After eating Diana drove them back to Demeter's farm. Once there they unload the equipment and Diana opened up the chassis to check the engine. As Diana examined the engine with a flashlight, she asked, "You want to try getting that oil out again while I look things over here?"
"Sure," Demeter replied, grabbing the cart and the wrench and sliding under the tractor. Demeter soon found her old foe, and with new vigor from a delicious lunch she began her attack. She strained against the bolt with all her might, but it still didn't budge.
"Here," Diana said as she threw a small can of diesel under the tractor.
"What's this for?" Demeter asked as she examined the can.
"It's good for cleaning up rust. Just open the can and spread it over with the brush," Diana explained as she went back to her work.
Demeter shrugged and said, "If you say so." She then proceeded to coat the bolt with the diesel.
"If that doesn't work we'll have to soak it overnight," Diana informed the new farmer, "This spark plug is no good we'll need to replace it. The engine looks pretty rough, but I think it might work with a bit of elbow grease."
"I hope so," Demeter replied as she heard her new friend working away at the engine. After what seemed like forever, Demeter finally defeated the evil bolt. As the bolt spins, the oil begins to flow out. As it does, it gets on her hand and arms covering her t-shirt with oil. "Ugh!" Demeter protested.
Diana laughs, "That's why I wore my apron. You should consider picking one up, too, unless you like the mechanic look."
"No thanks," Demeter retorted as she slid out from under the tractor, letting the pan contain the oil instead of her shirt. A sludge like paste slowly flowed down into the pan.
Diana looked over at Demeter as she climbed out. "Yeah, that oil was probably bad before it was left in here. Hopefully, the engine hasn't been completed fouled up. We may have to flush it out a few times," she said exasperated.
"Thanks for the help. This day would have been a waste without you. I'm glad we're neighbors, "Demeter said as she took some old rags and scraped the oil off of her.
Diana shook her head with a bright smile, "Don't worry about it. I'm glad to have a neighbor I can get along with. Most farmers are too secretive and won't even let you near their farm."
Demeter paused her futile scrubbing and glanced at Diana, "I thought everyone would be kind like you... That makes me extra happy that we met them."
"Yeah, a lot of people outside the industry think like that. But the reality is pretty harsh. You should be careful. You never know who will stab you in the back to win," Diana told Demeter with a pained expression.
Demeter did a guts pose and responded, "Let's stick together then. Farming buddies for a nicer life."
Diana nodded and replied, "Sure!"
Demeter than walked up to the tractor and looked over Diana's shoulder at the engine. "How does it look?" Demeter asked, concerned.
"Like I said it's hard to say until we get the fluids changed. I'll clean up what I can and replace the spark plug. Why don't you go pick up some diesel and oil at the gas station while I work?" Diana suggested.
"Ok," Demeter responded. As she was about to leave Demeter noticed a red metal gas canister in the corner. She ran over and picked it up. It seemed to be empty, but it didn't look rusty. "Do you think this will work?" She asked while holding out the can.
"Looks alright," Diana agreed, "Check the inside first. If it's not rusty, then go for it."
Demeter took the can out into the sun and opened it. The inside was indeed empty and rust free. "It looks good, so I'll be heading out."
Diana paused her work as she remembered what Demeter told her earlier. "You are going to have people here to help you plow and stuff, right?" She called from inside the barn.
"Yeah!" Demeter responded while opening her trunk of her standard sedan.
"Stop and get some fertilizer and seeds then. You should be able to fill your trunk and seats with enough to get started. There's a Farming depot only a few miles down the highway. It's called Donny's One Stop Farm shop or something. I get most of my standard stuff there," Demeter consoled.
"Ok, I'll give it a look then," Demeter yelled back as she closed her trunk.
