Chapter 18 - Contract

The world had never seemed so eerie before, trees became imposing and the normal chatter of animals became nothing more than foreign noise. The clear blue hue of the sky was no longer there, replaced instead by waning grey. The breeze that was carried along like the breath of a god brushed passed and even seemed to pass through me as I felt nothing.

Pulling its weapon back and out of my chest, the monster grinned with a face full of smug pride. "What a puny creature, not even able to withstand a minute of fighting." My legs no longer supported me and I crumpled to the floor as if I never once used my legs. "Its seemed the other two whores have escaped but they won't be fast enough to have gone far. As for you, I'll make sure you suffer for losing my meal." Without a warning he stood above me and began carving flesh. Strip after strip, graceful as a butcher with countless years of experience. The wailing and screaming erupted and enveloped any sense of hearing I had. being in a state of daze, I hadn't realized that my vocal cords had collapsed and nothing but rasping breath was escaping out of my mouth.

Looking up the creature was eating each strip of flesh like it was some sort of delicacy. Each piece only broadening that horrific smile and mouth full of human teeth. Clumps of flesh hung between its teeth and blood covered its hand as I could do absolutely nothing but watch. I tried to claw and drag myself away and it only served to annoy the creature as it looked down upon me.

Managing to begin crawling, any hope of escape left quickly vanished as four stakes pierced both my arms and calves. The pain was unbearable, and moving at all was impossible, I began to cry. Fuck me, why did i have to live through so much just for my life to be ended by this, this thing.

Hatred and fear was the only thing I could feel, the only thing left. I was alone and would die that way. Owlso the spoke, "You are not alone, we shall be together at least even in death." The pain began to lessen but then began the howling and whimpering of a wolf. Obsidian began to crack and the sounds of both our cries were a common delicacy for this monster.

"That's it, I love the taste of flesh with screams to drink and savor after every swallow." It was then that the world became void of color, light and feel. Suddenly a voice that sounded like an chorus of many spoke, "Child of tortured flesh and cursed bone, accept me and I shall grant you the power to dominate and slaughter. For strength is something you must be willing achieve, even if it means forsaking everything, now give me something that is worthy of such power."

I couldn't breathe much less think as the creature drove one last steak through my chest and the the pain along with my screaming went silent. With the last of my conscious thought I reached out and responded, "Please don't let me die; I offer you my heart in return."

"The terms of our accord are accepted, I grant your the blessing of Demon lords Candidate. Now rise and swallow the skies, become the billowing smoke that will choke the breath out of undeserving creatures. And shall you falter in your resolve, I will claim that which you are soul pacted with." The Chorus began to fade and as the smile of whatever this thing was became imprinted upon my mind.

*Thump* *Thump* *Thump* *Thump*

The four stakes began to slide out from my body one by one catching the creature by surprise. "Your still not dead? bah, fresh meat is best but this is becoming tedious. Die you insignificant insect." Before it could lunge, the world froze and time fell silent. My body rose involuntarily, and with renewed vigor I took in the scene around me. "I can't believe this is real, but even still, how am going to kill this bastard." As I thought about my weapon it flew towards me pommel first. That's something new but I definitely have to try as least killing this fucker. With a diagonal slash the creature should have been cut in two, but nothing happened. Or to say the least, nothing was happening, but for the first time I had noticed that the world was utterly silent. My body once again began to burn, pain spiked and everything from my armor to my weapons seemed far to much to wield. I was too drained of every resource to hold myself up and dropped like stone. The sounds nature once again flooded my eardrums along with fading footsteps. This is it, I've lost and can't move anymore. At least the thing won't be able to say I didn't fight back. Light faded once again I had finally been rewarded with sleep.

My eyes shot open and the blinding lights of a building interior flowed with mana. Where the hell am I? looking around the room i quickly spotted Prim asleep hunched over the plain cot I was laid in. My body wrapped in bandages and ached like hell.

Noticing my stirring, Prim was woken and groggily said, "You're finally awake, I thought you weren't gonna make it for a little while." "Glad to know your full of faith for me," I responded. "It seems you were able to get help and rescue me huh. Adjusting her position to sit up, Prim said, "No, I came back to check on you after realizing any help would be too far away, and when I got back to you there was blood everywhere but that thing was gone." she responded. "It was gone!?" I quickly said, stunned. "Yeah, I was glad I did come back in time to save you though. But what happened out there?" I told Prim that I got a lucky shot in after sustaining a ton of injuries and blacking out before getting to see what happened either. "It must have ran after that, or maybe someone else got there before I did. Either way it's been about 4 days and it has yet to return so the guild has decided to hand us the reward." I moved the cover off of me and sat up, "Sweet, at least my pain isn't worthless. It's time to head home."
