Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Afghanistan -2008

"Major, there are 12 present inside the building, 4 hostages and 2 armed dogs. Should we continue?"

I glanced at my men and back to Anderson. There are only 5 of us today.

"You four will retreat and wait for back up while I go in alone, if we all head in right now, chances are that we won't come out."

"Major, no I won't let you go by yourself." Said a determined Jones.

"Jones, stand down that's an order."

"I'm sorry, major but I won't just stand and let you go."

"Jones, you are going to have to put your emotions aside and stay."

"Cara, when I married you, I vowed to love you til death do us part and that day is not today."

And with that, Jones hurried to the building in haste. As the realisation hit, that jones had disobeyed my order and gone into the enemy's territory. I followed at once. I was only a few metres away when a massive explosion erupted into the air.

"Major!! Major!"

A high pitched squeal entered my ears and deafened my senses. I looked up wincing to see the building that Jones had entered just a second ago was now up in flames. Jones.

"Jones!! Jones!!"

                -

I woke up covered in sweat and anxiety. That was 10 years ago. Now, I lived with my brother and daughter that Jones and I shared in a 3 bed apartment, in central London. It was nothing like being in the field but it was home.

I got out of bed and headed straight for a shower because I needed one. Bad.

Once I had gotten out of the shower, I dried my hair and started to get ready. Since what happened in Afghanistan I decided I needed a change in my career. Don't get me wrong, I loved the thrill and adrenaline of being in the field but I'm a mum. A single mum now. I need to be able to have a job that doesn't risk my life. Being a mother to Rosie was the only thing that kept me going. She is my world. If it wasn't for her, I would still be grieving for Jones and would never finally move on. It is hard knowing that Rosie may grow up not having a father figure but I know my brother tries his hardest to be one for her.

For work, I wore black skinny jeans, white vest top with a navy blue biker jacket, finished with knee high brown boots.

I looked at my phone to check the time and noticed I had gotten a text from my partner, Sebastian.

Seb: Rise and shine, gorgeous. We have a case to solve- a murder. I'll fill you in when you get here. Don't forget my usual. Seb😁

Me: Finally, about time. I'll be there in 10. Yeah, yeah, I always Remember.😉

"One latte, extra froth with two spoons of brown sugar."

"You are an absolute angel." Seb winked at me.

"Aren't I always?" I smirked.

"I'm just glad we finally have a case after months. A good murder case always beats searching for a lost cat."

I chuckled heartily.

"Lead the way to the scene, partner."

"Deans, what have you got for me?"

"Well Cara, Female, married, mid thirties, the victim received a nasty blow to the head and then was left to deal with the brain haemorrhage that followed."

"Ouch, do you know approximately when?"

" I would say that she died between 4-8pm last night."

"Thanks, Deans."

"Anytime, Cara."

I headed towards Sebastian who was talking to, who I assume, the witnesses.

"Seb?"

"Oh, hey!" "Girls, I'll contact you further if we have any more questions."

They nodded and walked off.

Seb then turned to face me; " Stephanie Wallace and Kat Leeds, both aged 19. Were heading to the club at the end of the road, saw our victim over there, standing near the phone booth. The victim seemed irritated, continued to pace up and down giving the assumption that she was expecting someone. When she saw the two girls, she approached them and asked for the time. They replied saying that it was 6.45pm. The victim looked even more irritated then before, thanked the girls then walked off. Around 11ish, the girls come out of the club to head home, when the see her dead next to the phone booth.

"Hmm. Interesting. Any thoughts, Seb?"

"I think whoever met our victim last, killed her."

" I think I agree with you there. How about we head to the office and see if Felicity could ID our dead victim here."

"Sounds like a plan."
