Idril blinked and focused on Kate. She was an elegant lady in a bright yellow dress with yellow flowers in her black hair. She had a kind of classic beauty and with her black eyes set against her pale skin she looked ethereal.
"How have you been?" Kate asked Feanor exuberant. "Although, that is indeed a rhetoric question. I hear you have been doing quite well." She didn't wait for him to answer. Instead she leaned to address Idril.
"Hello. Idril, is it? What an unusual name. Lord of the rings. Its as if you were made for each other. Very nice to meet you." Kate came forward and hugged her lightly.
Despite her friendly behaviour, Idril sensed a tension. She hugged Kate and when she was withdrawing, Kate did a strange thing. She touched her hair and pulled up her chin to look at her face. Then she laughed softy and turned at Feanor.
"My mother wants to meet you. She is over there." Kate pointed at another corner.
Feanor seemed visibly reluctant to follow her. He replied coldly, "I have company."
"C'mon. She is dying to meet you. Surely you won't ignore your godmother? Besides, Idril doesn't mind. Do you, dear?" She peeked towards Idril.
Idril, in turn, found the whole exchange strange. "That's okay Feanor. I will be fine. Please go meet your Godmother."
Feanor stared stonily back at her. "But I promised I will not leave your side."
"That's fine. I can survive on my own a few minutes." She smiled. She didn't know why, but she felt she had to show that it didn't bother her that Feanor was leaving her to meet other people. She could feel the mocking gaze of Kate on her.
Feanor took one last look at her and said softly, "I will be back soon. Just wait for me here." Then the two of them headed towards the other end of the party.
Idril sat there at her table nibbling at a cake. She was quite groggy from the alcohol, but the beauty of the setting, the rippling waters of the lake and the rare sunny morning was making her feel blissful. After what seemed like an eternity, she got up to look for the loo. She espied the main house and started walking towards it.
Luckily, she found a toilet down the hall. As she came out of it, she heard voices coming from the adjacent room.
"So", she heard Kate speak," You finally found her."
