The oldest man in the city watched the sun begin to set. He had thought to begin shooting up the wall the moment he got here but decided the moment he did the dead would come crawling. It would be better to set defenses and collect as many supplies before alerting the dead to his escape. The defenses where as good as they were going to get. His boys had collected all the supplies they could load into the wagons. The cannons were aimed at the wall and gunners were waiting for him to give the go ahead.
He had not seen the dead all day. A handful of men had gone missing. If he started blasting would the dead come now or would it be better to wait for morning. His gut told him to start blasting. He nodded to the yellow coat supervising the cannons.
BOOM!! BOOM!!! BOOM!!! BOOM!!
Four deafening blasts shook the city. Chunks of stone fell of the wall. Silver runes glowed on the wall.
"The moon has been used to reinforce the walls Maxum!" shouted the yellow coat.
"keep shooting!" ordered the Sergeant of arms. "And if any of you dregs in an orange coat thinks to call me by name I will have you stuffed in the cannon and used to break down the wall!"
The orange coats all avoided eye contact with the commander of the fort as they began to walk to the walls and watch the cleared city around the quick made fort. They had spent an entire day ripping the buildings down and moving every brick to make walls in between the in the four blocks of city they occupied. They were exhausted but to afraid to relax. Every gun that they had was loaded and waiting on the walls in the windows or on roofs. Torches stood in the kill zone waiting to be lit.
A man on a horse came riding down a street. The sounds of hooves came from all the scout rides. They rode for the one gate they had left and was guarded by ten knights.
"They're coming!!!" shouted the first rider. "They've taken the manor!"
A few more of the riders rode into the view the last ones had draw their sabers. Then the men on the wall saw the orange coated rider slashing at another orange bastard. The men on the wall looked at the scene confused. Until the horse of the chasing rider opened its mouth to reveal rows of sharp teeth more natural to a wolf than anything else. The pursuer bit the leg of the lead horse causing a trip. The rider was thrown forward.
A gasp came from the men on the wall. The rider stood up nocked senseless and began running to the shouting men on the wall. He kept hold of his saber and drew his pistol. The men on the wall cheered and called to get him to come to the gate.
A troop more of the pursuers came emerged from the street.
"Open fire!" shouted someone.
Pop!! Pop!! Pop!! Pop!!
A group near the gate opened fire on the pursuing riders and horses. Five pursuers went down with horrid screams. They writhed on the ground like living things. The rides got up with their sabers and began to limp after the bastard. The way they moved was too familiar to the men on the wall. They were clearly dead.
"Shoot them down!" shouted the wall as the man got halfway to the gate.
Pop!! Pop!! Pop!! Pop!!
The corpses were shredded. They fell to the ground to, but some continued to crawl after the escaping man.
A new wave of mounted pursuers ten in numbers emerged to chase down the man. More horses began to flood from the streets. Every horse in the city was here right now. The men on the wall could not help but dread that all these horses had fangs. The horses roared and charged the man.
"Shoot shoot!" shouted a man on the wall. The charge of horses closed on the fleeing man. He pointed his pistol behind him and shot. The round hit the shoulder of one of the beasts. The Pursuers had closed the distance and one had gotten hold of the mans pistol arm.
A few feet from the gate the bastard stabbed the toothed horse with his saber as another pursuers bit into his other shoulder.
The men on the walls booed as they shot at the monstrous horses. The pursuers pulled the man back as another got its teeth in the man. The knights rushed out the gates with their great swords at the ready. A handful of dismounted bastards rushed out with their sabers to fight of the fell horses. The escaping man was grabbed by one of the other cavalrymen and he was dragged back inside by two of his fellows. The knights fell back behind the gate in good order decapitating any of the monster horses that got inside the range of their swords.
The gate closed behind them and soldiers who were to broken to hold a musket staked bricks from a nearby pile to seal the gate.
The musketeers shot the monsters from the safety of the wall. The heard of pursuers began to retreat. The orange coats began to cheer at their victory until they saw the knights.
