Chapter 8 - Last Chapter

"Oliver, would you like to see how to batteries are kept and then take a lunch break? I still want to go over the catalog with you." Oliver's eyes gleamed in excitement. "Yes, yes! I would love to!" Oliver and Dr.William chatted for a bit about the work conditions and pay offered for the various positions while waiting for the physical check to finish.

At last, the door opened and the batteries were led from the small check-up room into the middle of the main hall.

The scientists commanded them to raise their arms and they obeyed. The smocks were removed and a thin layer of Antihypoxidermis gel was spread on their skin. Before the gel dried, a strange plastic-cloth synthetic mix was wrapped around certain parts of their body.

Each battery was equipped with a small harness that would provide stability when they were submerged into the formalin mixture. The batteries were moved into the tanks along the wall.

The scientists expertly attached the various appliances needed to sustain the batteries life.

Once they were securely placed in the tanks, oxygen masks were pulled over their head to ensure they wouldn't die. "Dr.William, what IS that strange object being stuck all over the synthetic material?" Oliver pointed to the thin threads that were attached to the batteries.

'Well, that is quite simple. That is the thermalere transmitter. It allows the thermal energy to become converted into electricity which is then transmitted into a generator that is used by the surrounding homes." Oliver nodded in understanding.

He knew what a thermalere transmitter was, he had just never seen one before. The scientists closed the tanks and flipped switches on the control panels. The Formalin mixture poured into the tank from above. Before long the batteries were completely drenched and cold.

"Oliver, this may disturb you a little but try not to be shocked. The process of thermal absorption is very painful. Before transferring here, the batteries had to have everything relating to sound removed. This includes everything in their mouth.

It's okay to be disgusted. Many interns have fainted once they saw the internal condition of these things. But don't worry, it's all natural. Eventually, they faint and stop moving. So you won't have to see it for long." Oliver looked at Dr.William trepidly. He gulped and turned back towards the tanks.

"All in the clear!" "Okay, Turn it on!" The scientists turned to Dr.William for the first time. He nodded in approval before the scientists flipped the switch.

The batteries began to thrash about in the water. Their eyes opened wide and they began to struggle out of the restraints. They couldn't break the metal, however, and opened their mouths to scream. No sound was made. Fresh blood was coughed up by the batteries and their eyes bulged. The mouths were empty.

Nothing was there apart from scarred tissue. Oliver turned away in disgust. Dr.William comforted Oliver and led him out of the room. "I'm sorry Dr.William, I really am. I just couldn't stand the sight of those.." Oliver fought back the gagging feeling.

"Its okay Oliver. You'll get used to it. This is what it's like every time they bring new batteries in. Let's take a break and I'll explain the equipment. Remember not to exhaust yourself too much. You still have to learn about the other member's jobs as well.

I'm not sure I should be telling you this but... Our company plans on making you the next leader of the MHEMC." Oliver smiled. He knew now that his dull life was soon to take a brilliant turn.
