Chereads / How I became a Dungeon Monster / Chapter 2 - Learning

Chapter 2 - Learning

Alex, the newly formed Changeling monster slowly made his way down a low light tunnel of stone. His current world had grown boring really quickly after he had seen his hundredth rock and glowing vegetation. He hadnt bothered to mess with the moss or the mushrooms because they were spread all along and gave off enough light that he could safely make his way without any trouble.

His head felt less foggy as he crept along but his memories still seemed to be painted over with only hints showing through. For example he remember his name, that he had lived a simple life, knew how to talk and think but his knowledge all seemed to stem from another world. he knew the world he came from didnt have monsters or magic but the one he was now in obviously did. he knew words that only after focusing on them for a bit made sense like "car" or "phone", but after he stopped focusing their meaning and images were pushed back in his mind.

A noise suddenly caught his attention and he crouched lower to the ground and move a little slower until he came to an archway that lead into a larger room. the room was fairly circular with two different openings, the one he was standing in and then a small path way that lead to what looked like the mouth of the cave. inside the room there was thrown about remains of different creatures and bones which where largely unrecognizable.

not realizing he was holding his breath he glanced around and saw that it was currently empty. nothing in the room seemed to indicate that anything intelligent lived here so he moved on in and reached for one of the bones.

He was unsure how to use his absorb ability but right as the thought crossed his mind he felt a slight tingle in his mind and a thought beeped into his mind, "absorb unknown creature bone?"

mentally confirming the thought he felt the bone turn to dust in his hands. another beep seemed to go off in his mind and he heard, "absorption success. gained ability to form a basic skeletal form or features."

Well that was easy. although it didnt tell him what the bone was from he at least had something new he could manipulate. so far he had only given himself a bit of unformed human features on his face.

he concentrated for a second and he felt as if he grew more substantial or at least gained a little more weight. feeling along his arms he could feel that he know possessed a semblance of a skeleton all though it didnt seem to feel like how he remember his skeleton feeling or moving when he was human.

"Who really pays that much attention to their skeleton anyways," was the thought that went through his head as he tried to get his new form shifted around like he wanted. As he did this he noted that his mana levels, which he assumed meant how much magic he could use, didnt decrease.

"So it seems this is just something I can do at will," he thought to himself, "I wonder what else I can do with this."

From his memories of his old world he remember movies and books that had different people who used magic or had special abilities. instead of thinking of just his skeleton inside of his body he began thinking of using it to form a weapon. he felt resistance and then a message appear in his mind. "level too low."

"hmmm," he thought and he shifted gears and used the bones to just form around his hands and fingers. a small coating of bone formed along his fingers and on his hands and if he concentrated enough he was able to make some spots a bit tougher or sharper than others but this still seemed limited for now. feeling a bit ambitious he tried coating his whole body this way but ones only able to form small patches of a bone shell around his form. After doing this he decided to just absorb the rest of the bones in the room. everything he got this way was still viewed as unknown bones and only seemed to strengthen the skeleton feature he had just gotten. when he focused on his skill and stats he was able to view them but only one thing had changed so far.

He felt a little annoyed at all the information that seemed to flood his mind when he thought of his abilities and just like that his view shifted slightly and all that appeared where his abilities. the stats and other random information faded to the back of his mind. Although perhaps it would be interesting to know all of that, right now he felt it was better to just focus on learning and growing his abilities which would make him stronger. he knew this because he felt stronger and more sturdy even though his strength and constitution levels hadnt changed. he even had formed what he felt like were usable weapons from the sharp and thickened bone structures on and around his body.

He was still a bit wary about leaving the cave or even approaching the entrance since he didnt know what this world was like one the outside so he began to make his way back and down the other path. before he had left the room though he bent down to pick up what looked like a bone he had missed but instead it was nothing more than a white rock. before he could toss it away though he thought that he wouldn't beable to absorb it and a thought entered his head, "absorb stone?"

stunned it took him a second before he absorbed it. when he did he felt a new line appear in his form list, which now listed Stone as a possible shape and form material he could use. he couldn't believe that he was also able to absorb the stone and when he pulled up his list of abilities he saw that there wasnt anything there that said he couldn't. after thinking along those lines he thought that he had heard about stone golems as well as other types of golems and elementals before. His head really did feel foggy because it took him this long to realize. though once he thought this he decided to head back to the spot he had awoken in and absorb some more minerals and some of the glowing mushrooms and moss.

Having reached his original starting point he sat down and began to absorb the bits of rock and plant life around him. The first initial beep after absorbing new items reached him but he just kept on until every lose rock and nearly every plant was absorbed. he left just enough to still cast a decent bit of light with in this area of the cave.

he felt as if he should feel different or at least full but it seemed as if he hadnt changed any. only his stats showed any change. He know possessed the ability to emit a soft glowing blue to green hue of light from the mushrooms, as well as a poisonous glowing spore that depending on the level of concentration could be sleep inducing or altogether lethal. The stone he had absorbed he found that he could mix pretty well with his bone like shell and create a more decent form of protection for his previously weak form.

"I wonder if this cave has any metal or other valuable minerals," he said to himself as he tried shifting his bodies composition from bone to rock and then back to it's original form. it seemed that switching to his original form happened very quickly while the rock was now a little bit faster than the bone. it seemed the amount he absorbed would change how fast he could use it as well as the level of durability and area of coverage each material possessed.

he tried forming a solid frame of stone but found that either his skill was too low or he didnt have a correct mental understanding of the form and shape the body needed for it to move and function properly. so he settled for a mixture of bone and rock covering his body with one arm acting as a shield of rock and one being a bone and rock spiked gauntlet. his head and back was protected with a layer of rock over bone more so than the front since he wasnt sure what to expect from his surroundings or from fights. most of his experiences in fighting came from things he had seen or read about.

after having experimented a little with his current shape and new forms he realized that a small pulsating form of pain could be felt behind his eyes and a slowly growing wave of exhaustion was forming. After constantly shifting and altering himself so much it seemed he was getting a bit of mental strain and a bit of tiredness that seemed to stem from his very spirit.

Deciding that he was pretty safe where he was since he had been the only thing alive except for the plants near him he decided to lay down and rest. Still feeling a bit wary he curled up and made himself look like nothing more a large rock near the wall. feeling satisfied that he would awaken if anyone came near, much less happen to discover him, he quieted his mind and rested.
