I wasn't upset at him I just wanted to know the truth. I stayed in the office till I could calm down. Then I went back to our quarters for lunch and to talk to Lae. I hoped he would come back to the office with me.
When I got there no one was here but Jake. I picked the little pug up and sat with him on my lap. Where could they be.
Soon Daisy came in with our lunches. She placed the food on the table and the bowl of stew for Jake on the floor.
'Can you tell Lae the food is ready?' She said taking Jake to his bowl.
"Do you know were he is at? We had a heated discussion a little while ago. I thought he came back here." I said.
'If he was upset he probably went for a walk. Don't worry he does this sometimes. He will come back later. Eat your lunch.' She sounded like a mother now not a 12 year old girl.
I ate and returned to the office to meet with Charlie and the female guards. The first four I was impressed with them and their answers they gave to my question. I informed them they would be getting 100 jewels more each month. How ever they would now work three day on dungeon duty one day off then one day gate duty then two days off. They were all ok with this.
Then came my talk with Jillian.
"Please have a seat. As you may know I am talking to all staff of Grey Castle and looking over their performance. Jillian I know we have been friends since we were little. I also know six months ago when you found out the King was going to give me the Job of running this prison you asked your father to send you here so we could be close.
However I have a duty to this country to run this prison right so I ask you now. Are you a good guard here?"
She smiled, "Yes, I work hard and will always make you proud."
I frown. "It says here that you have missed many shifts?"
"That is because the girls would traded shifts with me. They would not show up for my shift. Then they would lie and say we never switched. They do not like that I am friends with you." She said.
"Ok it also says here that Charles has shown you many times how to complete the necessary paperwork for your shifts. You are a very smart person why?"
"I don't know why I mess it up. He just is not good at explaining it. If you explain it I know I can get it." She is a little panicky now.
"Last it says that you let a prisoner out and she almost escaped."
"She tricked me. She seemed nice and just wanted to see the sun then she hit me and ran. The gate guards caught her and all was better then."
"I'm sorry to say that I am sending you back to your father." I hand her a sealed letter. "Here are you new orders, report to the capital in two days."
"This is not fair, I know it's that little bit**s fault. He doesn't like we are friends and wants to get rid of me. See he even got the commander of the guards on his side. I told you that you should not trust him."
"This has nothing to do with Lae. You know I take my job seriously and you did not. I can't have people like that here. Pack your things and leave.
She ran out crying. I felt bad but had to do what was best for the prison.
"That got scary." Charles said.
"Yes, it did. We will start going over the male guards in two days. I want to read over them and then I'll meet with you about them. Keep in mind the good ones and the ones we need to weed out. I will also need you to move one over to the women's side till we hire a new female."
After he left I grabbed the personal files and headed back to my quarters. I placed the files in my desk and locked it.
Lae was not back. I went to the front gate and asked if he had come through there. They said yes and that he headed for the stables.
There was two stable men working and when I asked If a man with a long black braid came through they said yes.
"He asked for a horse to do some errands for you. Did we do wrong?" One asked.
"No, I was checking if he did as I asked. Could you saddle my horse for me."
I road into town slowly looking for any sign of Lae. I soon spotted a lonely horse in a field as I got closer I see two men running away fast. The horse was in deed one from Gray Castle but no rider then I seen something move in the tall grass. I pull both horses in that direction Then I see a man beat almost to death. It was Lae and my heart stopped.
I drop the reins and run over to him. "Hang on, you will be all right, just hang on." I carry him over and lay him across the saddle. I mount mine and lead the horses back to the Castle.
My heart is beating so fast I thought I would be the one to die. As I get close I yell for a guard to get the healer right away and to bring a stretcher.
I get down then ease him off the horse. Another guard takes the horse back to the stable.
When the stretcher comes two servants carry him back to my room followed by both the Castle healers.
They worked for hours and would not let me or Daisy in the room.
I sat and held her. 'I hear him cry in pain' She said as she buried her head in my chest. She soon fell a sleep so I carried her to bed.
I worked all night on the files I have. I opened both healers files. They are really good at their jobs. If they save him they are getting raises.
Around midnight they both came out.
"He is out of danger now. He was beaten really bad. He has three cracked ribs and a broken leg bone. We have wrapped his ribs tight do not undo the bandage. His leg we will cast tomorrow when the swelling goes down. Right now it's in a splint. He will be really sore from all the bruising and cuts. Here is medication to give him. We will have some bread and wine sent up. Have him take it with both. It's best if he can just sleep. I'll also have a maid bring a bed chamber pot for him to use. No getting out of bed."
