Chapter 58 - Premonition

It had been six months now since Heron had come to Jarenkul. Or since he'd been in the capital anyway. Time had flown by so quickly. Maybe cause he'd had his nose stuck in a book over half the time. Plus it had been rather enjoyable. He had enjoyed making these friends who he felt would remain his friends even after he left.

Having figured out what his problem was, he was no longer spending quite as much time in the library. Elswyth had been dragging him outside more and more. His skin was several shades darker now as he had tanned quite a bit. Of course he was still no where near as tanned as Elswyth was. He was somewhat envious she never sunburned like he did. She just tanned.

It had been okay when they had just went out in the mornings, but in the heat of the day he easily burned. So they still mostly went out in the mornings. Though, the tanner he got, the less he burned.

Anyway, they had seen some progress on how far they could go from each other. But there had been some other side effects of their mental exercises. They had become more in tune with each other. Sometimes it was almost freaky.

Like Elswyth had actually felt his discomfort on more than one occasion now and reacted to it. As of now it wasn't anything major, but he was a bit worried that it might become even more muddled. Which could become awkward if it went too far. A sudden insight here and there was one thing but what if it became continuous?

Heron sighed to himself. There was no point worrying about it. It would be as it would be.

"What's the sigh for?" The voice of his elven friend broke into Heron's thoughts.

Heron glanced up at Kur, who seemed as if he wasn't really paying attention as he went through a book, checking it against a piece of paper. He smiled at the sight, "Nothing major. I was just fretting a little."

He didn't want to really get into it. Afterall he had just decided not to worry about it.

"Ah, well if you are sure I won't press it," Kur glanced up from his paper and book, a slight furrow between his eyebrows. "But I'll listen if you need me to."

"I appreciate it." Heron laughed. "But I think I'll be fine."

"The offer stands for anything. Anytime."

"Thanks." Heron couldn't help but smile. He'd already figured if he ever needed advice Kur was a good person to turn to. He bit his lip, "Same to you. I may be younger than you and inexperienced but I'd be more than glad to listen to your problems as well."

He saw the hint of a smile that flickered across the elven man's lips. "Good to know."

"Can you two stop getting sappy?" Elswyth broke in, her voice though was not particularly annoyed. Instead almost laughing. She ruffled Heron's hair, "We all know you two are good friends, okay? I don't think you need to be having this conversation."

"Ah," Heron said, then burst into laughter. She had a point, but, "Sometimes its good to say it. Just to reaffirm a good relationship."

"I'm not being dragged into this." She sighed. "But if you two feel the need go right ahead."

"I wouldn't expect you to, El. You aren't the sort who goes for that anyway."

"He's right." Kur nodded in agreement, "You're more the sort to show affection with actions, and not really use verbal language."

"I could verbalize, I just see no point. If my actions are clear do I need to say how I feel?"

"You use words to express dislike."

"Yeah, cause I just can't kill everyone I dislike but I can easily show affection rather than saying it."

Heron coughed a bit. He wasn't surprised – such a statement suited her. It was just there were different ways to show dislike then killing right?

He sighed again. As much as he liked Elswyth that statement was a bit worrying. He knew that she wasn't exactly bloodthirsty but others might not.

As he sighed, the girl in question pulled him to lean on her shoulder and patted his head as if trying to tell him he could depend on her.
