"This is the day that I have been waiting for my entire life!" He says as he starts to get dressed. One of the many mornings in a normal person's life, but for him, it was different everything suddenly become brighter and livelier. The sun was shining brightly, the birds where chirping ear-pleasing melodies and he was getting ready to graduate from his twelve-year life commitment to the education system. This would be the reality for most students graduating from high school but not for the handsome, cold-hearted Jarick. This is, in fact, his view.
"Just another day of my life…" he says as he puts on the same ordinary uniform, he wears every day.
Jarick lives in a small town just outside Perth Western Australia, he has lived there since he was quite young. He is a handsome tall and built young man with dark brown hair and emerald green eyes. He lives with his mom who works as a manager for a small and unfamiliar restaurant in town. His dad you might ask, well he does not know where his dad is the only thing, he knows is that his mom divorced his dad a long time ago. You could say that he has had an okay upbringing apart from the whole divorce thing. He himself has a bit of a bad personality. He was a well-mannered and positive young boy before his mom and dad divorced, but after they divorced, he never smiled again and became cold as ice. He is straight forward, righteous and still well-mannered but in a different way.
Two years ago, when he was in grade 11, he got caught up in the wrong group of people, one lively and sunny afternoon he came home with bruises and cuts all over his face, that was the moment his personality worsened. He started to care less and less for people and their emotions, he only cared about his mom and since then he has never had friends again. Now at the school, he is about to graduate from he is known as a world-class jerk. People started to fear him for roomers going around and everything went bad. That is when he built his last wall around his hart, locked off to the rest of the world.
"Mom I am off." he says as he takes a bite of toast from a plate on the dining table and walks off.
"Okay honey, enjoy! I will see you later." She rushes her last few words as she hears the door close.
As he walks to school, he turns to his thoughts- Ugh! Why must my mom make such a big deal out of this? It is not like I am dying. It is just a minor change in my life. I already told her. I need to figure out what is going to be my next step. I think I should just find a job and start from there, but my mom would probably want me to go to university. I already applied to three universities and two jobs. The jobs I applied for and the university major I applied for all have the same kay idea of what I want to pursue; technology. – He slowly disappears from his thoughts because when he arrived at school all he could see was white. Everything was too bright for his liking; all the people and they're cheerful and hopeful smiles were all just annoying.
He could only hear all the voices around him; "What a wonderful day it is to graduate, Is the weather not perfect for a graduation, I cannot believe we are already at the end, I cannot wait to go to university."
He was so creeped out that he just walked straight through the crowd and into the school building. – all these people and their happiness, I mean it is just graduating. Your life means nothing in adult society right after you get that scroll in your hand and they send you off. Nothing, you have nothing, and you are nothing, nothing. How can you be happy about that? Focus on how to make a name for yourself in the adult world. Seriously. Do not come running back to your friends, family and the school because you failed. It is all your fault if everything backfires. –
Back in reality, it was nearly the end of the graduation ceremony and all the people that were all smiles turned into crying monsters; " I am going to miss you guys, it went by so quick, I wish I could turn back time, I am going to miss this school and the teachers, I had such a great time here." The sight of this miserable scene made him want to vomit, but luckily, he sees his mom in the distance with a letter in her hand.
As he walks towards her, he faces lightens up and she waves at him.
"Son, sorry I am late I got stuck at work." She says as he finally reached the gate Infront of his school where most parents are waiting for their children to come.
"No problem it was not a big deal anyway." He says with no expression on his face. It is like a natural face with no expression except he had a cold and stern feel and look to it.
"Do not say that." She says with a disappointed face. "Oh! I almost forgot this came in the mail for you, it is probably from the university." She stares blankly at him, as she hands the letter to him, waiting for his reaction.
"Thank you." No response, he opens the letter. "I got accepted…" He says with an expressionless face.
"Oh, that is good are you not excited" She waited in anticipation?
"It is no big deal, I expected as much." He says as he walks off. For a minute his mom spaces out and realises that he already went around the corner. Quickly, she jogged after him and off they went home.
Once they arrived home him mom immediately ran off to the kitchen to make his favourite dishes. Yes, believe it or not, but he does have favourite food and hobbies. Despite his lousy personality he is a kind-hearted guy on the inside, he only locked his hart away because of the past.
