Chapter 69 - Dogfighting is Illegal

When Chen Ling awoke, the dust had settled and the students were loitering about, talking about the battle. The mean kids were on their hands and knees, and for some reason there was a fourth one with a delicate face, simply shaking his head at the three on the ground.

The spirit beasts on the other hand, found places on far sides of the park to tend their wounds.

She found Xiaohei curled up by her side, sleeping, likely tired from fighting like that for so long. She gently picked him up and cradled him in her arms.

"Thank you Xiaohei!" This time, he fought for her sake, while she could not help. Though it was simply that sort of challenge, she still felt apologetic, as well as thankful for him for putting up with her.

She still remembered the pain of the lightning bolt, and the tremor in her insides as well as the flesh burning pain at the impact. Fortunately, Xiaohei had a mysterious resistance to the lightning, otherwise both of them would have become severely wounded.

Nonetheless, she was very angry at those bullies for being so heavy handed. Not only did they borrow their siblings beasts to battle, all of which had higher cultivation's, even when they lost they hanged up on Xiaohei like some cowardly chickens. She thought they should've been fried instead, and become chicken nuggets.

As she was thinking this a bright light flashed across the dark field.

"Hey! Are you the kids who started a dogfighting ring?! Don't you know that's illegal?!" It was undoubtedly illegal to pit animals against each other for sport without a permit. All the kids immediately started panicking, and scattered in all directions. They had no idea that what they were doing was illegal, and had run away in fear of trouble.

The guard was stunned at the sheer amount of children, and acted dumbstruck like he just found a possum nest in the trunk of his car.

Chen Ling just stood dumbly. Was she going to get arrested? Was she going to jail? She had always been a good girl, would that end today?

A hand grabbed her own and pulled her along as a group of five ran away under the cover of the night.

When they stopped, they were in an unfamiliar street, and she found that the ones who took her away were those bullies. The one who pulled her along was the fourth one that wasn't present before she passed out. They were all standing around awkwardly. She glared at them coldly, knowing they were responsible for putting her and Xiaohei in pain.

"What are you doing with them?" Xiaohei had just woke up, and noticed she was alone with the four brats who picked a fight with them. Three of the brats immediately cowered when his golden eyes swept over them. They had reverted back to their original color when he stopped using the tyrant qi. The spirit beasts that were in charge of protecting them also lowered their heads, not daring to meat his eyes. Only the Phoenix perched on a lamplight watching him in deep thought.

"They pulled me along here. I don't know why." At those words Xiaohei began to sway his tail, blade peaking out occasionally as he watch them threateningly.

It was at this point that the fourth boy that was unknown to Chen Ling walked up and made a 90 degree bow

"We're sorry!" The others were standing around awkwardly when the boy's fist landed on their heads.

"You apologizes too! It's all your faults anyway!" Nodding obediently, they joined the 90 degree bow.

"""We're sorry!""" Though reckless, they were still children, and felt guilty for their shameless actions.

"I can't believe you idiots called me out here to gang up on a girl! Have you no shame!" This time the boy scolded the other three, who apologized to him obediently.

"I'm Xue Fenglan, sorry my friends caused you so much trouble. They don't usually act this way. I don't know what got into them." He said guiltily, holding out his hand for a handshake.

She wasn't sure what to do, and looked at Xiaohei. She unconsciously looked for his advice when assessing a person.

"This one is different from the others. The girl actually has a more decent head on her shoulders, and only came later. There is no need to blame reinforcements, only blame the fools who start the conflict." He naturally knew more about knowing whether it was worth causing grievances with. A reinforcement usually have no conflicts with you initially, so it was a waste of time to pick at them.

Getting the okay, she cautiously shook the hand, with her other arm still holding Xiaohei.

"Wait a second, he's a girl?" She suddenly remembered something off with his words. Surprised, she said it out loud.

"""Hahaha!!""" The three lackeys in the back burst into laughter.

"What a joke!"

"Hey Red Phoenix! She thinks you're a girl!"

"You always did look kinda girly!"

They thought it was hilarious, and the tension was wiped from their shoulders as they laughed to tears as they took the opportunity to tease him when...

"H-how did you know?!" At that, all the boys went silent like the dead long buried, while Chen Ling was just as shocked.

"X-Xiaohei told me..." she muttered in confusion.

"What are you so surprised for? Is it not obvious?" Now Xiaohei was confused as it looked like he thought it was crystal clear.

"How did you tell? She looks just like a boy?" She asked through her thoughts. The girl(?) indeed dressed in boyish clothes, and had a rough expression, but upon second glance, the features of his face were actually rather delicate.

"Hmph! I've long since become able to tell the difference between human males and females by their scents!" His time spent in the classrooms was for some reason spent learning how to differentiate humans, though he hadn't been around enough humans to tell that they wore distinctly different clothing.

"Y-yeah I'm a girl, so what? Boy clothes are more comfortable..." she said, evidently very embarrassed. The boys were now gawking in shock, and appeared to be zoning out as they processed the information...
