After the Yew Brothers leave, leaving my husband looking tired and irritated, my phone rings. I look down at my phone and sigh before picking it up. "Hello Gorgeous!" said my dad enthusiastically.
"You only call me gorgeous when you need help from Jude and I," I replied. "Do you want me to put you on speaker, daddy?" I asked him as Jude dries his hands off with a towel as he approaches me with a raised brow.
"Yes, put me on speaker Princess, thank you," said my dad. I press the speaker button.
"Hello father," replies Jude with a smirk.
"Hello son," my dad replies. "I'm going to have to cut to the chase since well...I'm being followed."
My husband and I give each other a look of surprise. "I'd never thought you'd be the one to ever get sloppy, father," Jude boldly replies. Even though I huff in disapproval, I smile inside.
It shouldn't surprise me when my husband acts boldly but it always does. Even when I met him the first time...and the secret dates I had with him, Jude always seemed too put together to act boldly.
"Oh, I've lost them for now, kid. I just know I don't have long." My dad's morose tone brings me back to the present.
"What happened, daddy?" I ask, croaking out the question. Do I really want to know? Do I want a glimpse at yet another side of my father I can't take back?
Jude looks at me for one moment before saying, "Father, I'll have to put you on hold for a moment." Jude doesn't wait for my father's answer. Instead, he looks at me. "Love, you can leave the room if you want. I'd understand if you don't want to know about father's dealings."
True, I don't. However, this may be the mafia in me talking, but unless they betray you, you back your family up. Even if that means you learn things about them you'd rather forget.
Which is why my dad called me instead of Jude. He wants me in on this conversation, like it or not. "It's alright, I'm ready to hear it."
Jude releases the hold. When he does he says, "Sorry, we had an unexpected visitor but we're ready to hear you now father."
"Son...Gorgeous..." That's what my dad softly said before we heard gunfire on his end. "Gorgeous, I want you to bring Jude to our favorite spot. I've hidden what I've acquired there."
"Daddy?" I ask him over the phone before his line cuts off.
Jude pulls me in for a hug and I let him. "Well, let's get out of the office for a bit, love. It sounds like the perfect time for it, hmm?"
