Chapter 2 - Chapter One: The Typical Reincarnation

Kai woke up. He thought about his dream, trying to solidify it in his mind. Later, he could use pieces of the dream for an original story. The dream had been, Kai searched for the right word. 'Exciting', he decided. Then he changed his mind. [No, not exciting. Exciting entails a feeling of eagerness, of expectation. The dream was not 'exciting', but 'enjoyable'.] Satisfied with his decision, Kai nodded his head.

He sat up on his bed and immediately felt that something was amiss. Kai looked down to his side and realized, to his relief, that his book bag was still with him. He then checked his condition and found it to be exactly as when he went to sleep. Kai looked around the room and noticed an obvious difference from the norm.

For starters, he was in a canopy bed. A bed that was raised like a bunk bed, but which had no second bed underneath the top one. This was a big change, as usually, he shared one small bed with his sister. They lived in a house that had only two rooms, a room that served as a living room/bedroom/kitchen, and a bathroom. They had only one bed, so the twins were forced to share. Their mother always worked at night, so she ended up using the bed to sleep while they were at school.

Having a room all to himself, not to mention a canopy bed, made Kai extremely curious as to what had happened. He stepped down the ladder from his bed and explored the room. There was a desk underneath the bed, as well as a closet that could almost be classified as a walk-in. Other than that, the room was quite bare except for two large bookshelves that leaned against the back wall. He went to one of the bookshelves and looked through the selection of books. He had never heard of one of them, very strange as he read A Lot.

He searched the titles, looking for one that might enlighten him about the situation. He ran across one with no title on the spine. Kai took it from the shelf and glanced at the cover. It stated: 'Kai's Diary'. Kai quickly looked through his book bag, relieved to see that his diaries were still there. He became even more curious. Why was there a diary with his name on it?

He opened a page and read it. He kept reading through it, giving himself a good guess for what was happening. It was one of two options. One, this was all a prank. Very unlikely considering he had very few friends, none of which had the guts to mess with him in such a way. And it wasn't like his family could afford to do it. That left number two, that he had been transferred to a different world like in the plot of a book. Of course, there was always the chance he had been kidnapped or something similar, but he chose to rule that option out, as he didn't like it.

The diary's content was about a boy that shared Kai's name. The boy was the same age as Kai was, and, as shown by the picture in the back of the book, they also looked the same. However, this boy's background was completely different from that of Kai's. This is getting confusing, how about this. I'll call the MC Kai and the original, KAI.

Anyways, KAI came from a rich family, the total opposite of Kai. KAI also had the luxury of having two parents, a mom, and a dad. Unfortunately, KAI'S parents were always very busy with work, causing KAI to feel lonely. He was a very smart child, but every now and then he would purposely let his grade drop so that his parents would pay attention to him, because having them see him as a trouble maker was better than having them not see him at all...

KAI was also a very emotional person. He was sensitive and very empathetic toward people. If a friend was crying over a lost pet, KAI would also end up crying, whether he knew the animal or not. His diary contained the everyday stresses and excitements of his second year of high school, a very turbulent time for such an emotional person. Kai found it extremely boring. He much preferred fantasy stories to dramas. The sad part was that the world Kai now lived in was a fantastical world, only that KAI felt no need to include such details, as they were simply an ignorable part of daily life. If only Kai knew, sigh. Well, he would soon enough.

He exited the room, wondering whether he would find more clues around the house. The biggest difference he noticed was his lack of a twin. His sister Kaia and he had always been very close. He wondered what she was doing right now, whether she was still back at their house, waking up to realize that Kai was gone. Or if she had come to this world in a different place. He was a bit disappointed that he wouldn't be able to share this experience with her. But, KAI was an only child. It made sense for her not to be here with him. Still...

The house was very large. It was two stories and had 6 main rooms and 3 bedrooms. It even had a balcony! Kai glance at a clock on the wall. It was very different looking, but still, it held seemed to work the same way and it used the same measurements of time, much to Kai's relief. After all, it was annoying to learn to read clocks, what if it all became useless?! What a waste of time! Kai also acknowledged briefly that this area also used English, just as he did. He was a bit disappointed. How cool would it be to have a cheat like understanding all languages! After all, if there was a new language, it was obvious that he would gain the ability to understand it. Otherwise, he'd have been stuck in this world knowing nothing and unable to learn anything.

Kai thought about all the similarities about this world and his. It was entirely possible that this wasn't a new world at all, but an alternate dimension of Earth. That would explain the clone that he replaced and all of the 'Earthly' items that could be found here. Kai wondered what else was different. He assumed that there had to be something special about this place. Or else he was the most unlucky guy ever, to be sent to a parallel universe almost exactly the same as his own. How annoying would that be? Unfortunately, he had found nothing in KAI'S diary to suggest something strange in the world. (Well, would you write about everyday items in your journal? 'Oh, I turned on the light. The lightbulb was electric, something that came from a thing called technology. The technology in our era is...' I didn't think so)

Kai took another look at the dodecahedron shaped clock once more. There was a silver metal, presumably iron, that covered the corners and a red rusty looking metal that covered the rest. The center had a green shaded glass type material, and on it was the time and date.

Kai started when he noticed the markings on the odd clock. [8:04 am. Wednesday 12/1/18] He remembered that the diary said that school started at 8:15 and that it took approximately 20 minutes to walk to school. A groan escaped his mouth and he debated over whether he should just not go today. It's not like he knew the way. Satisfied with his excuse, he started up the stair.

Just then, a knock came on the front door. Kai let out yet another groan and trudged to the door. He opened it with a scowl, he may be a morning person, but he was NOT a people person. His frown deepened when he remembered that KAI was.

The door opened to the face of a very angry fellow. The guy was much taller than Kai, maybe 5ft. 10in. Not particularly tall or short, but then, Kai was a whopping 5ft 6in. A shrimp. The guy had slender shoulders and was thin, bordering on scrawny. He had wavy, almost curly black hair. His sharp facial features were furrowed in fury.

"Do you know how late you are?! You promised to meet me down the street," He glanced at the clock, "more than half an hour ago!"

Kai smiled awkwardly. "I did?"

"What do you mean? Of course you did! We've been meeting there for weeks! Are you feeling okay?"

"Actually, I'm feeling a bit under the weather. I was thinking of staying home," Kai lied.

The guy immediately turned from angry to worried. "Are you okay? It must be bad if you're willing to miss school. I don't think you've missed a school day since we met in 4th grade. You've gone to school with a burning fever before!"

Kai berated himself for not reading the diary more carefully. He was going to have difficulty playing the part of KAI if he didn't even really understand who KAI was. At least now he knew what the guy's name was. It was KAI'S childhood friend, Aaron.

He sighed, recognizing that he would need to go to school together. Aaron would get suspicious if he missed a school day when he didn't even have a cold. "Nevermind, it's just a migraine. I'll get through it. Let's head to school."

Kai fetched KAI'S backpack from 'his' room and headed outside with 'his' friend. He didn't want to have to go to school, but he supposed that it would be a good opportunity to see the outside.

He stepped out of the house and Aaron urged him to run. Easy for him to say, he went on jogs regularly. Kai used to exercise, but stopped because it required him to have lots of food at his disposal, which he did not have. Aaron, of course, didn't know this. Kai looked much the same as KAI, but KAI was definitely in better shape. Kai supposed now that he had more money, that he could begin to learn martial arts again. His old teacher had mentioned that he had a lot of natural talent.
