A young man wearing the yellow and black uniform of the royal guard. He looked into the night. During a normal siege he would expect the enemy to light the trenches with torches.
No lights came from the enemy trenches just writhing shadows and the sounds of shovels. The city militia was greatly discouraged and were taken of the walls for night watch. While the sun was up what appeared to be a man walked up to the gate and demanded the surrender of the Queen.
It had declared the horde of creature would turn around and go home if the queen was surrendered. The guard captain on duty told the man to go away. The story goes that the creature said the scourge will return to Yourz once they have the queen. Until that time no living thing inside the city will be safe. Once the queen is captured, we shall leave. Until then nothing inside is safe.
According to the roomers the guard captain threatened to shoot the messenger. The messenger proceeded to take a pistol off its belt put the pistol to its head and pulled the trigger. The creature lost half his face turned around and walked back to enemy lines.
The city militia started to whisper about surrender. Before the creature could make it back to its line members of the queens' guard were making arrests and executing people for treason. The people they picked seemed almost random it included people who were not even in the militia. Around one hundred in total they were going to be executed at noon tomorrow.
People were starting to whisper. The commanders of the militias and the knight commanders were becoming suspicious of the militia and other peasant units.
The young soldier wished that the army sent last month had either stayed or had won the damn battle. Fear was growing in the city and strange ordered where being given from the top. Things like moving random rocks a boot to the left. They made no sense and most of the other guards were following the orders halfheartedly.
This was not the young soldiers' problem he just had to stand a half step to the right on guard duty tonight with his bayonet ready on the musket. It was a bit unordinary but not hard.
The guard let out a yawn.
It was then he saw a human skull poke over the wall. Its skull had been carved into and a red gem on its forehead. It stared at him with the milky eyes of a dead man. The creature hissed and lunged at him. He stabbed at it with the bayonet. The creature hissed as the rest of its twisted body appeared on the wall.
"Infiltrators!" cried the young soldier stabbing at the creature as its body twisted at impossible angles to doge the blade. A handful of other royal guards burst out of a watchtower. They rushed to his aid. A handful of similar creatures poked over the wall looked at the situation and jumped into the city interior.
The monster he was fighting jumped back into the darkness.
"Infiltrators over the wall!!!" shouted the soldier. "Invaders over the wall!"
One man rushed over to him the others ran for tower stairs to chase the creatures into the street.
"James are you okay?" asked guards friend Thomas.
"That thing wasn't right," sighed James in relief. "It didn't move like a person I felt like I was trying to stab water."
"What else are they have in that camp," shuttered Thomas.
"I don't know but I fear we will face them soon," said James looking into the darkness a lot more carefully now.
The writhing darkness reminded him of the creatures shifting body and he felt his stomach twist. James threw up over the wall. The city came to life behind him as lamps were lit across the city to help chase down the creatures.
James wondered what people would think about the horrors preparing to assault the walls.
