Rain pattered on the roof of the shack as its inhabitant slowly drew a dagger out of an ancient leather sheath. The figure, clothed in a dark robe black as tar, gripped the dagger point down mumbling incomprehensible words in a mindless chant. The knife's gleaming black blade glistened in the dim light provided by a single flickering candle as it plunged into the dry, earthy ground as if it were butter, opening a crack wide as the arm span of a grown man.
The dark figure carefully lifted a thick pouch the size of a man's head and released its dazzling contents into the depths of the Earth, thousands of glowing spheres moving in their own directions, each shimmering in certain colors, seeking the perfect companions in the war-ridden world to become capsules for unfathomable abilities.
"Choose your companions wisely, my brethren, and change the fate of this world destined for darkness." The figure rasped out in an ancient voice as the mysterious lights faded into the dark depths of the earth reaching out for their destined counterparts.
"May light be brought into this world." The ancient man whispered as his frail body dissipated, leaving a single blazing spherical ball of light, shining in not only one one, but all colors at the same time. This also entered the pit made by the man, in search of a new companion worthy of its power.
On a far continent lying on the other side of the planet, stood a seemingly ordinary abode, unsuspecting towards the fated changes coming its way.
~~~Present~~~
The warm sunlight filtered into the cramped basement room through the small corner window at the top of the cement wall. Miniature dew drops glistening on the healthy grass stems that peaked out below the window as a young creature stirred beneath the thin cotton sheets on the wrought iron frame as a bell tolled from far away.
'I couldn't quite rid myself of the intense dream I had last night. The dark rain and mysterious man seemed so tangible, as if I could reach out and grasp the blinding lights that flew out from the pouch. The last thing I could remember was seeing a flash of the miraculous light emitting from the cloaked figure's body, shocking me back to consciousness and leaving me unable to fall back back to sleep through most of the night until I succumbed to my exhaustion.'
"Rhi, Jase, get up here right this instant!" an impatient voice commanded as I was shaken from my thoughts, shattering my concentration as I pushed the dream to the back of my head.
"Coming madam", I called back as I jolted out of the bed preparing for the fateful day ahead. I bounded up the slick wooden steps rushing to reach the top, catching myself at the doorway right before I trampled over my sleepy twin brother, Jase.
"Hey Jase. Where's the madam?" I asked as I steadied him by grabbing his shoulders and dragged him towards the kitchen with me. Jase silently pointed to the study as he pulled me into the kitchen.
'Eat first.' Jase stated as he pointed to the bread on the counter-top.
"...", he stared silently with the identical pair of deep-blue eyes he knew that I couldn't resist, and before I knew it, the newly made morning bread was in my hands as I quickly began making breakfast for both of us.
'It's like a last meal' I thought as I cryptically stared at the fluffy bread in my hands.
Just at that moment, we heard the rattling of a carriage approaching the Residence as the madam walked into the kitchen and watched as I placed a sandwich in front of Jase and gazed at us with a peculiar expression.
"Let's go, its time." she said in a soft, almost regretful tone. After all, it was that day.
October 13th, our thirteenth birthday.
