For this third chapter, there will be a new turn.
"We could all die and fail so terribly at coping that it makes matters worse."
We could act as people have acted in some previous cases.
Victim Blaming: Shunning the sick and their families. Finding any social distinction to cast unfounded inferences and disparaging life style charges.
Bias Based Access and Support: Racism. Elite-ism. Xenophobia. Anything to make other people less deserving. Overt challenges when shopping. Overt challenges when renting rooms or housing.
Community clustering against people. Overt authoritarian transport for some people, while others can self-isolate in their homes.
Hoarding: Securing medicines locally. Preparing for years, instead of having enough for the length of quarantine or social distance self-isolation.
Regional Tensions: Fearing visitors or returning travelers. Making a culture of 'Clamp Down". Perceiving sad, tired, and tense travelers and a threat.
Extremely Ill Considered Crowding: Whether situational or discretionary, social crowds should be avoided. The information age could be a help for this.
Profiteering and Extreme Conservation: Taking advantage of a hot market. Making token actions with maximum visibility. Holding back resources and expense. "That would hurt my numbers." A phrase used by corporate leaders. "We should not make pay equal, that would hurt our numbers." "We should not afford all workers the same protections and benefits as us. That would hurt our numbers." "We cannot do that this fiscal quarter. That might hurt my numbers."
Collapse of Social Order: Riots. Wars.
The odds of this killing us all are really, really, very small. We might hope that destructive behavior does not contribute.
