Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

"Pierce, where are you?!" Mom yelled from the house.

"I'm in the tree house," I replied. I started climbing down the rusty metal ladder and ran to the back door.

"What are you doing up there after dark?" Mom asked, concerned.

"I was just enjoying the sun set," I said shrugging.

"Well, it's dinner time," she announced sternly.

"Okay," I replied.

I struggled to open the rusty hinges of the back door. I sped to the dinner table and pulled a chair out.

"How was work, Dad?" I asked, settling in.

"It was fine. There was traffic on the way home though." He said, sighing. He seemed happy to be home. My dad is a banker, he works behind the glass wall and helps customers. He cashes in checks for them, or pulls out money when needed.

After dinner I went upstairs to finish my homework and got ready for bed. When I walked into my room, there was a note on my desk. In plain ink, it said, "Beware the dangers of tomorrow." I read it twice, confused. I tossed it on the desk and proceeded to do my homework. I slipped into my bed sheets, and dozed off before I knew it.

The next morning, I got ready for school. I put on a black shirt, dark brown khaki pants, long black overcoat, and black steel-toed shoes. Finally I walked to school, like I do every morning. When I turned the corner I saw a man wearing a black coat running around the corner. For some reason, something was off about this man. He seemed suspicious somehow. I cautiously backed away, and resumed my journey to school. When I got there, my best friend Max Boom was waiting with my other best friend, Sabrina Kinetic. Max had messy, light brown hair and blue eyes. He was around the same age as me (and to my dismay) he was a little bit taller than me. He was wearing an orange shirt, black shorts, black shoes and a red jacket. Sabrina is also about my height; she has green eyes and long blonde hair which today was in a ponytail. She was wearing a white, long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, white shoes, and a black t-shirt. Max was holding his newest rocket for the rocket club. Sabrina was holding a new magnet the shape of her dog.

"Hey everyone, how're you doing?" I asked.

"We're fine. Look at this new rocket I built out of foil and cardboard!" Max said. "How is your drawing coming along?"

"Oh, you can see for yourself." I said pulling out the drawing from my bag.

It was a drawing of a realistic lizard but with a skull head; it had spines coming out of his head and a large spine coming out of its back.

"That looks so cool, Pierce! Could you draw me a picture like that?" Sabrina asks.

"Sure, I'll do that." I replied, enthusiastically.

We went to our homeroom on the second floor. Afterwards we went to Math, History, Science, English, P.E., and finally my favorite class, Art.

"You can draw whatever you like, everyone." Mrs. Gargavoil informed us.

"Yay! I can draw whatever I want." I exclaimed with happiness.

"So what are you going to draw, Pierce?" Sabrina asked.

"I'm not sure but I hope it'll be good." I replied.

"Well...maybe, you could draw a picture of me." Sabrina suggested nervously.

"Right Rina, he would totally draw a picture of you." Max snickered with sarcasm.

"Don't make fun of me Max, it took a lot of gu-" Sabrina paused, looking red.

"Max, stop embarrassing Sabrina. Sabrina, I would be happy to draw a picture of you." She blushed even more.

"Thanks, Pierce." she mumbled whilst still blushing.

It took me most of the class time to work on it. I promptly sketched Sabrina on a beach. When it was finished I showed it to Sabrina and Max.

"Wow, that is really good." Max stated whilst looking a bit of anime surprised.

"I guess it's okay." I said with some modesty.

"Thank you so much, Pierce. That looks really cool." Sabrina said, as her cheeks turned to a rosy color.

"No problem Sabrina, it was my pleasure." I answered back, feeling better about myself.

When we were dismissed, we immediately headed to my house. When I arrived I saw the front door was open. That was odd; Mom and Dad have never anime left it open before. Walking in, I saw a trail of unknown red substance running down the hall.

"What is that smell?" asked Sabrina, sniffing at the air.

I smelled the air. "I have absolutely no idea." I answered.

When we turned the corner we saw two bodies lying on the floor. My parents were lying in a pool of red liquid. It was then when I realized the unknown red substance running down the hall must have been blood. Sabrina screamed while Max stood there white as a sheet.

"Mom! Dad! Are you okay!" I yelled as I ran up to them.

My mom was laying on her back with a hole in her chest; my dad was face down with a hole in his back.

"Pierce, is that you?" My mom struggled to ask because of what was presumably blood clogging her throat.

"Oh my gosh…Mom? What happened?! Are you okay? What do you need?!"

"Go to your Aunt and tell her that it is time." She coughed. "A bus will come and pick you and your friends at the park in a week at around this time."

"Time for what?" I inquired.

"Time for you to learn how to become a hero." She said as she closed her eyes and drew her last breath.

"No!" I yelled through sobs.

I sat there for what seemed like an eternity until Max broke the silence.

"Pierce, we gotta go. The killer might come back." Max said in concern.

"OK, but first let me get some stuff from my room." I rubbed the tears from my eyes.

"We should call the police and inform them that there was a crime scene." Max said with sympathy in his voice.

"Okay." I said.

When the police got here we went to the police station and they interrogated us on what happened.
