I stood there for a split second before regaining my composure and kneeling down to inspect the body at my feet. I gingerly lifted away the hood of the moss brown cloak to reveal a sharp pointed face. Along with the unmistakable translucent wings that protruded from underneath the cloak I already knew what I was looking at.
Fairy. Female.
Taking my hand I began flipping the body over onto its side to get a look at its front only to stop half way when I felt something hard underneath the cloak. Flipping the body over entirely I got my first look at the killing blow: a large gaping hole, clothing charred around the entry point, flesh ragged and seared around the entry point, no exit wound. All signs pointed that the wound was inflicted with magic, a weak form of magic missile probably.
Out of the corner of my eye, as I was moving away from the body, I caught sight of the Orc woman who was currently staring at me earnestly, as if she was asking if the fairy was ok. I stood up and wiped my hands against my pants legs in case I got any blood on me.
"She's gone", I said walking over to my desk and pulling out my note book again.
"I saw a fairy once she was pristine almost as if from a dream", the orc lady said her voice filled with the kind of shock that I was currently suppressing.
"Yeah, same here," I said turning my gaze back to the body.
Turning back to my note book I flipped to the back where I kept any business cards I received on the job. Grabbing one that was printed on manila stock paper I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed the number.
"Dan's Auto body how can I help you today?"
"Hey Dan its me Fletcher."
"Oh hey, hows it going?"
"I'm in a bit of a bind a the moment, you wouldn't happen to still have that contact in the fairy world do you?"
"Of course I do they always have the best shit for my side business."
"That's good can you have them send some police by my place as soon as they can, I have a dead fairy in my doorway."
"Holy shit, yeah man I'll give them a call. Any idea who it is?"
"Nope dead as soon as she hit the floor."
"Damn, I'll put in a call as soon as I can, I'll let you know when they're coming."
"Thanks Dan."
"Yeah no problem."
I ended the call after that and pocketed my phone.
"looks like I have a good couple hours till the fairy guard get here, should be enough time to deal with your wraith problem", I said while pushing the garage door opener button hanging on the wall, "we'll have to go out this way, if you don't mind. Can't disturb the crime scene."
I caught a nice gust of wind as the garage door opened, fresh wet air engulfing my senses. The rain was still pouring, not the best weather for fighting a wraith nor was it the best time of day, but I had to get this job done while the fairy guards made their way here it was the only way I had at the moment to stave off the shock and emotions that threatened to paralyze me.
Somebody had killed a living being, a fairy, and that fairy had come to my door seeking help. I didn't care who the bastard was that did it but they would pay for taking that life, it was the least I could do. However that was for later, 'bottle those emotions', I told myself, 'you can use them later, right now you have a wraith to fight'.
Looking over my shoulder I saw the orc lady still standing where she was, eyes fixed on the body on the floor.
"Hey", I called, "you coming or what?"
