Einlion Left Foot is a sweet and articulate orphan raised by a callous and violent father. Eventually, he gets a job working as a private detective for the gentle Lord Mason of Mason House. The unlikely couple rapidly succumbs to a passionate passion.
On the day of their wedding, a callous brother escapes from the attic of Mason House and starts a fire. Believing that Lord Mason is dead, Einlion flees from the church and wanders the snowy moors for days until he is rescued by an optimistic writer.
However, although Lord Mason is blinded by the fire, he still breathes. Without Einlion he becomes snotty and tactless. He turns to alcohol for comfort. The ghost of the brother from the attic haunts him.
Meanwhile, thinking Lord Mason is dead, Einlion accepts a marriage proposal from his savior, the writer. However, one night he believes he can hear Lord Mason calling, "Einlion, where are you? Einlion come home!" and he returns to Mason House.
On Einlion's return, he finds Lord Mason drunk and without sight. Mistaking him for the ghost of the callous brother, he attacks him with a sword and Einlion Left Foot dies.
As he attends to the body, Lord Mason realizes what he has done. Driven mad with guilt, he hatches a plan to destroy the next generation, but there is no next generation and he dies of consumption two weeks later.
