"Carina!"
I heard a voice call my name and I couldn't help the smile that was forming on my face. I turned around to face the one that I cared for. The one that I loved.
"Lucas!" I yelled back, giggling like a love struck idiot. Well, that wasn't really wrong. I was a love struck idiot.
My best friend of 5 years came running up to me, lugging his backpack and his folders.
"Damn, these things are heavy. I better be buff by the end of the year." Lucas huffed and swung his head back, causing his hair to swish. It looked like an ad for shampoo. Well, it was only fair. His hair was smooth and thick, the kind of hair you would want to run your hands though.
Snap out of it.
I shook my head a little to bring myself back to the situation.
"Dude, you already are buff. I know you've been going to the gym. And have you seen your shirts? They used to hang off of your body, now they look like second skin." I told him.
He smirked and replied, "Paying a little attention, I see."
I could feel a faint blush form on my face, "I notice everything remember? Especially things that involve you, since you're my best friend."
"Ah yes, of course." He looked at me and smiled, "That's what I like about you."
I grinned at him, feeling light as he had just said that he liked me. Kind of.
We settled into a comfortable silence as we walked out one of the school gates and headed for his Jeep.
"Hey Lucas, wanna hang out with me tomorrow? The Mariachis will be there. You can bring your friends with you too, if you want." I asked, hoping that I'd get to spend more time with him.
He sighed and said, "Ah sorry, I'd love to go but I was able to land a date with Angela."
I banged myself against the car hood.
"Woah, are you ok?!" He asked/yelled, concerned.
"Yup," I groaned. "Yup, I'm fine."
That was going to leave a bruise for sure.
"But," I grimaced a little, "Back to the topic at hand, you didn't tell me that you were going on a date. And you didn't tell me it was with Angela Gomez." I clutched my torso, which received most of the impact, and started walking.
Bad idea.
I almost tripped at how painful it was, but Lucas literally dropped his school things and quickly steadied me. "Hey there, are you ok?" He asked.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm ok. Thank you."
I wasn't ok. My heart was beating a million times a second at how close he was to me. If I looked up, I could just kis—
Snap out of it.
I dismissed my feelings as fast as I could and instead turned around to look at his things. "Lucas! Your stuff!"
Lucas looked in the same direction as me and gave out a little laugh. "Yeah, that's my stuff."
He was looking at his bag and folders on the ground. But that wasn't the problem. The problem was that he was looking at his bags and folders while still holding me. And what made things worse was that he suddenly looked back and smiled the cat-like smile that I so loved.
My heart stopped for a couple of seconds. I shook my head a little and stepped out of Lucas's embrace. It was too intimate for me to handle.
"You shouldn't just drop your stuff like that." I walked towards his things and slowly started picking them up, making sure to check if anything bad had happened to them.
Lucas laughed, "I'd drop anything for you, Carina."
I blushed and turned my head so that he couldn't see my face. "Stop being corny and help me pick your things up." I told him.
"Yes, ma'am." He replied, then saluted me.
He moved to where I was, picking his things up as well. He was taking his time, and that gave me the luxury of staring.
I gazed at him lovingly. He really was perfect. A heart of gold and the face of an angel. What more could you ask for?
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
My mind suddenly came racing back to the present and processed the question being asked.
He noticed my staring.
Lucas looked at me through his long lashes. His brow was raised and his lips were parted.
My heart hurt. He was beautiful, and he was so far away. Because he would never look at me like that. He would never love me the way I loved him.
It hurt, but I smiled.
"Nothing."
