Chapter 1 - The Beginning of it all

A lone rider sped through the forest at a breakneck pace that made it seem as though he was flying. Were it not for the ashen colored horse he rode he would be long dead by the hands of whatever abominations that trailed him. The foreboding snaps and crashes of the various branches and trees behind him made his heart pound even harder and break out in a fearful sweat. The beasts were getting closer to their prey and once they caught him there would be no mercy. Urging his mount to gain an even greater, he navigated the narrow path that was lit by the weak light of waning moon that filtered through the tree tops and casted irregular shadows upon the ground. Casting a glance back down the way he had just come, he rounded a corner that opened to a clearing with a shear cliff wall on one side and forest on the other. As he cleared the tree line the loud twang of a heavy bow was heard and a arrow as red as blood sprouted from his right calf and pinned his leg to the currently dying horse. The legs of the animal buckled and it violently pitched forward sending the rider flying. The arrow that pinned his leg to the saddle snapped where it connected the two, leaving a jagged edge and stiff fletchings in his calf. He sailed through air the and landed heavily at a diagonal angle. The momentum forced him to roll causing further damage to the wound in his leg. The arrow stub glowed a fierce bright red and began to burn its way through his leg. With pain searing it's way through his leg, he gripped the burning arrow with his bare hand and yanked it out before it could completely render the leg useless. Having no time to stop the blood gushing out from the wound, he crawled back to the dead horse and removed the long sword from its sheath and took a pitch black bundle from a saddle bag. Standing up with help from the sword, he limped as quickly as he could from the approaching beasts towards the base of the cliff. He did not go far when another twang sounded but this time the arrow pierced through his back and narrowly his heart. He pitched forward without the strength the brace his fall and landed face first in the cool loam. Mottled green and grey boot filled his field of vision as the wearer flipped him over to his back and proceeded to grin at him. Standing above him were four people who were garbed in green and grey camouflage, the fifth person however was clothed in deep maroon and exuded a commanding aura. With a snap of his fingers the beasts emerged from the woods and surrounded the group in the clearing. With inhuman strength, the one in maroon lifted the injured rider to eye level. He brought the rider closer to him and whispered in his ear " where is it?" The rider could only grin at this and with the last ounces of strength that remained within him he head butted the man in maroon in the nose. The man dropped him and the rider collapsed back to the ground in a heap. With dark blood coming from his nose, the man picked up the rider once more and yelled " WHERE IS IT?" The rider simply responded " you shall not have it." With that he threw the bundle at his feet and it passed into the shadow. With his task complete he let out one final breath to mark his passing. The man in maroon threw the lifeless rider to ground in front of the beast and turned to his companions. " Find where ever that wretch sent it to and bring it back. We cannot let them have it or they will awaken what sleeps for eternity " he said to them. He then turned and walked towards the forest and disappeared into the trees. The beasts, seeing their master leave , stopped devouring the body and obediently followed. The four that remained in the clearing shared a look among themselves then separated to melt into the shadows.
