Chapter 16 - Art of Control

The next morning, the sun cast a golden hue over the Ryudan Academy as students bustled through the corridors, heading to their respective classes. Kaiser, his mind still echoing with the spells from the "Grimoire of the Primordial Elements," made his way to his Magic Control class, taught by Professor Marcus Windthorn.

As he entered the classroom, a buzz of conversation filled the air. Students chatted about their progress in magic, their aspirations, and the challenges they faced.

"I heard Malachar Windthorn has already begun forming his second magic circle," one student whispered.

"Really? I'm still struggling with channeling my mana properly," another replied with a hint of frustration.

Kaiser took his seat, his thoughts focused on the day's lesson. Professor Windthorn, a stern man with a commanding presence, began the class with a clear, powerful voice.

"Today, we delve deeper into the art of controlling your mana. Remember, raw power is useless without the finesse to wield it effectively," he announced.

The class listened intently as Professor Windthorn explained the intricacies of mana control. "To channel your mana, visualize it as a flowing river. Your will is the banks that guide its course."

Kaiser absorbed every word, attempting to visualize his mana as the professor described. He could feel the energy within him, a pulsating force yearning for direction.

"Now, practice," Professor Windthorn instructed. "Start with simple mana flow exercises. Channel your mana to your fingertips, then retract it back. Control is key."

The room filled with the soft glow of mana as students practiced. Kaiser closed his eyes, focusing on his internal energy. He envisioned it moving towards his fingertips, a gentle stream of power. As he opened his hand, a faint light emanated from his fingers.

"Good, Kaiser," Professor Windthorn remarked, passing by his desk. "Your control is improving, but remember to be steady and consistent."

Kaiser nodded, determined. He continued the exercise, feeling more attuned with his mana.

Around him, students were experiencing varying degrees of success. Some managed to channel their mana smoothly, while others struggled, their energy flickering erratically.

"Controlling mana is harder than I thought," a student near Kaiser sighed.

"It takes practice," Kaiser replied encouragingly. "We'll get better at it."

As the class progressed, Professor Windthorn introduced more complex exercises, guiding the students through the delicate process of mana manipulation.

By the end of the class, Kaiser felt a sense of accomplishment. He had made tangible progress in his mana control, a crucial step towards forming his first magic circle.

After the Magic Control class, Kaiser and Seraphina, having arranged to meet earlier, headed towards the bustling school cafeteria. The air was filled with the aroma of various magical and traditional dishes, a unique characteristic of the Ryudan Academy.

As they entered together, a ripple of reactions spread through the students already seated. Some looked on with open envy, particularly at the sight of Kaiser, a student of unknown origin, in the company of Seraphina Valorian, a noble. Others nodded in respect, appreciating the camaraderie that transcended social boundaries.

They found a table amidst the sea of students. As they sat down, their presence continued to draw attention. Some students whispered among themselves, while others tried to hide their curious glances.

Midway through their meal, a group approached their table. They were members of the Student Council, easily identifiable by the distinctive badges they wore. Leading them was the Student Council President, Lucien Draconis, a figure known for his strong opinions about the nobility and commoners.

Lucien, with his impeccable attire and an air of arrogance, stopped beside their table. His gaze was fixed on Seraphina with a disapproving frown.

"Seraphina, a moment if you please," Lucien said, his tone polite but cold. "It's rather unbecoming for someone of your status to dine with... commoners."

The cafeteria grew quiet, many students turning to witness the unfolding scene.

Seraphina, unfazed by Lucien's words, replied with a calm yet firm voice, "Lucien, in this academy, we are all students first and foremost. My choice of company should not concern the Student Council."

Lucien's frown deepened. "It sets a bad example. The traditions of our social structures are not to be taken lightly."

Kaiser, feeling the tension, spoke up, "We're here to learn and grow together, regardless of our backgrounds. Isn't that what the academy stands for?"

A murmur of agreement rose from some of the surrounding tables, while others seemed to side with Lucien's perspective.

Lucien, realizing that the situation was drawing more attention than he intended, gave Kaiser a sharp look. "This isn't over," he muttered before turning to leave with his entourage.

After Lucien and his entourage left, an air of ease settled back over Kaiser and Seraphina's table. Kaiser, attempting to dispel the lingering tension, turned to Seraphina with a playful grin.

"Did you see Lucien's face? I thought he was going to cast a spell on the spot to turn me into a frog," he joked.

Seraphina laughed, the sound light and melodic. "Oh, I would have liked to see you try hopping around the cafeteria," she teased.

Kaiser chuckled, glad to see her in good spirits. "I think I'll stick to my human form for now. Frogs don't get to enjoy this amazing food, or this delightful company."

The conversation flowed easily from there, with both of them sharing anecdotes from their classes and discussing their magical progress. Every so often, Kaiser would intentionally fumble a spell, making his utensils dance awkwardly on the table, eliciting a series of giggles from Seraphina.

"You're terrible at that spell," Seraphina said, her eyes twinkling with amusement.

"I'm just making sure you're entertained," Kaiser replied with a mock-serious tone. "It's all part of the service here at Kaiser's dining experience."

Seraphina rolled her eyes playfully. "Well, I must say, the entertainment is first-class, even if the magic is... questionable."

Their laughter mingled, creating a warm atmosphere around them. As they continued to chat, their conversation became more personal, touching on dreams and aspirations.

"So, what does a noble lady like you dream of achieving?" Kaiser asked, genuinely curious.

Seraphina thought for a moment. "To be honest, I want to be known for my own achievements, not just for my family name. I want to make a difference in the empire, maybe in the Council of Mages one day."

"That's admirable," Kaiser said, impressed. "As for me, I dream of finding out more about my origins... and maybe, just maybe, finding a real dragon."

"Finding a dragon, huh? That's quite the dream," Seraphina smiled. "If anyone can do it, I bet it would be you."

Their eyes met, and for a moment, there was a shared understanding, a connection beyond words. It was clear that despite their different backgrounds, they both harbored deep aspirations and a willingness to chase after them.

As lunch came to an end, Kaiser and Seraphina stood up to leave. "Thanks for the lunch and the company, Seraphina. It was... more enjoyable than I expected," Kaiser said, his tone warm.

"Likewise, Kaiser. Let's do this again sometime," Seraphina replied, her smile genuine.
