Chapter 3 - chapter 3: What the morning brings

grim faces listen as I recount the events of the night, my mic on so those outside can hear. it is after dinner for some and after breakfast for others but here we gather as they listen to the information I have gathered, "our military has been called home. the national gaurd and the police are out in force, they are fighting to no avail, ten states are now confirmed to have accounts of the virus including ours. the casualty count is estimated at a current 500,000 and climbing in the last report. the virus spreads through bodily fluids, and has an incubation time is estimated at 6 hours. the virus cant survive in water and isnt airborne either. martial law has been declared. the boarders of every state are closed, there will be no flights or boats out of America, as of right now all communication out of the infected states has been cut off and there are only government issued messages about what is happening inside the states on tv, fm, and am stations. there are some ham radio operators from inside asking for help or describing whats happening and from all accounts it seems this is a sort of 'zombie' outbreak. the affected can scream or moan but not form any real words, have no restraint and will attack anyone, family, friends, and will not stop unless the brain is destroyed. they will not react to any attempt at negotiations, and cannot preform tasks such as turning a door handle, waving, but have been seen to be able to climb stairs after multiple attempts. they will be unintelligent and will fall off the tops of buildings, into uncovered holes and have no fear for thier own saftey. the affected have no memory and will not even think to avoid a very simple trap, but they are ruthless and will not think twice about attacking an unaffected person. All establishments are closed other than hospitals and police departments within the affected states." my revelations have left people speechless, and children dont seem to understand if they are below the age of 10, all of them over to the side in a small play area, those 15 and over sitting among the adults. dad thanks me and i go to stand against the wall to let him stand in the center of the semicircle. " my friends. my grand daughter through the night was ever vigilant, watching for the saftey of our compound as well as confirming our worst fears and greatest purpose in this world. humanity will survive. if not anywhere elae, then here. many of you are families, many of you are single, and though our community for now is small I have confidence that in time it will grow, but cautiously for the world is a dangerous place now more than ever. please. return to your duties and today is the official enstatement of the practiced work shifts of nine and a half hours." as people speak among themselves Vincent comes to speak to me as i finish speaking into my ear piece and turn off mic. he seems logical and more calm because hes here instead of out there but fearful. we walk to our room as we speak and i answer his questions about his placement and how his trucking will be implimented later as practiced and how the groups and singles themselves were recruited. here i am all knowing, but there are certain things he doesnt need to hear. all the frantic screams for help over the radio, the pleas I heard that will most likely not be answered by anyone, and how many of them had already gone dark.
