Ekko ran through the streets of Umbra, kicking up dust as she went. She was late, so late. She and everyone else in the city were so desperate to find their next meal, that any job was hard to get, let alone keep because the amount of applicants.
The previous day Ekko had been lucky enough to be accepted to work at the library. It was a good job, well paying at ten coppers a day, and not to hard to do. If she was late today, her first day, her chances of keeping that job were next to nothing.
Each time her feet hit the cobblestone road loud smack. The sun was just starting to peak over the tops of the building. The merchants were opening their shops, their wears glittering in comparison to streets around them. Grime coated everything in the city. The smell of sweat and dirt pungent. Homeless were everywhere, housing was available, but with all taxes no one could keep one.
Ekko arrived at the building just in time. The building was huge with beautiful stained glass windows decorating its sides. It had been built in a different time, when luxury like this had been a norm. She walked up the faded marble stairs and through the large oak wood doors into the library.
