Dioha somehow made it to the force field's entrance. His stamina and strength was all gone. He literally dragged himself to and through the force field. After the net had caught a soldier who was on the verge of wrestling him to the ground, nothing and no one else had come close to catching him. Talking about the net and the soldier, that was some serious stroke of good luck. The soldier had Dioha, the net too. It was either going to be one or the other, but never both. The soldier being that close to Dioha at that point only spelled doom for him. He had flung himself at Dioha the exact same time the net was about wrapping around Dioha. Dioha had glanced behind briefly, the same way he'd been doing since he started running. He caught a glimpse of the net and reacted in a split second. Dioha threw himself to the left believing since the projectile had morphed into the net there was no way it would keep following him again. He had to just make sure he didn't get caught in the net. The net found the soldier in Dioha's place, caught him and stunned him. Dioha was out of the force field, safe for now on the other side.
The soldiers were waiting around the edges of the force field, daring not to get close. Dioha looked back, certain their leader was working on turning off the invisible defense mechanism so they could still chase him. Other surviving Ngamés were far ahead, running for their lives as it was. The humans, who were deemed weak and beneath the Ngamés, had given them all a cruel awakening. Though this wasn't a proper battle scenario, it still was a rude shock.
Dioha knew he had just minutes, if not seconds, left to pass out. He couldn't stay here, he had to keep moving farther and farther away from this place. Dioha ran, stumbled, rolled and crawled as he tried to put distance between himself and the humans who were shouting back and forth as they relayed orders in a bid to lower the force field and come after him. Dioha heard the sound of rushing water and wondered if his drowsiness was making him hear things. He changed directions and staggered towards the sound.
Colonel Sebastian was livid. He had pursued his target to the force field hoping to capture him. Unable to get to him on time, the colonel instructed the computer geek to shut down the force field so they could continue chasing the target. The analyst refused citing that they needed authorization from higher quarters to do that. The colonel had threatened to have the Analyst stripped and flogged, and also demoted. Enraged at being disobeyed, the colonel pulled a gun on the analyst. He was going to squeeze the trigger when his captain informed him that he had a call.
The colonel was in no happier mood after answering the phone. He had just been instructed by his higher ups not to pursue. The Major said on no account should the force field be turned off, be it temporarily or permanently. He was then ordered to return to base.
Dioha staggered on not knowing if he was any closer to the source of the sound or not. He just had to keep moving. Thankfully there weren't any traps around, if not he'd have had a hell of a time. He bundled his way forward till he got to the edge of a cliff. He could hardly see or hear anything. Suddenly the ground was gone from under his feet as he found himself in the air falling headfirst. Dioha heard a splash and felt the cold wetness of water seep into his body as he slowly sank to the bottom of the river.
The Enforcer opened his eyes. He was disoriented at first, and couldn't really tell where he was and why he was feeling the sensation of moving when he was lying very still. He noticed for the first time that his hands and legs were bound with metal cuffs. He looked up and around. He was in a large vehicle with human soldiers. They all were staring at him. He jerked his hands apart and the cuffs broke. Someone said fuck, then the whole army jumped on him in a bid to suppress him. Try as he might he just couldn't throw them all off. The weight of the bodies pinning him was just much. Someone brought a needle and a syringe close to his head. He was stabbed in the neck with it. The soldier got up as another soldier who was atop the Enforcer shouted, "More!!!"
"That was the last one," the soldier with the syringe replied taking another look at the syringe in his hands. The Enforcer strained and groaned as he gradually began to heave the numerous bodies piled up on him.
As Dioha slowly sank, his last thoughts were chaotic. He was thinking about his attempt to get to her, about his inability to fully show his might in battle, his vacant seat on the council. The old man who had been sort of like a teacher when he was dead. His time with the old man seemed like a thousand years ago. He could hardly remember anything from his time with the old man.
Dioha knew he was drowning but there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. As he lost consciousness, the last thing he saw were three crocodiles swimming towards him.
The truck bounced up, out of a gallop. The terrain was bumpy and rough. That bounce propelled everyone off solid ground for a split second. That split second was all it took for the Enforcer to break free. First he threw everyone off him using the bounce of the vehicle, then he sprang up and began beating up the soldiers. His wounds were partially healed as his body had gotten enough time to heal a little. The soldiers were having a rough time in the truck. Someone called the colonel in the leading vehicle and reported the incident. The wagon stopped and the colonel stepped out with a special gun in hand. He strode purposefully towards the truck. He got to the back of the truck just as two soldiers were thrown out.
"Stand down!" the colonel barked. The soldiers, on turning and seeing the colonel with a gun aimed at them, moved out of his line of shot. That left the Enforcer alone facing the barrel of the gun.
