Chapter 3 - Flying?

This equipment sounds rather fishy, but what's the hidden effect? Is it really suppose to allow people fly?

"Hmm, do you wanna try it? You look pretty curious." asked Twice Above the Mountain Lord.

"No... not really." Rafael replied as he force a smile, although he was curious about the equipment he would try something he was unsure of. The senior looks like planning to jump over the cliff to test the equipment.

Imagining how it would be if he tried it and end up falling head first into the ground from up above the cliff, hell no, he would rather restrain his curiosity and just watch the experiment than die such a painful death.

"Really? Why don't you try it out? Are you scared?... Well, anyway don't be scared, it's nothing afraid of. Actually dying felt good sometimes. Besides, if you really end up flying because of the equipment it would be a lot of fun!"

Dying? Did he just mention dying? He's thinking of the possibility of dying right? Although the senior was talking pretty fast, the word 'dying' made a pretty good impact to him. Rafael unconsciously gulped upon hearing what the senior said. He's trying to trick me up as a lab rat! No way!

"Although flying would be fun, senior, I don't really like putting my life on the line. Besides, would you really entrust me this item. This item [Wings of Freedom] is a celebrated purple equipment! Such a powerful equipment, although not too much of a rare, people would still spend money to get this! Alas! If it happens to be an equipment that allows one to fly, this would be at the top among all rare items existing. And that would fetch a high price. With that thought in mind, would you really think I'd return this item to you sir?" No matter what, he must not let this senior persuade him doing the experiment! Although dying in this game would just end up being revive in the Cathedral, the pain can still be felt clearly! As a mage with pitiful frail body, falling from a cliff would... he doesn't want to think of it.

"Hmm, that would be true. But, as a friend of Sky Strike Pounding Land Lord would you really have the heart to do that, Magnanimity of a Bar Master-kun?" doubtful and examining eyes were casted upon Rafael, although with smile still resting on the senior's face.

"?" Bewilderment took over Rafael's face in an instant, who's friends of who? "There must be a mistake, I'm not friends with anyone called Sky Strike Pounding Land Lord. I just received your invite and accepted it, thinking I'm just a party filler. And, above all, my name is Magnanimity of a Bookworm."

"You're not... oh. Hahaha! My bad, my bad. Well, well, well. Then, how about joining our guild? Although no one can create guilds here yet, our guild was already established 'back-game'*. You don't have a party don't yah? I'll have you join a permanent one. How about it? Wanna join our guild?"

(back-game: term I used to refer to the game Parallel of computer game version. Which was established 10 years prior to the creation of DMMORPG Parallel.)

True, he don't have a permanent party. Thanks to his chosen class as a summoner, only few would like to party with me. Although I'm off hybrid type, the outcome remains the same. Being newbie sure is hard, if he didn't think Summoner is cool from the start he wouldn't end up like this. Having the chance to join a permanent party now huh, should he take it?

With permanent party, he wouldn't worry about; looking pitiful being a substitute member, the feeling when you arrive early then being left out because the 'fixed member' arrived, although super late. Joining a suicidal and eccentric group of people that scared the crap out of him. Or the fact that shitty people would always took advantage of him, letting him do hardest and dirtiest work, giving him less of what he should obtain from raid, and other things. Rafael was very, very sick of it.

"Should I join your guild, do I really need to do that experiment?"

"Well, yes. Our guild's objectives are all about discovering new things and experementing. Should you join, you'll have to do those things as contribution." explained the senior.

He'll really end up doing it huh? Anyway, if it's just doing experiment that will end his misery, by all means... he really need to think this through.

"This... wouldn't it be better if I have safety measures?" If he can't escape doing this, having safety measures to avoid the unavoidable would be much better.

"Didn't I said that the hidden effect of this cape has already been recognized? What I'm currently experementing here is the maximum height on which the activation requires. All you need is to say [Float] and the effect will activate afterward. I have tried it 10meters in the air before, so if, just if the cape didn't activate in certain heights you can activate it 10meters before ground." the senior explained seriously.

So that's how it is, with the problem of safety answered doing this wouldn't be of problem anymore. Then I can do this without worry and finally join a permanent party!

"Okay, Senior... Senior Twice, I'll do it." Rafael finally gritted his teeth deciding to accept the job.

'Doing a dangerous experiment that may possibly result to death must be done quickly. If not, he don't know but perhaps, given a chance he'll back out.' Is what running through the senior's mind.

"Let's trade."

"Yes Senior Twice."

🍀🍀🍀

The heavy wind breeze towards the two, causing the [Wings of Freedom] to flutter. Rafael, wearing the cape was preparing himself as to what possible outcome. The worst possible outcome would be... yeah, he'll be flattened and have his body parts scattered everywhere.

"Well, I'm going, Senior Twice."

"I wish you good luck!" replied Senior Twice.

Rafael suddenly retreated and crouch down, building up a momentum and started running towards the cliff. Upon reaching the cliff, Rafael jumped down the cliff and spread his arms.

Amazing, flying feels really awesome!

Of course, Rafael didn't forgot his objective and suddenly roared [Float] disregarding the air current hitting his face and, then moments later, nothing happened.

Senior Twice saw everything from the cliff and worried expression flashed his face, he forgot to 'clearly' explained how to activate the equipment, "Boy don't forget to channel your mana into it!" he roared at the top of his lungs, and face-palmed, 'Sorry boy.'

Rafael, on the other side, after failing on activating the hidden effect of the equipment suddenly lost his happy and enjoying face. The thought of falling head first into the ground flashes past his mind and started to shout [Float] frantically. That's when he heard the voice of Senior Twice but because of the distance and the resistance of the wind despairing his hearing, Rafael only heard the word 'don't' and 'channel'.

Rafael's mind started running at a pretty fast pace, thinking of what he should do, and the unavoidable outcome perchance he fail.

The time he spent free-falling, being happy, frantically shouting, and contemplating left him almost 150meters above ground.

He heard senior's voice about not channeling, and the only thing he can associate the word channeling with was mana.

Mana was the only thing that he can 'channel' around so what Senior must've said was 'don't channel mana'.

But Rafael wasn't channeling any mana from the start, thus the words said by the senior sounds strange.

[100 meters]

Rafaell unceasingly shouted [Float] with all his might, the word itself was imprinted in his mind, and left a marked in his heart. It must've been the most pronounced word his entire life.

Unfortunately, his effort was useless. The hidden effect of the equipment didn't activate at all and Rafael was left 50 meters above ground.
