Life is truly unpredictable, thought Leticia. One can never rely on others, no matter how good they had been at the beginning. Her first and greatest example had been her parents, who chose to protect the Gutierrez name over her, their one and only child. She would never do that to baby Stella, her precious and innocent child. Now, it seems that her landlady is against her because of the issue with that impertinent man who came to the shop asking to buy her infant child. "Don't you know who that man was, Maria? That was Senor Mercado!" as Leticia was listening to her with realization dawning in her eyes, Adelina continued, "Yes! The Senor Mercado who owns most of the properties around this side of town! You stupid, foolish woman! How could you bring up that baby with your childish and foolish attitude!"
That evening, just after feeding the baby, Leticia packed up her few belongings, ready to leave the place. The night was cold as gusty breeze swept the town. She decided to find a safer place for her and her infant. With fear in her heart and tears in her eyes, she felt so deflated and wished she had someone who could help her through this unrelenting misery. She had no other choice but to pray and ask God for guidance. She protected the baby from the cold with a thick baby blanket wrapped around its body. Leaving a note for mamita on the dining table, Leticia left with the infant asleep in her arms. Clothed in a man's clothing to disguise herself being a woman, Leticia walked along a hidden pathway away from the main road. The moonlight was her only guide to see where she was going. It didn't matter to her where she is headed for as long as she and her baby were safe. She missed her parents and home in Sao Paolo, wondering if they think of her too. To consider going back home is out of the question, knowing that her parents will never take her back unless she disposed the child. Her child is now more important to her than anything else. She has sent a letter to Steven telling him about her situation, but she didn't leave a return address since she couldn't risk anyone else finding out.
