With Master Horaces raised hands, the light seemed to stretch along the circle, and a hum came about when the last of the circle was lit up. The other teachers, whose faces were hidden under the robes, joined in and together they joined their power to the circle causing its glow to brighten.
John, standing in the middle of the bright circle, seemed to have entered a trance of sorts. His body swaying this way and that as if his body was being pulled in multiple directions.
"Hold fast!" one of the teachers yelled, his voice strained from the effort of powering the circle. "We must prevent any intruders from interfering with the summons."
"No shit! Why do you think we brought so many high level mages for one simple familiar summoning? Of course the demon king would send his demonic plane allies to interfere, so as to prevent the hero from getting stronger." an older woman's voice berated the first speaker. "So stop your narration and put some more effort into the defensive wards!"
That soon shut him up, and not a moment to soon as three portal opened in front of John. The biggest one looked like it was a direct portal to the sun as a bright light was shining through the crystalline looking portal, while the other had a fiery edge with a wall of flames appearing inside of it.
The third one was causing the most concern, as just looking at it hurt my eyes, it just screamed wrong and the oily substance crawling out of the portal did not help. The very sky seemed to dim at its appearance and the ground beneath my feet began to tremble almost in fear.
As soon as the black portal appeared, Master horace and the rest of the teachers sent a combined bundle of energy hurling toward it. However, before it could close the portal, a claw covered in the oily substance appeared and grabbed it.
Seeing the potental danger and not holding back, Master Horace grit his teeth and living up to his name as a master conjurer began simultaneously sending energy to the group while also beginning something else.
Sending a strange energy to his finger, it began to glow with an inner might as he channeled it and began writing in the air using the energy by drawing a complex circle with multiple symbols in the center and around it. He used quick masterful strokes, and by the time he was done, the air surrounding him was covered in the strange arcane script that seemed to vibrate in power.
While Master horace was preparing, the arm of the creature began to make its way out of the portal bit by bit even with a group of teachers fighting against it. Soon a forehead then a head itself left the portal showing the demon in all its unholy glory, for that is the only way to describe it, showed its monstrous visage and smiled at John with pale sharp teeth.
John, however, was unresponsive and still in a trance which was a blessing considering the ghastly face staring at him not a few feet away.
Raising its oily arm it reached out to grab John but before its nails could get to him, a shout from behind caught its attention. Master Horace was ready and angry.
Shouting a strange word and flinging out his hands, the arcane script seemed to condense into a golden ball in front of his hands before with a strike of thunder the spell was released.
A golden bar of energy shot at the demon and impacted with a resounding bang, and causing the being to be flung back through the portal.
Without the demon interfering the other teachers were able to guide the bundle of energy toward sealing up the portal, which with its disappearance brought a calm once more to the world.
Master horace as well as the other teachers seemed to slump to the ground, with Horace even falling asleep from whatever he had done. The others rested and watched John, not worried about the other two portals which set my mind somewhat at ease.
Finally after another minute John's eyes opened and from the two other portals, three beings stepped out, and just as quickly as they had appeared the portal closed once its occupants left.
From the bigger light portal came a strange canine made up of light, as well as, a suit of animated walking armor, while from the fiery portal came an eagle made up of golden like flames.
All at once they took a bow, or whatever constituted as a bow in the dogs case.
"You must name them to bind yourself to them, and only then will they become your familiars." grunted one of the robed figures who removed their hood showing an older woman's face, and I recognized the voice as the one that had chastised another teacher.
He nodded to her in thanks and turned to the kneeling figure, first to the armor. "For you I name you talos after an ancient tale on earth." then he turned to the dog. "To you my fine canine I give you the name Brutus-" The dog who chased me and left me both physically and emotionally scared?! "Though I can not remember where it comes from, It is the only name that came to mind when seeing your strong and imposing figure." he turns from the mons- dog and looks to the fire eagle, "Rise Aetos"
Saying so a gentle soothing golden light flouts from Johns body and splits up into three to go into each spirit, while a similar different colored light flouts from each spirit to Johns already massive light ball before reentering him with a quick flash.
The older woman who I will later learn is the school summoning teacher Mistress Elyon speaks up once more. "The contract is now complete, now John please call them to rest in your body where they will stay unless called upon. Although all three are highly powerful spirits in their own right, the journey to this plane still took a lot of energy."
He nods and points at each one causing them to burst into particles and enter his body, yet the armor Talos did not and instead seemed to seep into his clothes turning it to a golden and white color.
