Chereads / A Myriad of Stars / Chapter 2 - Squadron? Weapon?

Chapter 2 - Squadron? Weapon?

Cameron woke up, not in a cell, but in a daze on the street. He had been knocked unconscious for a short period of time and had a banging headache.

Then a man stepped into the forcefield. He was tall with heavy muscles and a bearded face that was neatly trimmed. He was wearing very fine uniform and had a steely glint in his eyes.

"You're not from around here" He growled

"No" Cameron replied

"Well, do you know what happens to criminals around here?"

"No, what?"

"They're sent to a special unit in the army, the most dangerous one and they serve until they have ended their sentence or died."

Cameron's face turned pale. He could die. But he had only robbed a small store. Punishments were a lot more extreme here than in his village.

"You will serve a year in the special unit and I hope you don't die. I shall be the captain of the squadron you are in."

Then Cameron was teleported to a different area, where there were lines of people signing up for the military presumably.

Cameron was led away from the rest to a place with no queue and was asked for his name and Star Power and its level. He was unsure of what to say and said.

"Cameron Smith. Wind, Beginner"

This was because he wanted to get better at wind before attempting Time, which he was sure was much harder.

He was then lead towards the forest where one could make out the faint outlines of a camp, so dark and quiet that it was basically invisible to everyone around.

Cameron approached the eerie camp and was greeted by a thick burly man who looked terrifying.

He walked up to him and was told to follow via a grunt. He followed him to a tent, lay down and slept.

...

Bang Bang Bang

Cameron heard a crashing sound outside and a roll call starting. He hurried out of bed and scrambled to get in line with the others.

"Welcome to the military's finest unit, also the most dangerous. I am Captain Shepherd. We have provided all the necessary equipment for you. You may be asking what unit you are in the 'Nightmare' unit. Here we do everything from assassination to charging the frontlines, but whatever we do, we are like a nightmare to our enemies, hence our name. Any questions?" Said Captain Shepherd.

...

"No, none. That's good. Let's get to work boys!" He shouted "Now go get your equipment in the tent that I'm pointing at!"

Everyone looked over at a seemingly plain tent but inside they all guessed it was an armoury with all sorts of weapons.

They all wondered over, a wave of excitement spreading over the crowd of people. They all waited outside the tent, ready to be told to go in.

"Wait, wait, wait" Captain Shepherd said "I still have to put you in your squadrons! Ok I'll call out your names and you go to the squadron you are assigned to."

He started to read out the list going from cavalry to archers, to assassins, to spies and then to infantry and Cameron's name was called out in the infantry squadron.

As everyone had now arranged into their squadrons and were ready to enter the armoury tent.

"Ok, we are going to do this in a fashionable order. Cavalry first" shouted the captain

The cavalry people entered the armoury while the rest waited outside for around fifteen minutes.

Then the squadron came out looking magnificent with their polished magically reinforced iron armour and their enchanted lances and sabres. Then they where taken to get their steeds.

The archers then waltzed in wanting the fancy armour and enchanted weapons and again, everyone waited fifteen minutes.

This time the came out with polished leather armour and enchanted bows with a never ending quiver each. They then went off to practise their bows and get used to them.

Next went the assassins and then the spies. Finally the infantry squadron was ready. Cameron walked in, ecstatic to see what was inside the tent. He walked up to the door and thrust it open in one smooth movement. Then he entered.

The tent was stocked full of weapons and the squadron was shown over to the infantry equipment. Once they had walked over to the equipment they where separated into abilities. Their was fire, water, forcefield, and telekinesis, but no wind. Cameron went up to the captain and asked him where wind was.

"You are special, I can tell, so we have given you a special infantry weapon for your ability."

Replied the captain before handing him a strange spear like object.

"This is a War Scythe, it is perfect for a wind user like you but is difficult to learn. As you are also special, we have given you a different type of weapon from everyone else."

Cameron started to get excited, did he have a mystical weapon of infinite strength that was only given to the strongest warriors.

"Yours is not enchanted" The captain said bluntly

"What" Cameron said, "You must have made a mistake, I need an enchanted weapon!"

"Cameron Cameron, I think you have misunderstood. This is not enchanted. It is sealed. It holds great power but it has been sealed apart from basic enchants like anti-rust and instant sharpening. You need to unlock its potential by yourself as only you can do it. You can even check it in you Star Profile."

"Ok" replied Cameron

Asphodite, can you open my Star Profile

"Of course" Asphodite replied

"Why is it called 'Myriad Of Stars'?" Cameron questioned

"It's because this is the weapon of King Frank II, the ruler who found the stars and their power, so that is why it is named like this. It has survived countless battles, so treat it well."

Captain Shepherd then called

"Time to go boys, we've got to practise, am I right!"

Everyone got up with a cheer, fully equipped with armour and everything and followed the captain.

Cameron put his war scythe in its scabbard on his back and ran up to the captain asking about his armour.

"You don't need any armour. You'll manage with that weapon." He said

Cameron stopped, aghast, but carried on following the captain, hoping that he would only need the war scythe.

The squadron stopped at a field full of dummies.

"Now it is time to teach all of you some skills, now separate into abilities and meet your instructor!"

Everyone then split up into groups of abilities and were greeted by instructors unlike Cameron, who was greeted by a book. The book was in an old red cover, which was worn out through time and it looked quite strange.

'King Frank II's War Scythe Training and Skills manual'

So Cameron did what he had to, he sat down on the field and read. He read until the training session was over and everyone was covered in sweat from swinging weapons, everyone except him.

Cameron has been reading the book and was immersed in it. The skills and training listed in the book were very extreme and he wasn't sure if he could do them, but he had to try.

As everyone walked back to have a shower, Cameron was still reading the book.

He read it through dinner and through the night and when morning came Cameron had finished the book. He had understood the basic concepts of the skills but was more focused on the training elements.

As everyone marched down from breakfast to the training field to practise with their new weapons, Cameron felt like he could do some of the training and get used to the weapon.

He got up, greeted his fellow soldiers, took out his weapon and got ready to train till he dropped, or the session ended.
