Chapter 17 - Vongrod

"500,000 gold!?" I was expecting the staff to at least cost 1,000,000 gold or more, but that price was like a steal. "Why are you giving the staff to me for such a price when it easily should be way more expensive?" Jeffery snorted, "Did you forget the story I told you earlier? There is nobody left that can see the staff except for you I guess, I've been trying to get rid of it for years, but that's a bit difficult when you can't even see or touch the damn thing." I grinned and turned towards Verial who already was frowning from the idea. "Verial could we please get this staff? I mean when we are in that 'place' it will be hard to spend the money at all." Verial's expression grimaced, "Sire even if I didn't want you to get this staff I don't really have much of a choice but to listen to your commands." Verial's statement took me back for a moment. I got used to him acting more like a babysitter than a servant, but ultimately he still is my servant who has to obey my orders. I flashed a grin towards Verial who grunted, "so Verial let's purchase this staff." Verial sighed, "very well sire." Verial walked towards the man who was watching in amusement at our interaction. "You have a very interesting master and servant relationship, most masters would strike down a servant for talking back to them or even trying to just engage in conversation with them. I must say you are a lucky man." Verial nodded, "yes sire is indeed an unusual master."

I glared at Verial, but he just smiled back at me in return. Verial brought the ring up to his eye level and asked the man where we could do our transaction. "Oh yeah sorry bout that, haven't had a payment close to this in a couple of years." The man waved at us to follow him and proceeded to lead us to a back room that looked pretty bland except a table in the middle of the room. "Sorry for the poor hospitality you're seeing, but I haven't had to use this room for quite a long time." I shook my head in reply, "It's fine Jeffery, I don't need to be treated like I'm the shit." Jeffery looked stunned for a second before chuckling, "heheh, I like the way you carry yourself, you're definitely an interesting person." I was a bit baffled at his comment, however, I didn't get to reply because I heard a female voice coming from somewhere in the store. "Where are you, the shop owner, you damn peasant stop making me wait!" I became surprised for a second and listened to the man's response, "Ah sorry my lady, but I am doing a transaction right now that requires my focus." The man was about to sit down until the woman yelled again, "excuse me, I am the daughter of Vongrod one of the lords of the Nocturnal Council you better get out here this instance or else you'll suffer the consequences!"

My opinion of whoever was speaking already had dropped considerably, she sounded like a spoiled brat who got whatever she wanted and didn't sound anywhere near what a Demon Lord should be. In books that I read Demon Lords were supposedly individuals who used their wits and strength to dominate over others, not flaunt their status that didn't even earn themselves. I was getting angrier by the second as I watched the man sigh and get up to go deal with the spoiled brat. I felt a hand grabbing my arm, I looked up to see Verial who just shook his head sadly. I feel so weak my character is supposed to be a Demon Lord yet I can't stand up to another Demon Lord in my presence. "Trust me, sire, one day you'll be strong enough to take on another Demon Lord the Land of Exile is harsh, but if we can survive then we and especially you will come out stronger than ever before." I smiled at Verial's optimism though I still didn't know whether I'd be able to make it. Hell, I was still unsure that if I died my character would be reset or something, I didn't want to test that experiment out so I would do my dang best to make it out without dying. There was also still my one issue of not being able to log out, but the admins or whoever will fix this issue sooner or later. "Thanks, Verial I hope you're right.

A man was pacing around his office unsure of what to do with a recent massive issue that was brought to his attention. He had a beer gut with a stubble that covered almost his entire face and wore a uniform that matched the rest of the Oversight management team. His subordinates were nervously watching him, waiting for his response. Finally after a minute or so he turned to face his subordinates. "So you're telling me that we got a player who has somehow transferred to the Underworld into the most powerful Demon Lord in the game?" Both of the workers looked at each other waiting to see who'd be the first to reply before one of them nervously spoke up, "Uh, yes sir this incident was discovered just a day ago by Admin-Chung Zhang." After he was finished speaking he turned to his right to see his colleague Chung Zhang who looked nervous as he was. The man sighed, "how did this even happen?" He asked, looking at Chung Zhang. Chung Zhang hesitated for a moment before replying, "You see the computer system that manages the system still has a sweep check where it scans the system for any errors or unwanted things and deletes them. So basically I went and looked at Dagon, the player who became a Demon Lord. The information I found was pretty normal, he spawned in Eliatrope of the Divine Light Empire where he went and found a being who dabbled in the dark arts to get that power. Though this is where everything starts to get a bit freaky. He ended up walking to the boundary of the city to activate his power, but the thing is that idiot didn't actually walk outside of the boundary of the city. Which meant when he transformed into a demon the high priest immediately killed him. It sounds all normal, but that's until I looked into the Demon Lord he somehow became.

