The world was silent as if it had ended along with the night. The coolness of the early morning was illusive; the sun had barely risen and this altitude have always been a little cooler.
Daniel woke up to the sound of the big church bells that rang at 4 o'clock in the morning. He was still sleepy and wanted to burrow himself into the warm, soft sheets yet forced himself to sit up on his wooden bed. He rubbed the remainder of the sleep from his eyes and gazed out at the horizon; the vivid light extending across the black velvety sky.
He was a smart looking boy with diamond shaped face, trimmed hairs, deep hunter like eyes and cheekbone protruding, his face features could be discerned easily even though he was yet to come at the end of adolescence.
His lids that were drooping and laden with sleep slowly opened after the vigorous rubbing and he stared at the gate of his room. Light returning to his eyes, his beautiful sharp orbs got livelier and livelier by every second. Soon he started giggling.
Today was the day he was waiting for all of his life for as long as he could remember.
He shifted his eyes from the gate and looked around his small closet sized room, a simple, plain, unadorned room comprised of a desk near the small glass window through which chirping of birds and warm beam of light entered, brightening both his mind and room.
The room also had a bed and a hanger on which some of his clothes were hanging upon.
The walls were not covered in cement but were just made out of reinforced dark red kiln bricks. He could smell the red bricks, the damp place, the old wooden floor and the smell of this place as a whole.
He looked around taking in the scenery of the room which he would be leaving soon, this room had been his home for the last 15 years.
Daniel was a orphan left by his parents at the tender age of one at the front gates of the church's orphanage. Even though he was left as a orphan he never really blamed his parents. The sisters in the church always told them how bad things were out there in the world.
How there was no food for people to eat! How infants would be left to die on the streets and how children had to fight for food!
He sometimes wondered if there were these things happening to people out in the world, then why didn't the church helped them so they could come in and live with the rest of his beautiful family containing of sisters, other orphans and the Fathers. But he always got "It's the will of god" in reply when he asked these questions.
As he heard those responses, slowly and slowly, daniel started to wonder about this existence named god. What was it? What made people worship it and think of this existence as above them?
Why is it that whenever something good happens, it's said that it's the will of the god while if a disaster happens, its because the god is angry.
What right does he have to be mad at humans? Is there anyone who had even seen this existence named 'God'.
Daniel also wondered if the God doesn't like humans doing bad things then why does he let them do the deed, he is all knowing then why does he not kill them before the deed happens or change their mind.
He exhaled a long breath and quickly took some air in, his chest raised high. He got up and started to freshen up and get ready for the morning prayers.
Soon again a bell rang, the sign for the morning prayers. Daniel in his usual clothes, a simple grey pant and a white shirt with black school type shoes got up and went into the damp and cramped corridors which once seemed so big.
The morning prayers were held in the prayer room of the church. It was a big hall, at one end were big doors through which people came every morning, wooden lanes to sit upon were lined neatly. At the other end was a beautiful, big pedestal on which was a cross around which were flowers and candles neatly lined up.
The Sister's and the orphans started coming into the hall.
Daniel was just going into the doors mechanically as he heard a beautiful voice call his name from behind. He turned around and saw his childhood friend Elena coming over in a jog, as excited and sad as he was, for they were to move after this final day.
She was a fairly beautiful girl with medium height, a slim body, wavy golden locks which extended down to her knees and a round cute face, chubby fat on her cheeks and a slight cheekbone coming out, which now showed signs of being more definitive as she grew up.
Daniel lightened up as he saw them, since his childhood he loved being around Elena, she gave him a special feeling which he had never been able to identify.
"Let's go together." She said while showing off her big smile on her round cute face, her smile was enough to make any adolescent teenager blush with his ears turning red.
"But aren't we almost here?" Daniels furrowed his eyebrows as he pointed towards the church gates with confusion clearly visible on his face.
"Hmph…" Elena pouted and went straight into the hall leaving Daniel by himself.
He let out a chuckle and entered the hall as well, but he noticed that there were no people around him, there were always people who would come to the Church to the prayers everyday. He could only see his fellow orphans and no one else, he frowned but still continued to walk into the gates without much thought.
