Sometimes I would drive to work and whisk under a canopy of large trees that shadowed the road on both sides.
Creating temporary tunnels of leaves. I let myself fall into a rest of thought, and believed that the trees had found balance with the cars on the road.
A few days later, I was behind a large tall truck on the same road. The trailer top of the truck tore off leaves and branch ends as it sped.
That balance I thought existed, was not there. The trees were being trimmed into a canopy above the road by a larger object.
It had an impact on my worldview.
Recently, a fast smallish rock sped by planet Earth. We did not get much advance warning. It was behind the sun.
It was fast and might have cause human civilization to collapse (if it hit an unfortunate place). Who really knows? It could have been worse.
I passed Earth closer than the lunar orbit.
There are laws of physics that guide such objects. There is a balance. None of that would have stopped that fast rock from smacking the Earth.
I can only suggest that we get a little more proactive in tracking things like that. Something to support the 'Earth Defense Initiative'.
Unless we are lucky, ignorance is not bliss.