The Demon Lord Dagon was supposed to be killed today by the succubus and she would absorb all his power making her the strongest being in the Underworld as you already know. However, Verial his servant ended up bringing him to the outside of the city to do something which delayed the time when he was supposed to be killed. Anyways, now this is the weirdest part of it all, the system was going through its clean sweep and ended up seeing the player Dagon and the Demon Lord Dagon both as the same entity. I don't know how this happened exactly, but I think it had to do with the number of coincidences stacked on top of each other. When the player Dagon transformed into a demon he had the same dark alignment as the demon lord and various other things like being at what could be considered a boundary area all made them similar. Most important of all the system's clean sweep must have accidentally registered them as the same. The system mistook the player Dagon as the Demon Lord and reset the actual Demon Lord back to his place to restart the event. This should've worked out fine, but the problem was that the high priest smited him which killed him at the exact same time the system was resetting the Demon Lord. So the system mistook both of them as one as the same and shoved the player Dagon into the Demon Lord, which caused the player to gain control over the body." Chung Zhang took a gulp of air after finishing his long speech.

The man in charge who was listening was in complete and utter awe at the situation presented in front of him. "So you're telling me that a situation that had a one in a millionth chance of happening, happened?" Chung Zhang stared at the man and replied, "yes sir." The man slowly walked over his chair and sat down leaning it back as far as he could before letting out a curse, "shit."

"Errg! What is taking you so long peasant, hurry up I don't have all day!" The woman was impatiently stomping her foot waiting for a clerk or the owner to come out and treat her, but he was taking forever to come out. Finally, after what seemed like ages to her, he emerged and greeted her, "Ah, I am very sorry my lady for the delay is there anything I can do for you today?" He asked. She was upset that he took so long, but she was in a hurry today so she could let his behavior slide. "I've come looking for a high-quality chaos staff so show your best ones for me now." She demanded with a smile. "Yes, my lady this way please." She followed him to the corner of his shop where he presented various staffs to her before she found one that she liked. "Ah yes this one will be good, I'll take this one." She simply grabbed the staff and walked up to the counter waiting for the man to make his way over. "Well, my lady the price will be 100,000 gold." The woman without hesitation pulled out 10 coins that looked like platinum in color and handed it to Jeffery. He pulled out a box and opened it throwing the coins inside what appeared to be a spatial item. "Have a nice day my lady he." He said, and as he turned around to leave he heard her voice behind him. "Wait there for a moment. I didn't say you could leave peasant I'm also here for something else." Jeffery was getting a little impatient with her, but he was still able to maintain his regular expression. "Yes, what is it?" He asked. She gazed at him with a sly smile and replied, "You see my father told me that you had a void staff around here somewhere am I correct?" Her words caused Jeffery to freeze for a second, but he replied saying he already had sold it a while ago to another customer. "Hmm, you better not be lying to me Jeffery because my father will bring a void mage to confirm whether you are telling the truth or not. And if he finds out you were lying...well oh my will you be in trouble." She smirked as she finished her sentence.

Jeffery, on the other hand, had quite enough with her bullshit. He had put up with similar people like her who were also spoiled brats, but his own personal vendetta against the Nocturnal Council pushed him over the edge this time, "you're father won't find the void staff here, but even if he did that man wouldn't be able to do jack shit. You better realize who you are speaking to brat. I am Jeffery Maxwell, a high ranking officer in the Phoenix Union who has the same standing as your father's position. This means that you actually should be treating me with respect, young lady not acting like a damn monkey, now get out of my face you bitch!" The woman was shocked for a second before her expression morphed into a face of disgust. "How dare you treat me this way you-you peasant I am the daughter of Vongrod and I-" Before she could say anything more Jeffery got up in her face and yelled, "Get the hell outta my store!" The woman didn't want to admit it, but she was scared and hurriedly backed away towards the front door with the staff in hand. "I won't forget this you peasant-you-you commoner! I'll tell my father and he'll make-" Jeffery just simply stared at her and she finally gave up and ran out the door into the street, occasionally checking back behind her to see if the man was still staring at her.

