff. Then the master said, 'Even if you don't believe me, it is my responsibility to save you.' So he snatched the snake and tried to throw it away.

The blind man started beating the master with the same staff. But the master said, 'Even if you beat me, it is ok. It is my responsibility to save you because you don't know.' He took the snake and threw it away.

Soon the sun rose, and the snake came back to life. Another passerby who saw this started shouting, 'Snake! Snake!' The blind man was shocked to know that it was indeed a snake that he

had been holding in his hands a few minutes back. He fell at the master's feet and begged his forgiveness for doubting him.

Listen: the master's compassion is nol the way you understand the way you want it to be. The master does not show the soft compassion that will make you weak: his is the tough compassion that will wake you up to the snake you are holding in your hand!
