Still not quite recovering from the shock, Katrin Allen, Zette Harper, Maylene Maurice and Jessa Kowalski watch the party unfold dramatically. They did not expect the sudden announcement of their friend's engagement—especially not to her sworn enemy!
"What do you think?" Maylene asks the group when the dinner starts. The table is laden with Fennel-crusted rib roast and Yorkshire pudding.
"I don't know," Katrin answers. "But she seems comfortable with him now. Just look at their kiss earlier!"
"This is huge! This is a major PR frenzy. Just minutes after the announcement, I've already received several calls for interview appointments! I wish Lucy warned me about this," Jessa frets wildly as she manically checks several phones inside her carry-all.
"She should have at least told me," Zette says grudgingly. "I'm her manager. Don't you think I should be informed of things like this?"
"Girls, calm down," Katrin interjects as the tension around the table becomes palpable. "I think something's going on. Something big. If Lucy didn't tell us about the engagement, then there must be a reason why." She watches Lucy eat with Gray on the stage together with Mr. Marcel Woods and Mr. Cornelius Langdon. Lucy, who usually enjoys eating, looks like she's only trying to look like it.
Yes, Katrin concludes. There's really something going on.
"Do you think they're in love, though?" Zette asks as she spoons a piece of roast in her mouth.
"After what they've done to each other, you really think they're just gonna decide on marrying because they got tired playing games?" Jessa retorts, rolling her eyes.
"Whichever it is, it would only mean one thing. Lucy is going to end up with a man—a man she hates. As her friends, we need to make sure her life's not going to be miserable." Looking determined, Katrin waits patiently, her eyes tirelessly observing Gray Langdon. After about fifteen minutes, he wipes a handkerchief across his mouth and rises from his seat. He appears to say something to Lucy, then he kisses her forehead lightly. As he does so, camera lights flash in their direction, as if waiting to capture every romantic moment of the star-crossed lovers—if they are, indeed, lovers.
"It's time," Katrin murmurs, standing up. The rest of the girls look up at her, startled.
"What?" They ask at the same time but Katrin only shakes her head in an answer, her eyes never leaving Gray. As she spies him ambling toward the nearest bathroom, she drags the three girls with her.
"Keep quiet and do not attempt to attract any attention!" Katrin hisses when they start protesting loudly. "We're going to teach that guy some lesson."
