Chapter 1 - The awakening

"WaaWaa!" the chorus cries of babies could be heard coming from a, 200 meters wide and 100 meters long, building situated right in the centre of the city.

Surrounding the building were hundreds of men and women, mostly in pairs; some with joyful expressions, while others not so much. Though what all had in common was a sense of urgency, as though they were waiting for some kind of result.

The reason for this commotion being the awakening ceremony which takes place twice a year, once during the summer solstice and the other during the winter solstice, where the children are tested for their potential in hunting.

The parents are then allowed to choose an egg, which on hatching would be the child's hunting partner, from the level corresponding to their child's talent. The order of entry for each level is based on seniority of the children, i.e the oldest gets the first pick and the youngest, the last.

The talent phase of the ceremony commenced in the afternoon, where each and every child was checked for the level of talent they produced.

The ceremony progressed smoothly, except on three occasions; First when the 17th born, from the house Rock Leon, was found to have a first-rate talent;

The second time was when the 256th child, from the house Arctic Condor, was discovered to have been born with innate spiritual veins and was thus adopted by the clan head himself.

The final occasion being, the 3781st child, from the house Terra Cat, having found to have been born with blocked meridians and almost zero talent for body cultivation.

However, the actual reason for the uproar was not due to the child being crippled, since this was a common occurrence in a clan this big; the actual reason being, the clan prodigy, the 256th child was promised to be the cripple's wife once they both come of age.

This was an oath taken with the heavens as witnesses, by their grandfathers, and hence couldn't be broken. As everyone knows that the consequences of angering the heavens by breaking such an oath, could lead to the devastation of the entire clan.