Back in the small kitchen, his mom's sweating like crazy from all the hard work she puts into making his favourite dishes. Their kitchen is a small, contemporary and casual area that is very homey, it is all white with dashes of yellow, orange and green.
In his room Jarick was busy reading the letter he received from the university and he is starting to make moving plans because the university he applied for is in the city; Perth. Meanwhile, he got a text message.
– Who could it be at this hour? –
He checks his phone; it was one of his friends back in the day. The text message says; "Hey, I saw you at school today. As cold as ever, anyway, we were wondering if you were up for some fun." He stares at his phone with flaming red eyes.
-It is him why would that bastard be texting me, seriously-
Jarick decides to just ignore the text, but he is so angry and frustrated at this guy.
"Honey, come and eat!" She yells from downstairs
She hears no response from him only footsteps, this is normal as for him not to respond because he never yells. His own mother has never heard him yell except when he was little or very frustrated.
She sees him coming down the stairs. "Come sit and let's eat, I made all your favourite dishes."
He replies with a simple; "Thanks" and nods. As he sits down in their dining room. He takes a bite of the food and nothing, no response; "…"
For a while they sit in silence when his mom realises that he must move and they need to plan; "So, have you decided where you are going to live when you are in Perth?"
He stares at her blankly and replies; "Not sure, I might stay here and drive every day."
His mom sits in shock her son, that has everything planned out had no clue. She goes into a ramble; "No that is not possible the fuel is going to cost too much, you will arrive home late which means working late into the night and getting up early in the morning again. No that will not do."
He looks at her blankly, but his tone of voice is frustrated; "Okay! I will decide; I only got the letter today. Seriously. I was anyway planning on leaving, finding a job and an apartment. I am gone take a shower." He removes himself from the situation, when he got to the stairs he looked back and saw his moms sadden face and decides to sit back down after all she made him all his favourite dishes; "Sorry, it is just that I am a bit stressed out." She nods and continues eating for a while she talks about her day and what she got up too.
She lifted her head and asked him; "How was your day, son?"
He looks at her. Finish chewing the food he has in his mouth and says; "It was alright."
She stares at him blankly and thought to herself 'I should not have expected much of a response and I should not have asked him.' After they ate and dished up the dishes, he went upstairs to take a shower and his mom went to her room to go and read her book. Just as he was about to go take a shower he got another message from the same guy; "Come on man, we miss you. How long are you going to cry about the past, it is all done and dusted." Once again, he just ignores the text. He was so angry he decided to take a cold shower.
Downstairs his mom can hear his hard footsteps and him slamming everything close. I was not until late in the evening when things started to go quiet. His mom went to bed early because she must go to work early the next morning and he went to bed about an hour after her.
Just when midnight hit Jarick started to toss and turn in his sleep, making all these moaning sounds and talking in his sleep.
"No! Dad, mom does not take me away I want to stay with dad. Why do I have to leave when you two had a fight."
"Come on darling, this is for the best."
"Goodbye son…"
No!
He awakes from his dream in a state of trauma, he was breathing heavy and fast, his eyes as wide as they can be. He goes downstairs to go and get a cup of water and some fresh air. He mumbles to himself; "That dream again?" When he returns to his room, he is completely stable and calm again, he decides to go back to bed.
About for weeks have passed and Jarick is ready to say goodbye to his mom and move to Perth where he will attend university. That entire morning his mom was constantly reciting happy and fun memories from the past. She also gave him a hug every fifteen minutes and said that it was the hugs she will be unable to give him when he is away.
Jaricks' mom with tears in her eyes; "Good bey, darling. Take good care of yourself, eat enough, get enough sleep, be safe and hope you make some new friends." Tears streaming like a waterfall down her face.
He hands her a tissue; "Thank you mom, I will come and visit you once I get a break."
She takes the tissue; gives him the biggest embrace she has ever given him and gives him a big fat kiss on the cheek. He does the same except for the kiss he only gives her a long and loving hug. After a few minutes of saying his goodbyes to his mom, he loaded up his last bag in the car of the boot and off he went to meet the person that will change his life forever.
