Chapter 13 - Melancholy

"They were in love and nearly had children, Eternity was far away but still so near. He carried her pictures, inside his soul, nobody will understand what happened at sea. Louise... my heart, you are so beautiful, oh roses want to wither when they see you. Louise... my heart, you have to understand. only without me our love will persist. I may die in this war and I can't have the courage to see you in tears hearing the news. Be happy my love, for in the future we may meet again."

(AN: I edited some parts of the German Ballad song to fit in the war environment)

As night fell, the heavy gunfight stopped, and only some sporadic guns continued to reach the ears.

The hesitant German ballad sang in the mouth of the machine gunner Sean. Most of the third company was still, just continued to listen and listen. Some doing maintenance on their weapons, others, just sat there staring at the stars in the night sky and their hands wiped their eyes unconsciously.

They may have thought of home, their lovers, wives, children..... family....

Strong as a German soldier may be, but they will still think of their own home, think of their family when night falls. Not a single one of them knows that when the dawn has come, in the enemy's next attack, they may not survive.

Strong...yet only in the war…

"Lieutenant, Orel is not going to make it."

Seargent Hall's words pulled Alex back from the meditation on the song. He stood up in a hurry and came to the young Orel.

This is a young man who is barely 19 years old this year. In the half-day course of battle, a stray bullet hit him.

He has been struggling with death for a long time, but now he is weak, apparently life is moving away from him.

"Hey, Lieutenant." Seeing Lieutenant coming over, Orel reluctantly said.

"Hey, Orel." Wang Weizhen said as calmly as possible.

"Sir Lieutenant, am I dying?"

"No, Orel, you won't die." Alex sat down beside him and held Orel's hand in a grip: "Don't you forget, we will continue to fight those British insects."

"Ah, the United Kingdom, those damn British cockroaches." Oriel heard that the words "British cockroaches" seemed to have recovered some anger, but then sighed softly: "Unfortunately Sir, I feel that I can't do it. I am.... too tired..."

Alex has no idea how to comfort him.

"Louise... my love, you have to understand....." Sean sang a song. Voice fleeting tired coming to Oriel's side.

"Hey, Sean."

"Hey, Orel."

"I am going to die, Sean, tell my mother not to be sad, I am dying for the pride of Germany."

"I know, Orel." Sean's tears flowed out.

They are German soldiers, but they are also human beings, people who have flesh and blood and heart.

They will be sad and they will cry too…

There was a small blush on the pale, bloodless face, and then Oriel suddenly shuddered and reached out: "Lieutenant, save me, I don't want to die, I don't want to die…I don't want to die Sir"

Alex grit his teeth and took his hand, but he could do nothing, he couldn't beat death.

Suddenly, the hand held in his hand became soft and weak, and when Alex loosened, the hand fell.

The young Orel died.

"Be happy my love, for in the future we may meet again."

Sean's voice came again.

Everyone is watching Orel silently, and no one knows when they will sleep here forever like Orel.

The body of Oriel was buried, and Alex looked at him with his men.

The third company lost another comrade-in-arms. He is so young. He showed such bravery on the battlefield, but he was so weak in the face of death.

He wants to live, his desire to survive may be stronger than anyone else, but no one can save him.

The voice of sadness sounded again and again on the ground…

Alex sat in a corner and listened to the soldiers singing folk songs in turn. He felt that his mood was a down at the moment.

He unconsciously got to the tracker and called Asuka. Asuka's voice quickly came: "What's wrong, your voice seems to be a little sad?"

"Indeed....., one of my men is dead," Alex whispered.

Asuka seems to be curious about this: "Is this strange? People will always die, for example, you will also die. According to statistics, in the First World War, a total of …"

"I don't want to listen to those boring statistics." Alex interrupted Asuka's words: "You are a machine, you will never understand human feelings. When someone who has been with you suddenly leaves you, you will be sad, tears…"

Asuka was surprisingly silent.

Yes, she is a machine, she will never understand human feelings.

After the call, Asuka asked: "So why are you looking for me?"

"No, just want to find someone to chat." Alex sighed: "I don't belong here. I came here just to get out of here. It is reasonable to say that I should not have any feelings about this. But this time, I know Adolf Hitler, even recognized Erwin Rommel… Did you know? I never thought about seeing one day living…"

"Adolf Hitler, who was born in…" "Unrecognizable" Asuka quickly followed the procedure.

"Enough, don't tell me this." Alex interrupted Asuka with a little irritation in his tone: "Don't tell me that I don't have permission to this information. Hell, do you know what kind of person Hitler and Rommel are? I am more clear about them than you. Emotion, understand? Emotion! You have to know what human emotions are and what you want to express."

"I don't know, I don't understand." Asuka's voice sounded a little wronged.

"I'm sorry." Alex felt that it was a bit unreasonable to treat a machine with such an attitude: "I don't know why, I already have feelings for them, for this era. Not only for Hitler and Rommel, but also for the third company." Ah, I even taught them to say 'brothers' and taught them to use the ' Heil third company' to express the feeling of victory. I also told Hitler that there is a mysterious place in Himalayas. Say... that maybe he would explore those areas because my influence has sent people to the areas surrounding it one after another?"

"I don't know, but I have to tell you that every word you say in this era, everything you do can affect history." Asuka's tone became more serious.

"I don't care about this, no matter what Dr. Reznov's warning." Alex did not care at all: "I just thought, if one day I will leave this era, will I miss them? Can I still come to this era and see them again?"

"There is a possibility in theory, but I can't predict the specific process."

Alex smiled, yeah, what will happen in the future, no one can predict in advance.

Times are changing , this era will leave its mark, and many years later.... Will they remember the existence of this person?
