Chapter 9 - A Mage is born and made

All hell seemed to come loose at the sound of Alice's words. The black furred wolves that had surrounded us all attacked at once, not at all fearful of Alice's flames. Alice was not moved by the horrific sight as she continued to send blade after crescent blade of flame towards the wolves.

The three blades of flame she sent cut through the air, cutting up two more wolves, yet they were learning as the third one was dodged. The wolf that dodged seemed to laugh at her attempts, but was cut short by the burning sword that was suddenly piercing its skull.

It happened so fast that neither me nor John saw how she moved that distance so fast, it was as if she teleported. Simply taking a step back her figure seemed to blur and she was once again by us, acting as if she did not just do something totally badass.

This action caused the dire wolves to suddenly howl out as one.

"They are calling reinforcements!" Alice tightened her grip on her sword as me and John kept a lookout for more.

While she was dealing with the main group of wolves, me and John were dealing with our own wolves, and although they were stragglers, that did not mean they were not as dangerous as the ones Alice was dealing with.

John was using his superb fencing skills he learned at school, all to wield the sword that was given to him, using it deal with two dire wolves at once. Although the fighting technique for a fencing sword and a bastard sword was different, he still was able to make due.

While the two of them were using swords to deal with the monsters, I was left flailing my stick at a particularly mean looking dire wolf that had had its eyes on me the moment our two groups meet. It must have sensed my weakness, that or its dormant dog genes are telling it to 'get the stick' that I was holding. Either one is not good news to me.

It was only through my new bodies strength that I was able to keep it at bay. Suddenly, a deafening howl shock the area we were present in, it disoriented me and caused Alice to miss.

That moment of carelessness was all it took for the wolf in from of me to lunge. still confused from the howl, I was a second too late as I shakedly lift my staff to defend myself, with a loud bang, the dire wolf crashed into me.

It was only thanks to lady luck herself that I managed to lift my arm in time, so instead of ripping out my jugular, my right arm was bitten into instead. That, however, did not make it any less painful.

Crunch.

"Aaaaaahhhhh!"

The sound of my arm breaking and my hellish scream shook the surroundings, causing a pause in the battle. the wolves seemed to be rejoiced at the sight of me falling, while John had a look of horror.

"Alex!" John shouted, trying to get to me, but was held back by the two wolves in front of him.

Before the wolf could further enjoy his new chew toy that was my arm, the dire wolves joy was smashed as a familiar flame came screeching toward it, and with a quick slash the wolf collapsed on top of me causing me to groan from the pain.

That last attack seemed to take a lot of Alice's energy as she looked out of breath, as well as, the fact that the once proud flames that encased her sword were dimming. She must be running out of MP or whatever she called it, I couldn't help thinking. But I was focusing less on the princess, and more on the giant wolf that was pressing down on my wounded arm.

"Could someone come over here and lend a hand?" I could not help groaning at my two 'supposed' companions.

John wanted to come and help but was stopped by the wolves, while Alice was dealing with the main group. If she tried to take a step toward me, we would be swarmed.

I grumbled at the so called usefulness of friends, and with the staff in my free left hand I slid it under the dead wolf. I gagged at the smell of the headless body, thankful that Alice's flames cauterized the wound enough that my face was not drowning in wolf blood.

Using my one free arm, I used the leverage of the staff to tilt the body. By wiggling I managed to dislodge my broken arm and finally the rest of my body.

Panting with effort, I leaned heavily on my left side using the weapon that I once thought useless, to lean against. I looked around at the battlefield, marveling at the skill and magic that Alice was displaying. While she may be a pain in my ass, she at least had the skills to back up that boastful attitude.

"Howl!"

The sound once again shook the air, though this time we were prepared, however, what we were not prepared for was the massive beast that showed itself following the howl. Nearly double the size of the other dire wolves, it towered over the rest of the pack.

Its very presence sent fear and obedience throughout the pack as the pack of wolves parted and bowed to their superior. Following its appearance, the rest dealing with John retreated and a few I hadn't noticed in the bush right by me went as well. This scared me as they could have attacked me at any time while I was struggling.

"Form up" Alice beckoned us.

Both me and John slowly moved toward her position as what I can only assume is the Alpha, watched us with the same attitude one gives when looking at ants.

"He is challenging me" Alice tells us as she stares the Alpha in the eye.

"What? you can't face that thing." John refuses "you can barely even stand." he points out.

Looking at Alice, she looks sickly as her pale complexion shudders with the effort to stay awake. she has to use her sword just to hold herself up.

However, she shakes her head. " We don't have any other option, I am the only one who holds any chance of dealing with the Alpha."

"Let me go, I am supposed to be the hero, so let me do what you brought me here to do"

She takes a struggles breath,"It is because you are the hero that we can't risk it. you have not even awakened your mana, what makes you think you can deal with that class C monster." she lifts her sword and gets in a fighter stance.

John wants to retort, but knows that he could barely handle the normal wolves, let alone this supposed king of wolves.

"May Alders hand guide my blade!" she shouts as she rushes the Alpha with sword raised, sword ablaze.

The Alpha does not sit still and rushes toward her as well, the winds seem to heed its command as it swirls around its body. With a loud bang the blade and fangs collide!

The reaction of the flame and wind meeting sends the already weakened Alice flying, with the Alpha not even fazed as it rushes toward her sailing body.

"Alice!"

"Alice!"

We both shout as we watch in cold horror as the fangs of death rush at her vulnerable body, yet we can do nothing.

Before I can rush in and try to get to her a blinding flash lights up the area, blinding both me and the wolves with its piercing glare. I try to blink away the dots flashing in my eyes as I squint and see a sight that leaves me speechless.

Holding Alice in his arms is a glowing John as he glares at the Alpha with an uncontrollable rage coursing through his body.

Alice is looking up at him with a reverent look of adoration while her wounds seem to heal in the lights glow as her complexion also improves.

While I couldn't help grumbling about why he didn't go all super saiyan when I was the one in danger, I mean I could really go for that healing light thing as my arm is killing me!

I look down and find a green glow flowing through my veins through my open wound.

"Well crap"
