Chapter 20 - Leaving Askalandra

(Three months later)

Kora: (Packs all her things) --Okay, all set!

Emili: (Sniffs) Kora~! (Hugs Kora) Are you seriously leaving? You could stay here forever, though!

Kora: Emili...

Kora thoughts: To be honest, I really would like to stay too. Especially when I finally made a friend... But I got to find mother, she must be looking for me like crazy. Emili still has Ken and her friends, but mother only has me.

Kora: (Hugs Emili back) Sorry, Emili... But my mother should be so worried about me by now, I have to find her.

Emili: Your mother... She's in the hospital you talked about?

Kora: (Nods) Yea. I have to find it. Sorry, I really would like to spend more time with you guys but...

Emili: (Sniffs) No, don't mind me. If I really was against you leaving, I wouldn't have asked dad to prepare you a map and help you pack up. (Smiles) You should never leave your family all alone. If I were you, I would probably do the same thing.

Emili: But... (Starts crying again) Kora~~!! You have to write to me whenever you can, okay? I told dad to put in 100 packs of letter paper and ink, so you have to write to me! Please!

Kora: Of course I will! Although I'm still not that good at writing... But I'll definitely write to you, that's for sure!

(Ken comes in with another pack of luggage)

Ken: Kora, remember to bring this pack with you too! I made sure to put in enough money, food, and water.

Kora: Ken! Thank you so much, I don't know how to pay you back...

Ken: It's alright. (Laughs) A little girl like you wouldn't survive without at least this much survival supplies.

Emili: (Unhappy) --Ugh, just where is Dan and Jek though? I told them they had to come to at least say goodbye to Kora! Those boys...

Kora: It's okay Emili! They must be busy.

Ken: That's right. These two seemed to be very busy these days investigating some important matter. But they did leave a letter for you as a goodbye gift. (Hands Kora two envelopes) Make sure to read them when you can.

Kora: Oh! Thank you! And please, tell them I thanked them for the gift.

Emili: (Sighs) But still, they could've at least showed their face. This is their last time seeing Kora!

Kora: Emili, I'm really fine. It's good enough seeing you two. I don't want Dan and Jek ditching their work to see me, anyway...

Emili: But…

Ken: (Pats Emili's shoulder) If Kora herself is okay with it, you don't have to be too concerned for her. After all, what she feels is most important.

Emili: (Sighs) Fine. At least they wrote you letters.

(Kora carries her two packs of luggage that Ken and Emili prepared for her, and after a final hug with Emili, she leaves the bakery while Emili waves her hands high up, calling out her name until Kora disappears into the distance)

Kora: (Takes out map) Okay, so where should I start? (Examines) I think I should stick with the big cities, it has a greater possibility of having large buildings like where I live has.

Kora: (Sits down) *Sighs* I have been walking for half an hour, and I still don't see myself any further away from Daintaline. How long would it take me to reach the next city?

Kora: (Looks around) It would be great if there is some sort of transportation...

(Kora walks for another 20 minutes. She stops and sits down to rest again and examines her feet which are starting to hurt from the long walks)

Kora thinking: This is not going to work. It's been about 50 minutes, I've made little progress and my feet is already feeling sour. I need to find something, an easier way for me to move from one city to another...

(Kora looks up and sees a carriage moving towards her way)

Kora: (Lights up) --Excuse me! Excuse me, sir! Could you please stop for a moment?

Carriage men: (Stops the horse) Got any business?

Kora: S-sorry, but I need a ride to the next city, I was wondering if you could help... (Looks through her bag) I could pay for the ride too.

Carriage men: (Rolls eyes) Of course you gotta pay. I'm taking 15 bronze mofs.

Kora: (Murmur) ...Isn't that a bit expensive...

Carriage men: Young lady, you see I am the only carriage men you can find now if you want a ride. Since the Defus attacked 3 months ago, not many people are willing to leave Daintaline. If you don't have the money, then you can wait for another carriage that is willing to take a cheaper price. That is if you can find one.

Kora: (Quickly) I, I apologize, I didn't mean to make you feel unhappy. (Takes out 15 bronze mofs) Here...

Carriage men: (Takes the money) Hop on.

(Kora gets into the carriage. Inside she finds an older boy that is sitting around the corner next to blocks of wooden cases)

Older Boy: (Smiles) Hey.

Kora: (Awkward) H-hey.

Kora thinking: I didn't know there would be someone else in here too... Awkward. Should I start up a conversation?

Kora: *Coughs* --Um, h-hello.

Older Boy: Yes, hello.

(Silence)

Kora thinking: Argh... I can't think of anything to say!! This is so awkward... I'll just sit far away and don't bother him...

Dakium: --My name is Dakium.

Kora: (Startled) --Huh?

Dakium: Dakium Samptom. What's your name?

Kora: Oh, um, Kora. Kora Yorps.

Dakium: I see. (Smiles) Let's get along while on this boring ride.
