Confusion
Shelby's POV
I go about my whole morning with so much going on in my head during classes. Is he also in love with me? Is this just because he doesn't want to be with other girls? Is it because we're just ONLY friends? Is he gay and I'm his cover-up? I'm so confused.
I just can't come out and say anything to him. How embarrassing that would be for me!! If he doesn't even like me in the least little bit, my heart would be broken. It's better to save my heart than know the truth.
Thank goodness it's lunchtime. I go to the lunch room and start to get my food. When I'm done I go to where some of my other school friends are sitting.
Thomas is the one friend I have that I hang out with the most. I usually hang out with Jenna and James when I go to see him and at school. Jenna and I have gotten closer since Thomas' mom died. Her mom Reneé helped us emotionally during that time.
Thomas' mom was more like a mother to me than my own mom. Since my mom's downward spiral, when I was 8, she offered to babysit me after school for my aunt and my mom when I came back home. I'm unclear about how she and my aunt met or even knew each other. Thomas' mom was a huge part of my life.
Unfortunately, Thomas doesn't have lunch this period. It gives me a chance to talk to Jenna about this prom thing though.
Jenna looks up and waves me over, " Hey Girlie!"
I nod and walk over. Jenna is my friend in just about all my classes. She has always tried to come to my house, but because of Tony, I don't let anyone come over. We went out to the mall every once in a blue moon. We mostly stay at her house when hanging out now. Usually, the boys are there too.
Jenna is nothing like me. She's brave and outspoken. She's 5'4, slender but more muscular than me, with jet black hair that is pin straight and to the middle of her back, and beautiful honey eyes. She's got a tan complexion. Her family is Hispanic.
When I sat down James said, "What's up Shellie?"
James was Jenna's little lost puppy. Where Jenna is so is James. They make a cute couple. Even though Jenna says they aren't a couple. She claims she's waiting for her soulmate.
James is tall. I'd guess about 6'0. He's just a little shorter than Thomas. James is "hot" in a sense. He also has that Greek God body but compared to Thomas ... Thomas would be a god and James would be a demigod. He has yellow-gold hair and beautiful ocean blue eyes. I sometimes wonder what their kids would look like. Yeah, I totally ship these two.
Girls go gaga over him and Thomas. I just don't see it. My eyes belong to Thomas. I just don't see any other guy in the sexy, take my breath away sense except him. I mean I can appreciate the looks of other guys and their characters. None of them ever compare to my guy though.
They both lived in the same community that Thomas did. It was a beautiful place a good ways from the school surrounded by beautiful dense woods. Like their own little town. It's not just houses, they have stores there too.
"Hey, Guys." I say unbothered.
"Oh no. Someone has something on their mind." Jenna teases.
"Penny for your thoughts, Shellie?" James asked.
He's called me Shellie since we were kids. He said only he can call me that. He gets mad if someone else does. He doesn't waste a second correcting them. He says it's our thing. He's a goofy friend that always makes me smile and laugh. I don't mind his nickname for me at all.
"Something happened with Thomas that I don't understand." I said.
"I told you it was about Thomas." James said as he faced Jenna. James and Thomas were really good friends. Best friends to be exact.
"Anyways ... He asked me to prom!!" I couldn't help the excitement in my voice as it raised a few octaves.
After Jenna joined in my excited screams the cafeteria looked at us confused. James was holding his ears rolling his eyes.
"OMG!!!" Jenna squealed. "It's about time." She looked at James.
"Why are you looking at me? This is Shellie's big thing." He rolled his eyes and continued eating.
James is her lost puppy but he hasn't asked her to prom. Jenna won't be his girlfriend but she is still a little hurt he hasn't asked her.
"Unbelievable!" Jenna rolled her eyes as well.
"Guys! Stop! Y'all love each other." I said teasing them both.
Jenna turned bright red and James turned away altogether. I could see a pink tint on his cheeks. They are too adorable.
"So that doesn't explain why you look like you're confused and lost in thought." Jenna said. Grabbing my hand and looking me straight in the eye. "Your news isn't matching your actions."
"I can't help but wonder why he asked me." I feel comfortable enough in our friendship to open up to her.
If it weren't for Tony I'd probably spend way more time with Jenna. I usually only see her when I hang out with them, which 99% of the time is all four of us together.
"What do you mean?" Jenna asked with her brow raised.
I explained the whole conversation from 1st period. She looked at me for a moment in silence.
"Maybe he said that because he felt a little embarrassed but this is a big thing to ask. I'm so glad he did though. At least someone is brave enough to ask someone else."
I knew what she meant as she said the last sentence a little louder. She wants James to get the hint.
After no reply or movement we look over at him and he's gone.
"Oh, What The Hell!" Jenna said. "Ugh!"
I just smiled and shook my head trying to hold back my laugh. I have told her it's 2021, just go ask him. She believes he should do it and it should be some grand gesture. These two are definitely over the top.
--- I'm still just as confused, but I won't let it bother me because the bottom line is ... I'm going to prom with my heartthrob!!---
