A girl sits on her desk, working hard on her test. As she scribbles down answers quickly, she puts her pencil down. She grabs her test paper as she walks to the front of the class and hands her test to her teacher.
As soon as she does this, she can hear the whispers of her classmates.
"What? How is she already done?"
"Don't tell me that she actually knows what she's doing!"
"Quiet!" The teacher shouts. "Who said you could talk during a test?"
Lilac smiles to herself as she walks back to her desk, her golden hair bouncing lightly. As she sits down, she stretches and lays her head on the desk as she falls asleep.
Suddenly, someone shakes her awake. "Lilac, wake up." Her friend, Weston, is standing over her. As she sleepily rubs her eyes, she smiles at her friend. He is chubby with straight, dark brown hair, and brown eyes.
"Is it lunchtime yet?" Lilac asks while yawning.
"Yeah, in 5 minutes," Weston says. Lilac stretches as she stands up and grabs her backpack. Weston starts to pack up too. "Was that test really that easy? I thought-"
Suddenly, Weston is rudely cut off by a familiar voice.
"Hey, Lilac Beckett stop hanging out with this pig." A guy says as he walks up to Lilac, pushing Weston out of the way.
Lilac looks at the guy with an annoyed expression. "Don't call Weston a pig, Kalvin! He's my friend."
The guy, Kalvin scoffs. "Why do you always make friends with losers?" He says as inches closer to Lilac. She quickly evades him and grabs Weston's arm. Weston looks up in surprise.
"Weston's not a pig or a loser. Don't talk to me again Kalvin." Lilac turns to Weston. "Let's go to lunch, I'm starving."
As the bell rings, Lilac drags Weston out of the classroom and they run to the lunchroom.
________
Kalvin stares at the doorway in disbelief. He can feel himself boil over in anger. He kicks over a chair out of frustration. In his distorted memory, he can clearly see Weston Tault laughing at him as he holds Lilac's hand.
"It's that damn pig's fault."
He smiles. "We'll see who gets the last laugh!"
________
Weston and Lilac sit outside, eating lunch in the school gardens.
"Lilac..." Weston starts as he tries to talk to Lilac.
"Weston..." Lilac mimics him mockingly.
"Lilac, you didn't have to do that. You know that he's the richest kid in school. He would bully me either way."
Lilac sighs. "Weston, so you think I care? I can't just smile and laugh when he says those types of things about you. I have to fight back."
Weston smiles. He feels inside his pocket. "Hey Lilac, I have a present for you since we are leaving High School soon."
Lilac's eyes brighten up. "Really? What kind of present?"
Weston pulls out a small bracelet. It had gold vines and leaves around with tiny, purple flowers adorned in it too.
Lilac gasps. "It's so pretty! It looks really expensive too..."
"Don't worry, it really wasn't," Weston says. However, in reality, Weston had saved up money for 6 months in order to buy this for her.
Lilac puts it on her wrist and smiles. "Thanks so much, Weston! It's beautiful."
Lilac also takes out a gift for Weston, wrapped neatly and in a box. "Don't open it now though." She says as Weston looks at her curiously.
Weston carefully places it in his bag. "Okay, I won't."
They spend the rest of lunchtime eating and joking.