Master Elyon explains seeing the confusion on John's face. "Talos is an item type elemental, and does not have a high intelligence to be a spirit, yet do not mistake it's ignorance for weakness as even as an initiate level being it can take a hit from a squire ranked enemy easily. This defense will only get stronger with time, now follow Master Horace to a place to help you break through as an initiate in the mage ranks while we help your friend find his own familiars."
Master Horace now awakened from his power nape, led John to a nearby building, but not before John gave me an encouraging thumbs up… I'm doomed.
As John left, so did the other teachers who removed their hoods and left me and Mistress Elyon alone, crap I'm double doomed!
"Ah, Mistress Elyon don't we need more teacher's for the familiar summoning?"
She looks up from concentrating on the circle and explains to me while also changing the circle here and there. "No, that was only for the Heroes summoning as we expected trouble and needed the man power to fight and protect the hero from harm while still in his infant stage. You on the other hand are just a simple student who is not even known to the demon king. So we will be doing a normal familiar summoning so I am getting rid of the unnecessary parts."
"Oh thank...gods, the fact that I am not on any powerful evil being's list is a breath of fresh air to me"
She looked at me strangely and finished up the circle, but I was being serious about the demon king thing as I have read plenty of books, and in most cases the bad guy forces the MC through tons of obstacles and sends wave after wave of enemy after the MC without rest.
This of course boosts the MC's power up by a bajillion because 'plot armor', but for me I like the peace and quiet, and instead enjoy the monotony of life while slowly getting stronger the long way round.
By the time I was done complaining about common story tropes, Mistress Elyon was finished with the summoning circle and she motioned me towards the center, and doing so the circle lit up.
I had no Idea what to expect as the only thing that John showed was a lack of expression, but what I experienced was simply breathtaking.
It was a strangely familiar dream of floating between two colors, on one side was complete darkness and on the other was a swirling world skyblue. However, I was not heading toward either and was instead heading to a point where they seemed to combine.
Before I could process what I was seeing, I noticed a figure in the distance collecting...something. But before I could take a closer look I felt my right hand burn, and the figure turned toward me as if they could sense me and threw two of that something stright into my face.
With that I feel a jolt and I awakened to find a swirling green portal in front of me, and out popped a ink blob and a tiny storm cloud.
I heard Mistress Elyon sigh in disappointment, so I turned to her for answers. "What's wrong with them, I didn't accidentally grind them into mush?"
She shook her head. "No, they are perfectly fine, it's just that for the first earthling mage I expected something different, but the mimics will be good for a conjurer such as yourself in the long run"
"Wait! They are going to turn into chests and eat me alive" I freaked as a curtain punishing and unforgiveing game had ingrained a cold message into my soul, DON'T TRUST TREASURE CHESTS.
*sniffle* all those lost souls.
I had to suppress a shiver as she gave me a strange look. "No although they can if you want, but the reason they are not highly regarded is because they are one of the lowest class of elemental and are a blank slate without any intelligence. They are item type elementals, but unlike say the heroes armor, they don't know anything, while Talos can defend and function without the hero directing it. For mimics, from their personality to their human form is created by the owner. The only good point is you don't have to upgrade the gear they transform into as they grow in strength with the master, which saves money on weapon and gear cost and upkeep."
I could only sigh, but a familiar is a familiar, plus as low on the strength pyramid as they were, they would still take me to apprentice rank, which would otherwise take me a few months to a year to reach.
"So what type are they, just to help with the name is all."
She squinted at them and seemed to see right through them with her hawk like gaze. "One is not surprisingly a shadow and wind hybrid, while the other is a storm elemental which is a variant of wind. That is surprising as a storm mage is rare a powerful ally to have, I would expect no less from the hero's companion."
I felt one of the veins in my forehead nearly pop, I swear if I hear one more person call me Johns companion I was going to go crazy. *grumble* "for the cloud I give the name Aella" who do you think introduced John to Greek myth? "and for the goth puddle I named you Nyx." Well if I get to create my own familiars they might as be women, I don't want to spend my apparently long long life with a dude's voice in my head.
Like John before me, a light left my body though instead of golden, it was a sky blue color. So to did a light leave the mimics bodies and join my own.
I felt something scan and sift through my memories and thoughts, though I was not surprised as I was warned before hand by mistress Elyon that this is the way that mimics learn, it was still a little creepy.
However, they seemed to be spending a lot of time around the more embarrassing part of my mind were I keep all of my-
"Master!"
"Master!"
Two voices squeaked in my head… oh boy.
