Olivia tried to put it out of her mind the way Bernard had looked at her during dinner she could taste his hate from the tip of his tongue. He looked at her like she was something foul. Even though she looked back at him like she didn't care, she wanted to hide and cower away.
She had finished the house chores and cleaned up the whole house. Lucas had gone painting, so she decided to stand outside and feel the breeze on her face. She saw a shadow behind and she turned abruptly.
Bernard was standing behind her. He looked like he wanted to say something. "Morning" she greeted him when she felt it was growing awkward.
He sneered at her, "So you do know how to greet."
Olivia didn't know how to reply to him. She stared at him blankly.
"Well aren't you just lucky that you landed on a goldmine?" he carried on.
"I don't know what you mean by that" She replied to him.
"Don't try to act all innocent. Obviously, you do know what I am talking about."
She was emotionally exhausted, "Look I don't know what you mean if you have something to say then just say so."
"You think I don't know that you are with Lucas just for the money?"
Olivia felt her heartbeat fast. "I am not, he is the one who came to me. I never forced him into anything."
"You could have refused the offer; do you think that I will let you leave with a dime of his money?"
She wouldn't let him speak to her this way. "It's not your money either."
She saw that she had gotten under his skin because he was fuming. "I have known Lucas for a way much longer than you."
"So?" she replied. "I am his wife."
He looked as if he was about to snap. "You think just because you are his wife that it counts for anything?"
"Yes, it does. It counts to Lucas."
He laughs at her outright, "You think just because you are married to Lucas that it changes anything? You are just a prostitute that a lot of men have used and most of all you are just trash! Do you hear me?"
Olivia heard him but she couldn't let him get to her, why did problems have to follow her everywhere she went? When she thought she overcome one problem, another one arose.
"What do you want from me? " As she replied to him.
" He is blinded by love for now, but do you think it will last forever? Lucas is a smart man Olivia. " as he rubbed it in her face. "All he sees is your beauty and that's about it. When he gets to know you more the more, he will realize you are just brawn without brains."
She felt very hurt at his words, but she will be damned if she let him see that. She smiled at him "Well we will have to see what happens shall we?"
"Do you think you can get away with this? I can't believe you have the nerve to take advantage of my friend and you think I will let you get away with it!" As Bernard went on.
Olivia reminded herself to breath and not to think. "Is that all?" she asked him.
"How much is it?" he asked.
"How much is it for me to sleep with you? I will pay you double that amount to see if you are even worth it."
She smiled at him, "I don't think you can afford me in this lifetime."
He looked like he wanted to pounce on her. "Yes, I might not be able to afford you because you are worth nothing. No man should ever pay for garbage like you."
She tilted her head. "Yet they do. I even got married as a result."
"Yes, you did but it won't last that long because some as shallow and worthless like you can't keep up with a man like Lucas." As he laughed at her.
"What are you two talking about?" as Lucas emerged.
"Nothing," Bernard answered quickly.
"Excuse me," Olivia said, and she left them. She went back to Lucas's room and she sat on the edge of the bed.
It took her to the dark place she was trying to escape. She hadn't wanted to be a prostitute. People always hurled out cruel things to her as if it wasn't enough that the job she did was eating away at her soul. Who would enjoy doing such a job?
All she was to most people was garbage just like Bernard had said. She didn't know what Lucas saw in her.
