The soft wind slowly blew a kiss to my face, a breeze so gentle and caring. I stood there in the field, breathing in the fresh air, grazing my fingertips along the pointy grass. The sun showed a spectacular orange tint, as it started to set. This was the only place I felt safe, felt loved. The birds chirped endlessly, singing songs to the one daily audience. Looking up at the tree I smiled and began to walk back to my house. Normally my heart would feel lonely, shy, maybe even depressed but today was a good day. A day where nothing could stop my joyful heart. I knew she was looking down at me, my mother, wherever she was, she was surely looking down smiling at her now 17-year-old daughter. Practically skipping to the creaky old porch, I swung open the door and was greeted by, well my life.
"Lizzy, what are you doing outside, getting all dirty and..."
"What a mess!" My grandma Lop looked at me up and down with great disgust, peeling green leaves out of my once decent long red hair. Taking a deep breath, I was not letting her, yet again ruin this day. Huffing, I swiftly walked passed her and ran up the spiral stairs, shutting the door behind me.
"Young lady, you get down here right away! You hear!"
I smiled at the sound of muffled words and hummed along to my now blasting music. All around me were bright pink walls, children books, and numerous stuffed dogs. My room was pretty much a museum, showing off sweet little Lizzy's golden days of five years old. For whatever reason, my grandma Lop would forbid me to update my utterly disgusting room. Always telling me, and I quote, "There is no need for new things when your old things are fine as rain" Ha, ya just like our front porch is fine rotting away in the sun, no need to build a new one when you fall through. I thought. Knowing her, I wasn't expecting any gifts for turning 17 today, just like I wasn't expecting a knock on the door.
"Sweetpea, may I come in?"
"Ya, whatever."
The door opened as I pulled my earbuds out and threw them on the bed. Lop look surprisingly calm, not the normal 'do this, do that attitude.'
"Honey, I know that sometimes I am a little--"
"Overbearing", I said snorting.
She looked at me, with her blue eyes, squinting hard, and blew a breath. Uh oh, I know where this is going, I thought. Some serious conversation is on its way out of the station.
"Lizzy, now that you're getting older, I think it's time to spread your wings and try something new. Your at the age where you need to meet new people, do new things. You've been at Spring High for what, 3 years now, and you're still the quiet, shy, little Lizzy." She began looking at me again intensely, I resisted the urge to scoot away.
"Time and time again, I see you outside alone, no friends, no fun."
Gosh, thank you so much for making me feel 100 times better! Maybe it's because no one likes me, maybe its because everyone thinks I am freak, maybe it's because I have an overprotective grandma who doesn't let me grow up and be me! I thought as I saw her forming her next words carefully.
"You are going to a boarding school, five hours from here, one for special talents." She blurted out. Her hand began to shake and I was worried she would tick three times and explode. My mouth popped open like a nutcracker, and I tried to process this new information. However, before I could squeak a word she began blubbering on.
"You are such a special girl Liz. I know I don't show it enough but I really do care. Whatever I do, it's in your best interest. Summer is ending fast, and the boarding school asked for you specifically. It starts in less than a week."
Getting her shaky hands back in control, she reached into her pocket and brought out the most beautiful necklace! Shaped like fire, it seems to come alive in the light, growing with each movement and dangle.
"Uh, my...wow!" I stuttered. She grabbed my hand, and gently placed it there. Looking at it closer, I could tell it was well made and probably very expensive.
"Lop, you didn't have to--this is--well this is so kind of you!" She smiled, making her wrinkles form around her eyes, and kissed my forehead. Patting my knee she walked off and began to speak.
"You better get some rest now, tomorrow is a big day, you'll see." Before she closed the door she turned around and smiled once more. Uh, where is my grandma Lop, and who is this imposter. I thought.
"Happy birthday, sweet pea!"
When the door closed all I could think about was how this day went from pretty good to utterly crazy and why in the world would this school ask for me specifically.
....more coming soon. What do u think so far?
