When they grabbed his arm it felt cold, ice cold. There was no emotion shown behind the men even though they just killed the old couple.
"What are you doing," He lowered his voice. "Who are, or what are you?"
"Shut your mouth," One of them said as they started to crinkle their nose, "what's that putrid odour?"
Their eyes dart around themselves attempting to pinpoint where it's coming from, their eyes meet up with Abrils. Their body starts to fade into transparent darkness, "Don't open the door." They said.
"What are you implying." He questioned, reaching a hand out to the dark figure but they didn't react, all they did was turn away and walk into the forest leaving Abril behind.
His body shot up, he was back in the underway. He glanced over next to himself, the old duo was still alive, they were still next to him. 'Shit, what was that?' He'd wonder.
The old man who stood next to him walked forward then turned and stood face to face with Abril.
"Hey kid you okay?" The old man asked as he placed a hand on top of Abril's shoulder. "Your eyes look like they're about to pop out of your head do you need to sit down for a sec?"
His mouth struggled to speak, "The door," He babbled, "don't open... don't open the door."
"It's either up there or out there, which one?"
He looked the old man in the eye, "You're, you're senseless if you go, go either way you'll...die," He added, "let's just stay in here."
"You little-"
His wife cut him off by declaring that he'll get them killed if he's any louder. His breath was starting to speed up coming out in fast huffs and puffs.
"Fuck this shit!" He yelled before leaving and slamming the door behind himself, shortly after there were blood-curdling screams coming from outside the door.
The wife put her arms around Abril slowly pulling him back, her skin was pale and cold. Her body was obviously shaking from terror, wet droplets of water coated the back of his neck. He looked up at her, tears were streaming down her face.
"I'll go out," He said, "I believe I'm the reason they're here." He slowly and gently pulled down her arms. "Thank you for the hot chocolate it was genuinely good."
Before he left out the door he handed the woman a coin, "Before I go take this, put it in your front pocket." she did so the coin was thick and heavy weighing down her shirt.
Even though she couldn't make out any words her eyes said it all, "Don't cry, we'll meet again I promise." He told her.
He opened the door and ran out shutting it behind himself, he stopped and put his hands up.
They didn't say anything just stared at him. An uneasy feeling swept over him as he began to fiddle with his feet.
One of them spoke up, "Your name is Abril right?" he started to inch closer to him slowly. "Anyone else in there with you?"
"Was just that old man, no one else." He said lowering his hands, "Why does that matter?"
"No reason. We'll have to take your word for it, might be stupid yes but we don't have that much time left to spare.
