Chapter 20 - The Deal

She stands right there, directly accross where I'm sitting, drenched in rainwater and sweat, looking horrendously exhausted. Seeing her condition, I asked her to come to my side and asked a nurse to help her out. She changed her clothes and left hers to dry. Guess she actually ran all the way. Despite finally seeing her again, my anxiety was growing by the second as the doctors operate on my son.

An hour or two has passed, I'm quite unsure. All I have been doing is fidgeting my fingers around. When I glanced over at Rose, I saw her guilty expression and really felt bad. A nurse suddenly rushes out the door where Jake is in looking frantic and in extreme hurry. DDUG DDUG! DDUG DDUG! My heart palpitates as though it would burst right out of my chest. DDUG DDUG! DDUG DDUG! It feels as though I would vomit my heart out. DDUG DDUG! Every hair, every follicle stands as though soldiers being called for a roll call by a commanding officer called brain. My nerves are at their limit. My sanity is in danger of being overwhelmed by these monstrous thoughts and assumptions as to what might have happened.

Before long, the nurse comes rushing back. It seems like she had to manually page another doctor because a doctor suddenly strided along with her. My alarm bells are ringing inside my head. My alertness level has skyrocketed and I feel like my blood pressure has too after feeling extremely lightheaded and nauseous. Rose seems calmer than I thought, though I know she could be putting up a front so that I wouldn't feel too anxious.

Both doctors come out the operating room and starts explaining what had happened. They said,

"The patient is very lucky to still be alive. He had 2 broken ribs, a dislocated arm and leg, and a brain trauma. As of now, he is stable but we will need to place him under ICU to monitor his conditions. At this point, it is very possible for the patient to develop memory loss whether partial or amnesia as well as other worse-case scenarios. In case he does develop memory-loss, I would suggest you to avoid anything that could make him remember the trauma he had in this experience, at least until his body recovers. On the event you decide that it's time for him to remember, stay by his side and support him. I would suggest you also visit a psychologist to help guide you on how and what to do when he does start to regain his memories."

I had extremely wild thoughts as to what might happen, but I'm glad to hear he's alive. For now, that's all that matters to me. I look at Rose as she lets out a sigh of relief. If it is true that Jake might lose his memory, I think it would be best for him to not know about the accident. For that to happen, he needs to not know about Rose. Knowing about all of this would not only make him hate me, but it could shock him so much that other complications could occur. And so I decided to make a deal with Rose.

"Rose, you heard what the doctor said right? I know this might be really hard, but I don't want to let Jake know about the accident in the event that his memories do get lost."

"But.."

Though hesitant, I saw that she was willing to do anything for Jake. That made me really happy.

"No... alright. But how long will we keep this from him?"

"For as long as we possibly could. And for that reason, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you something. Could you not visit nor show yourself around Jake? I really don't want to make him go through all this again. As his mother, I cannot bear to see him this way."

"I see..."

"I hope you understand why I'm doing this Rose. I will continue financially supporting you with your studies. You could stay at my sister's."

"I appreciate the offer, but my relatives decided to take me in. But this really means that I won't be able to see you guys again, huh?"

I nodded at the question. She wore a valiant, calming smile as she heads inside Jake's room. She enters the room and talks to him for five minutes, although Jake was unconscious. I hugged her as she heavy-heartedly left.

End of Filler - Setting: Present Day

That was the last time I saw and heard of her, but I was really happy to see her again, but my worst fears have manifested intro reality, and now, I'm stuck in between everything.
