Chapter 2 - Dreaming With Eyes Wide Open

When Su Li regained consciousness again, she felt dizzy momentarily as if she had gone through an arduous roller coaster ride. Trying not to regurgitate everything in her stomach she inspected her surroundings.

She was sitting in a wicker chair in an extravagant garden. The garden was washed aglow in the golden rays of the setting sun giving it a picturesque quality.

Not in the mood to appreciate the view, Su Li silently asked the system about her task and it obediently reported: [Host, this is a modern-day present world quite similar to your own world. You'll be passed on the relative information like the plot, your task and memories of the original soul. Please accept.]

Soon afterwards, Su Li had a feeling of a needle-like probe on her forehead for a second and consequently accepted everything that was sent her way. After sorting out all the information dump she had received, Su Li didn't know what expression to depict or what to even think about after learning the plot.

In her world, such cases were seldom seen. Moreover, her family had always kept her away from the harsh ugliness of the human society so she was somewhat astounded. The plot was almost three-quarters akin to all cliche novels in her world.

The female lead, Yu Yan was the illegitimate child of Yu Jian - head of one of the capital city's four most influential families. On the day of the Eldest Young Miss Yu's coming of age ceremony, the female lead was brought back into the Yu household by Yu Jian just mere hours before the banquet.

The Eldest Young Miss couldn't accept the fact that she had a paternal half-sibling who was infernally younger to her by three months.

She had lost her mother when she was around ten years old, therefore, she had always treated her father as her ultimate sky and earth. Now, just as she was on the cusp of entering society receiving such a huge blow from the only living blood relative she had, left quite a big scar on her psychologically.

Due to this, during the ceremony, she was absent-minded and passed it in a haze of betrayal, anger and sadness with nowhere to vent her feelings and no one to discuss her thoughts with. This, in turn, led most of the high society guests to have an impression that she was conceited and snobbish.

On the other hand, her father introduced his spurious offspring as the Second Young Miss of the Yu family. The female lead also charmed all the people present with her humble attitude hiding her poisonous thoughts deep in her heart.

Felling side-lined and dispensable in her own celebration, The Eldest Young Miss put all the blame on the head of this new younger sister who she felt was an interloper and had stolen her limelight. Her life started going downhill from that moment onwards without her notice but she was too absorbed in her own thoughts to take notice.

Since then her relationship with her father started deteriorating and was strained to the point that if one said West the other would surely go East. With the passage of time, her anger towards her father turned into apathy.

Between herself and Yu Yan it was as if she herself never put Yu Yan in her eyes, even though Yu Yan tried some under handed tricks to unseat her position. But to Yu Yan's chagrin, the people of high society were not greenhorns to all these petty schemes and could see through most of her thoughts.

A few years later just as the Eldest Young Miss was about to take her place in the Board of Directors in her family-owned company she met with a car accident leaving her in a comatose state.

Don't know if it could be considered a blessing or curse that even in that deplorable condition where the Eldest Young Miss couldn't do anything to express her thoughts, she still lived on for five miserable years.

In those five years, those white-eyed wolves came to stand at her bedside frequently telling her catatonic body all that they had done to her behind her back. She realised that her accident had been arranged by the illegitimate daughter so as to make way for her to take the rightful heiress position.

Three years into her catatonic state, taking advantage of the fact that she had been unresponsive to many treatments, the father-daughter duo pulled a fast one and named Yu Yan as the next successor of the company.

Yu Yan then went on to live a splendid and incredible life filled with everything one could ask for- riches, love, family and adulation of the masses.

Au contrarie, The Eldest Young Miss was tormented emotionally while lying on the hospital bed in her vegetative state which further turned her apathy towards her father into hate. She died with a vengeful heart not reconciled to her circumstances.

Taking in to account the overall plot Su Li sympathised with the legitimate daughter since she herself had spent the last few months of her life in the hospital as well.

Moreover, that pitiable girl just served as a foil to the so-called 'female lead'. Her task was to never let the female lead to gain a foothold in high society.

If it was the only that simple it would have been an effortless job for her since she had watched enough television dramas and read novels with the same premise before her death.

Nevertheless, how could her luck take a turn for the better when she had the devil's own luck as her company since childhood thought Su Li sarcastically.

The system told her there were two constraints on her during the task:

- She had to make sure of Yu Yan's physical well being throughout her natural life cycle.

- She had a non-compete pact between herself and Yu Jian

Corralling up to here Su Li could extrapolate her identity without any help or prompt from the system - the lamentable Eldest Young Miss Yu - Miss Yu Yue.

Sighing to herself, Su Li thought her first course of action should be to go through all the memories she had received of the original soul so that she could memorise all of Miss Yu Yue's quirks, tastes and habits. She closed her eyes and started going through all the memories while enjoying the gentle breeze in the garden.

After she came back to herself she realised that a significant amount of time had passed and it was nighttime. Realising that nobody had come to even call her, Su Li became cognizant of the fact that this was the main residence of the Yu family and the staff would obviously not disturb her until she asked or talked to them.

Having thought through things, Su Li went into her room to have a good night's sleep. After all, she could only start with her so-called 'task' if she was well rested.
