Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 <How the Mafia Came to Be>

In Combat City, the Mafia was the most powerful existence in town. In fact, when the Mafia wanted to do something, everyone had to agree. One old saying once said "If you want to gain soft power, join the government. If you want to gain hard power, join the Mafia."

The reason why the Mafia was so feared stemmed from the fact that besides the Mafia, most of the people were just ordinary civilians. Their special abilities had nothing to do with combat, but with jobs like accounting or passions like cooking, mending, etc. Combat abilities by themselves were rare, and getting an actually good one was even harder. The result was that all of the people who had combat prowess were sent off to fight in remote locations against monsters and aliens, defending the front lines of the virtual world against other planets who had a desire to gain more land for their planet.

While the heroic efforts of the top fighters in the country meant that humanity could sleep sound at night, it also meant that nobody was there to protect humans from one another. Heinous crimes ranging from rape to murder plagued the land, and the creators who created this world for their own amusement were too lazy to do anything about it. (Instead, they sat back and relaxed in a distant part of heaven.)

However, most of those crimes were committed by solo or duo groups that (mostly) had no connection to each other. Criminals would often fight against one another for the same thing, often resulting in deaths. By the time mankind celebrated the third year anniversary of the virtual world, most of the crimes like burglary against civilians stopped.

The reasons for this drastic change in crime was because of a multitude of reasons. First and foremost, criminals teamed up. Realizing that crime was more inefficient alone than in a gang, many criminals decided to form groups to better protect themselves. Meanwhile, most of the civilians had died already, and when they respawned, they lost all of their money and abilities. In the end, the people who hadn't died were the people who had money. In the past, the easiest way to make money was just to loot civilians. It was an easy way to make money and gain slaves. However, after the creators of the virtual world made slavery a punishment bannable, and most of the population had lost all their money, using civilians as a cash cow wasn't a viable method anymore for the time that was needed. The other three options were looting the creators of the game (all of the creators were divine beings), looting the hunters/cultivators defending humanity (which would make the criminals even more hated than they already are), or looting other criminals. When compared to the other options, looting other criminals seemed like the obvious choice. In the end, gangs fought over territory and money in a proxy war that resulted in the wipe out of most criminals. Because if civilians die to other humans, they can re spawn in the world. If combat-type humans, people who committed crimes, or any others who were involved in the crime business used up their ten lives, they would die.

However, there was one crime gang still remaining. It's name was called the Business. Unlike other gangs, where all of the members focused specifically on only three things (stealing, sex and slaves), the Business disregarded these three things in favor of steady streams of income like assassinations and grocery stores. And just like its name, the Business gang ran their operations like a business, complete with customer service, refunds, and even TV ads. And since their crimes weren't as heinous as the other gangs, the creators didn't care about them that much. Soon, they dominated the crime scene and slowly expanded to other areas such as human trafficking and prostitution. After 1 year of existence, the gang changed their name to the "Mafia" to celebrate over 10000 members worldwide. Did people like the Mafia? No. Most citizens still hated the Mafia, as they still commuted horrible crimes, though not as much as the other gangs. But compared to the other gangs, the Mafia was the lesser of two evils. Plus, most citizens used the Mafia's services at one time or another, even if they didn't want to admit it.

Today, Teacher Wang was the one who called the Mafia for an assassination.
