It was near midnight. The sky was cloudy and it seemed to forecast rain. The wind was making swooshing noises by the window and a small light was on inside.
Inside the mansion, Jace was on the phone. Brae was asleep in the conjoined room. She wasn't comfortable sleeping next to him tonight and he respected her decision for now.
"I don't want it to seem forced, make it casual.", Jace was speaking to his secretary, Ariel.
On the other side of the phone, Areil rolled her eyes. She respected her boss, he signs the checks after all but he was full on crazy.
When Jace began his relationship with Brae, she was there. When Brae eventually ran away, she was also there. She had witnessed the breakdowns, the berating, and the firing of employees. In her opinion, Brae was right to remove herself from the relationship. It was toxic.
However she was silent despite the guilty feelings that consumed her. She didn't know how they started dating but she knew Brae looked extremely young and Jace had to have been 20. She mentally cringed.
All throughout their relationship with she wondered why and how they were together. As she slowly witnessing the wreckage that was their relationship unravel, she realized why.
Brae had all the power but with no knowledge on how to use it and Jace had all the control. Actually, Jace had too much control.
"Hello? are you paying attention", Ariel was snapped back into reality. She could hear the anger in his voice but she was calm.
"I am sorry. Where do you want the venue to be?", Ariel was setting up a gathering for Jace and his friends, a celebration of sorts.
"I want it at K Resorts. Clear it out, I don't want to see any other guests during my stay," once again Ariel rolled her eyes.
"And I don't pay you to daydream on the job, pay better attention next time. You're lucky I'm in a good mood"
She felt really bad to whomever married that monster. Truly.
He wanted the whole resort emptied for the two days he will be there so she has to pay the resort to cancel everyone else that's booked.
'Everyone else paid to be there as well, why do you get to ruin their little vacations', Ariel would never say any of this out loud but she really couldn't understand the filthy rich. They acted above everything.
In her 28 years of living, she had grown so pessimistic that she lived with no hope whatsoever. She never expected anything good to happen out of pure chance.
You have to work hard for what you want. It wouldn't just fall into your lap.
Her family lived just above the poverty line and she struggled to finance her way through university. Even with all her hard work, she still had a ton of student loan debt.
Life had been depressing.
After she had graduated MJ University, it was difficult to find a good paying job.
The happiness of finally landing a secretarial job was quickly diminished as soon as she started.
The hours were unnecessarily long, she was constantly on her feet, and her boss was demanding and cold.
It was past midnight but she had to get up in a frenzy when she heard her boss' ringtone.
Just from the way he spoke she knew Brae was back. Or else how could he be in a mood good enough to excuse her mistake.
After she was done writing down his instructions and setting alarms, she passed out and dreamt.