After she was a distance away and the man could definitely no longer see her she pulled out a mana crystal and activated it. A couple seconds later the crystal suddenly shimmered and she could see her father sitting on his throne reading a book. He had a scar that ran down the left of his face and had a high cheekbone with jet black hair that was perfectly trimmed to his liking. He was pretty slim, yet he could easily wipe out anyone who stood in his way with the flick of his wrist. He pulled out the crystal and asked, "what is it, sweety?" "I-I was going to that dumb Phoenix shop as you asked to see if he had that staff or not. He claimed he didn't and said that he was a high ranking Phoenix officer and yelled at me to get out of his door. Can you believe it? That peasant had the audacity to threaten me?" She told him angrily, though she still was a bit fearful remembering when he yelled at her. The man's face scrunched up before replying, "this is horrible I can't believe he would treat my daughter this way. Don't worry sweety daddy will take care of it, you can come home, I've found some local Fallen men who I'd think you'll find that suits your taste." Her face lit up, "Thank you, daddy! I love you so much!" She grinned as they both shut their crystals off and she sauntered back her carriage.

The man, on the other hand, summoned the communication mage, who came kneeling down before him, "what can I do for you, my lord?" The man stared out of his window and then turned to the mage, "tell him that I got a mission for him to do."

I watched as Jeffery made his way back into the room and took a seat on one of the wooden chairs, "sorry that you had to hear that, I hate dealing with brats like that much less ones that are part of the Nocturnal Council. "Ah, that's alright I personally didn't like the sound of her either," I replied. Little did Jeffery know my respect for him had already jumped pretty high after hearing his encounter with that woman. "Uh, I don't mean to pry Jeffery, but is it true that you are a high ranking officer in the Phoenix Union?" Verial asked quizzically. Jeffery sighed, "yes I don't like talking about it much, but I am what could be considered our combat officer. I teach lads how to fight physically, I'm not much of a mage, however, I do know a few stuff here and there." "huh, interesting." Verial murmured. Jeffery clapped his hands together, "anyways let's get back on track here you want this staff right? Do you have enough platinum coins or are we gonna have to do this the old fashioned way?" "The old fashioned way, unfortunately," Verial replied sadly. "We only have 40 platinum coins, the rest are all in gold form." Jeffrey glanced at the platinum coins, "It's alright I have just the special thing to take care of this problem." He jumped up out of his seat and ran somewhere into his store, after a minute or so he came back with a large chest. The thing must have easily weighed over a ton and he showed no signs of struggling, guess that proves his strength as an officer of the Phoenix Union.

He lifted the chest open to reveal an odd space in the chest. "You see back in days we didn't have that luxury of a compact spatial area. We had to use a relative size that could carry things. But, as magic evolves the more stuff you can do with it." I only nodded in agreement and I watched as Verial held out his ring finger over the box closing his eyes concentrating and then a sea of gold flowed out from the ring. Not going to lie that was pretty awesome that Verial was pretty much just raining down gold into the chest. After two minutes Verial stopped and Jeffery closed the chest. I then walked up to the man and asked, "Aren't you worried that we didn't give you the proper number of gold?" Jeffery grinned, "Eh I trust you guys, you seem like good people who wouldn't lie to this old geezer." I laughed and watched Verial do the last step and handed him the 40 platinum coins. "Well, the staff is all yours now enjoy and have a nice rest of your day." I smiled back, grabbed the void staff, and headed out the front door with Verial.

Jeffrey watched them go down the street and disappeared within the crowd of people. He chuckled, little did they know he had an ability that allowed him to see their intentions. If he had found out that they even had a trace of ill will he would've never sold the staff to them. "Heheh I can't wait to see what you'll do with this power, Demon Lord Dagon."
